The Whining Season has begun!!

Sunday, May 30, 2010

Ya know, last summer, running was fun because I was such a newbie. Although I didn't like the heat and humidity, I still got out there for every scheduled run. And I enjoyed it!

This summer, so far, running has become a chore!

This morning, I went for a 5 mile run. Got to 4.6 miles and called it. I was HOT! Seriously HOT!

HOT AND SWEATY AND PLAIN OLE MISERABLE!!

I just couldn't push it any further. The heat index was already 87 degrees and it was barely 10am when I finished.

By the time I got home, I melted into the couch, drained of any energy I had! (I can see a lot of couch time in my future for the summer!)

I have got to get my butt to bed earlier. I'm still not back into the pattern I was before we left for NY. It's been hard to get back into it. The last 2 weeks have been such a roller coaster ride. Mentally and physically!

But, ya know what?

Even though it's hot and I don't like it...I WILL CONTINUE TO DO IT!! I may whine about it but I will get it done!! I WILL!! I WILL!!

And ya know why?

Cause I can!!

Life IS Good!

You're an inspiration to me, even if I'm not ready to be running. Working my way up to it, but I too will be battling the heat and humidity off and on as I split my time between Florida and Pennsylvania for the summer. Keep it up, and keep inspiring the rest of us!!

Oh Suezette I thought of you this a.m. when I ran my 5 at 9:30 and it was about 86 and HUMID! I can't even imagine what you must go through! I can't run in the a.m. because of work..get up at 4:30 to go. So it is either the evening heat or the TM. I do the TM alot in the summer. In the air. Yeah, I am a wimp! You are so funny!

You will soon having a summer running schedule. I get up as early as 4:30 am (depends on the # of miles I need to run) to beat the heat.

Whine away... cause I plan on whining too. :)

You know that ol' saying, "those who whine together, run together" lol hmmm.... maybe we should both load "I will survive" onto our ipods and think of every one of our friends who are enduring the heat right along with us every time it plays!!

Here's to gettin ourselves in the groove of early morning runs AND kickin' the heat index's BUTT!!

You derserve a break girlfriend; been a lot goin' on. Take it then GET OUT THERE & RUN!!

It is hard to get back into the early morning thing. Last summer it was no problem to be out and running at 5 am....this spring I can barely get out the door by 6:30. I blame the rain. You could send us some sunshine and heat if you want....rain and 50s all week again.

Remember, you did SOMETHING! and that is so much better than nothing! And I think whining burns a few extra calories! emoticon

Suezette, YOU CAN DO IT! Running in the summer is pretty challenging, but leaving the house early is the key. It's much more pleasant to get out there by 6am or so. Just keep telling yourself that at night when you want to stay up a little later! :D

Would rather run in the snow than the heat. I whined on my after work run at 82 degrees. I am thinking it is time to give it up and run at 5:30 AM. I have to decide cool and alone or hot and running with a friend after work. I am happy I get to do my monday run this morning. Suzy

    Hi Suezette

Well we do live in Florida, so I know how you must feel when it is so hot. I don't run so when I walk in the day, it's not to bad if there is wind. That is why I do some walking in the evening, when the sun is going down.

I do think it is a little humorous about your whining, You know you have a fantastic attitude and Like you said Whine and Run, Whine and Run. You WILL DO IT.

I hear you Suzette. One of the disadvantages of those of us that live in Florida is the heat and humidity. After yesterdays 5.25 mile run, mowing the backyard, and getting the motorcycle loaded and up to the shop for repair I was so drained from the heat and humidity. It finally all caught up with me today and all I could do was rest and sleep.

ACTIVE_AT_60 5/30/2010 9:40PM

Suezette. Well written blog about a very common issue. Trust me - I have been here too. Having a regular sleep pattern certainly help. When I started to train for my half ironman distance, my body dictated when it was bed time. Unfortunately it also dictated that it did not want to get up in the morning, and what made matters worse ... hockey season. LOL. I am now getting into a better balance.

What I would suggest. Look at some opportunities for cross training in this heat and humidity if you can. i.e. if you have a bike - ride your bike - get on an indoor elliptical trainer or treadmonster if you can. Another option is swimming.

I am sure if you put a little thought into it you can find a way to combine days of running and cross training.

You know, I'm not a fan of hot runs, either. Yesterday morning at 8:00 I went for what was supposed to be a 12 mile run. It was hot and miserable already, and I went 2.62 miles and called it quits. Determined not to let it get me down, I got up and out the door by 6:30 this morning. I watched the sun rise through the fog, and I was home by 8:40. It was hot, but it didn't seem unbearable, mostly because I knew I could get it done regardless of the temps. It turned into an absolutely beautiful run, and I enjoyed it!

You will enjoy it again, too. Just keep doing it, and the joy will come back.

