Shanksville, Pennsylvania

Monday, October 19, 2009

While we were in Gettysburg, we found out that it was just a short drive over to Shanksville, Pennsylvania where Flight 93 went down on 9-11. We made a decision to go visit the site and contribute to the funds towards the permanent memorial. It was a very sobering site but also one that made us all "fill with pride" over the heroic actions of the passengers that fateful day.

There are many granite memorials at the site - from hometowns of the passengers to the Patriot Riders. They will eventually either be place permanently in the memorial or will go into a museum.

People leave all kinds of treasures on the fence around the "makeshift" visitors center. Someday, the permanent memorial will be build and these items will go into a museum.

A man in Pennsylvania made these wooden angles for each passenger and flight crew on board of Flight 93 that day. One had sea shells around the base and the Park Ranger told that this young woman loved going to the ocean and when her family visits, they always bring sea shells when they visit the site.

The flag in the field represents the area where the plane actually went down. It is a private area for family members only and will never be open to the public.

Below is a link to the site which shows the plans for the permanent memorial.

Take care! Thanks for letting me share our journeys with you all.

Hugs, Sunny

Arriving in DC and Gettysburg

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Makes one wonder why they would need a mobile shredder in DC?
Too funny. We spotted this as we were making our way to Joshua's apartment. We did have quite the laugh about it.

Joshua & Rich at Gettysburg.

This photo was taken inside of the National Military Cemetery at Gettysburg. It was on the
grounds of this Cemetery that President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address.

Another photo of Joshua and Rich taken at Gettysburg.

This is the area called Devil's Den - rightfully named, I would say. There was a famous photo taken of a "fallen Confederate Soldier" on the rocks but many people believe the soldier was moved there and then the photo taken.

One of the home in Gettysburg which was typical of the homes built before the war. It is made from native stone found in the area.

Hope you enjoy the photos. I will post more tomorrow or later today of our trip to Shanksville, Pa where the Flight 93 went down on 9-11.

Hugs, Sunny

Sunny they have the mobile shredder trucks all over the city. Businesses have these special bins to put to be shredded docs in. Then on certain days the trucks come & empty the bins, kind of like garbage pick up...

Day two of our trip...Pennsylvania at her finest hour.

Saturday, October 17, 2009

A friend of mine said it looked as though God had his paintbrush out.

Take care and have a great day. We are headed down to Hannibal for the annual
Folk Art Festival. The weather man had predicted rain but the sun is shining and
we are ready to see the great art.

    HI Sunny,

I'm finally on my big computer again. I was just using my IPOD most of last week with the Fundraiser and recovering from it.

These pictures look great! I still haven't had a chance to download mine yet.

Wonderful to meet a spark friend offline. You both look so happy to finally meet in person. I actually met a fellow sparker at a group walk and barely knew her. Now I consider her a good friend but it is mostly on SP right now.
