Going up a hill today with Mr.wheelchair himself.We "walked in silence"for a while and he needed to rest his arms in the shade of a maple tree.Sue?he asked what motivates you?Well,my kids,my husband,my friends,my dog,my home,walking with you!He grinned and joked about he knew it was his legs that excited me!Motioning to his missing legs.I turned his chair to me,sat on a bench and said Bryan,what's eating at ya?Oh he said i'm sad today because its my moms birthday and she's passed away.I know how you feel my mom is gone too.She is?He looked puzzled.You said you do this to honor your mom.I do because she never had the chance to finish her quest to be healthy before she passed.Bryan,your legs are not who you are!You said your little girl is 6 months old?Yeah he beamed My heart!She will never know you with the your legs and thats just awful but,she'll know you as the daddy that loves her.The daddy that survived Iraq!!He looked at me with tears glistening in his beautiful green eyes.Bryan,it's better to have her dad than a tombstone to visit...He let the tears flow and I took his hand and said now stop your blubbering and lets get you going so you can get your strength back and get some new legs to walk with me!!He laughed and said Sue,thanks!You've done more for me than any therapist could...Its alright my dear I smiled and almost cried myself.There are hills in life,hard going up but better going over and down..lots of hills to come. We all do what comes natural in life.We laugh,cry,complain,vent,and just act silly.There are a rare few that think of others and dont complain.My point is that yesterday as i was taking my walk,a wheelchair bound veteran came flying past me,no legs but a charming personality...you can do it he yelled giving me thumbs up!!To be honest,I was feeling like throwing in the towel when my back started hurting but,his constant cheering for me had me determined!!Just as I was headed up a hill,huffing and out of breath,here comes mr.wheelchair!Are you thinking of stopping?he asked,No,i grumbled why?Because,he answered you have your legs and you are awesome!!Laughing,I said Why are you here? to frustrate me or cheer me on?Both he yelled over his shoulder and sped off and i went home.I returned today and mr.wheelchair was nowhere in sight.I warmed up and took off with a good stride.Out of the corner of my eye I spotted the little bugger coming straight for me...holding out his hand he said hello,im Bryan..I took his hand and said im Susan!We traveled quietly for a few minutes when his flood gates opened and he told me about his life.I felt good to concentrate my thoughts on a friends problems and not think of my pain.We are "walking" together as a comeback team as he has alot of pain too.Funny how life comes around!His coach hangs around the trail keeping his eye on Bryan.He said That Bryan's attitude has changed and im glad... I was at my wits end with our old car!It left my DH stranded at work,we picked him up and had the car towed to a Dodge dealer at home.Of course he is gone before 4 each morning and im here to deal with the car.It's the fuel pump and its going to cost more than we thought.I was staring wide eyed and open mouthed at the man before me!895*^%$#@ dollars to repair it and the car wont get us but $300 at the junk yard???The smirk and smug look that man gave me made me want to become ninja and slap him bald headed!I called my DD,she has a boyfriend that worked with a 20 year veteran mechanic.He called me and said they would repair the car for $100 plus cost of the part at Auto Zone($192.43 with tax)So,my future son in law drives a tow truck and i arranged for him to pick up my car....Oh mam says the smug serviceman,I dont suggest you have a shadetree mechanic do the job...we have trained mechanics and I worry for your safety...now,he worries about me after I almost had a heart attack..I walked right past him,paid for the diagnostics and left!!One day later,$292.43 bill and im driving my car!!!!Just because we are women,dont mean we are stupid.I was almost taken advantage of and after I called around learned that the most it costed for a replaced fuel pump repair was $632...What do ya'll think? Im a wife,mom,grammy,sister,aunt,niece,cousin and FRIEND!I have many roles that i love and am very proud of each one.I looked at my extra weight and did not cringe.I just vowed to get myself back to where I was before and am doing great!I LOVE myself first that way I can love everyone else.Im only losing like 2 pounds per week but,it adds up!you all take care and remember LOVE YOURSELF FIRST!! I have been a volunteer at numerous places,none as rewarding as feeding the poor or the nursing home.My oldies are so grateful but,I feel great love from them.Watching them grow older and pass away after years of knowing them kills me!Octavia,a beautiful black lady would follow me around telling me about her life.Ronald,a 98 year old always had a sweet attitude.Genie 85,was so lovely!She had 17 kids,47 grands,and 108 great grands!!We had a coming home to Jesus party for them today.What a great time for memories.I sat polishing Ruby's toenails.She looked at me thoughtfully and smiled.Ya know honey she said patting my hand,you make life grand!!With tears I hugged her and said I have enjoyed all of you folks!I want to make thier lives more happy if i can,and im not the only one!Anyone out there that wants to make a nursing home residents day,Give it a try,it will enrich your life!! SUSAN