I read a blog the other day that said you need about 10 hours (total) time to get acclimated to a rise in weather temperature, so you may (eventually) get used to it later in the week! Before then, or even during, I agree: Stop when you feel you can't do any more, and go home. You've done well so far, and I'm certain you'll continue going places!

Run for the Gecko 5k -- 1 year later!

Saturday, May 08, 2010

This was the run that began my racing career 1 year ago! The first race I ever ran just 2.5 months from the day I started with that 30 second run.

On that day, I ran the 5k in 35:43.

I woke up a bit late this morning. That was because I didn't go to bed till late last night. DH and I just changed phone plans and I got a Droid! (It's equivalent to the iPhone but by Verizon). Well, this is just such a cool phone but it has a learning curve. I was learning so much (and having fun I might add) that I lost track of time. Hence, went to bed late!

So anyway....

DH wakes me up 20 minutes later. Not a problem though as I had everything ready the night before (before I started playing with the phone that is...LOL).

BUT, I forgot to change the setting on the coffee timer so there was no coffee waiting for me when I got up.

Now that was more annoying then waking up late. I NEED my coffee!

I got on the road on time and drove the 40 minutes to the race site.

Picked up my race packet, went back to the car, pinned on number, etc.

Then went for a little warm up jog.

IT WAS ALREADY HOT!

I then head for my pacing group, and at this point I realize that I'm not even nervous. I use to get nervous over races. Not anymore. Can't remember the last race I was nervous about.

(OK, maybe I can...NOLA...but that's a different blog...LOL)

I've realized that I'm not running for anyone but myself. I only race against myself.

So, why be nervous?

The race starts and off I go.

Lots of kids in this race so I was doing a lot of dodging back and forth, weaving in and out, and basically just trying to get ahead of the pack.

By the half mile mark, I was drenched in sweat!! HOLY CRAP! It was so HOT! And HUMID! The sweat was just pouring down my forehead and into my eyes.

And of course, wouldn't ya know it? I left my sweat rag, the one I ALWAYS carry with me on runs, in the car!!

By the 1.75 mile mark I had to walk a bit and dig my shirt out of my belt so I could wipe my face...cost me some time.

And I had to do it again around the 2.5 mile mark and it cost me a bit of more time.

But I really couldn't help it, my eyes were burning! (If you've ever gotten sweat in your eyes then you know EXACTLY what I mean!)

Anyway, I finally crossed the finish line.

Garmin time was 30:40 for 3.16 miles.

I went and checked the official race time.

30:34

All I could think of was "I would have ran a sub-30 had I remembered my sweat rag!!"

But you know what?

It's all good!

I knocked off 5:09 minutes from my first race 1 year ago!!

That made me happy! VERY, VERY HAPPY!!

Life IS Good!!

May Goals

Monday, May 03, 2010

I'm so happy that April is finally over. It was a hectic month. VERY busy. Family visits. Doctor visits, medical tests, and medical procedures.

Not to mention it was also my birthday month and I made some excuses to eat lots of rich foods.

And it showed up in a 2 pound weight gain.

Good news is, I already lost a pound!! Whew! (Note to self: must change weight tracker show that loss!!)

I've also noticed that I really haven't been keeping up with my goals. I haven't posted any new ones in months.

So, here's to May and a Fresh start!!

May Goals:
1. Run 75 miles.
2. Run 4 days a week. (I've been doing this for 3 weeks now and it's working good.)
3. Run the *hill* at least 2-3 more times this month. (I already ran it once...today! Woo Hoo!)
4. Run for the Gecko 5k Saturday May 8th -- This is the first race I ever did last year. I can't wait to see how much I've improved on this course.
5. Gym 3 days a week for spinning and yoga.
6. Continue the Strength training but make up a DAILY/WEEKLY plan with specific exercises that I will do each day. (EX. yesterday I did Biceps Curls and Triceps Dips. This is working well for me this way and at least I'm getting it done!)
7. Lose 3 to 4 pounds. I'd like to drop the 3 pounds and get back to 124. Dropping 4 pounds would be great so I get a jump on next month. But realistically, I'll be extremely happy dropping the 3 pounds!!

So, there they are in black and white for me to print and put on my frig.

Here's to a GREAT May!!

Life IS Good!

I am sensing a push from the universe here.....yours is the third or fourth blog I have recently read that involves setting monthly goals. Hmmmm, maybe I should look into it...........

I want to run 75+ miles in a month, too! I wonder if that's on my schedule for the month?

Great goals! When I first started working out with weights, I had two motivators: 1) a 73 year old woman who looked better than I did in a bikini (and I was 23 and in decent shape!), and 2) you burn more calories at a resting rate when you have more muscle (ie, I like beer).

Great job!!!
