Its not always easy being a volunteer

Thursday, June 07, 2012

I have been a volunteer at numerous places, none as rewarding as feeding the poor or the nursing home.My oldies are so grateful but,I feel great love from them.Watching them grow older and pass away after years of knowing them kills me!Octavia,a beautiful black lady would follow me around telling me about her life.Ronald,a 98 year old always had a sweet attitude.Genie 85,was so lovely! She had 17 kids,47 grands, and 108 great grands!!We had a coming home to Jesus party for them today. What a great time for memories.I sat polishing Ruby's toenails. She looked at me thoughtfully and smiled.Ya know honey she said patting my hand, you make life grand!!With tears I hugged her and said I have enjoyed all of you folks!I want to make thier lives more happy if i can,and im not the only one!Anyone out there that wants to make a nursing home residents day,Give it a try,it will enrich your life!! emoticonSUSAN

graduation update

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

Kayla stood there before me about to graduate high school.I hugged her and went to turn away.Mom!wait!! she yelled over hundreds of voices. She came over, took my hands, looked me in the eyes and said, you are the reason im standing here today..MOM,I love you,Thanks so much for all the big things and little things you have done to get me here!I tried to pull away and she said no mom are my angel!!I was swallowing back tears,my eyes were red and I looked like Rudolph(red nose)She wrapped her arms around me and held me tight and ran off into the crowds...All i could say was WOW!!!
We screamed, yelled, laughed, hugged and applauded loudly as she walked up and accepted her diploma...hundreds of pics later we went and had dh's birthday dinner and graduation celebration! She said she'd rather hang out with us since her parents got her busy and she got her diploma! It was a great day and im sitting here with tears threatening to spill over just remembering it...... emoticonYa'll be sweet!!SUSAN

My dd is graduating 2 June!

Friday, June 01, 2012

I am overwhelmed with emotions.Going back in my memories my baby girl saying mama,I cant go to school you'll be lonely and watching her board that big yellow monster. It seemed to swallow her as she waved goodbye.I was also thrilled to have a few hours to get something done(she was my shadow)We read books, went to storytime, played in the park, shopped, painted, folded laundry, baked cookies and watched videos together. We were never idle. The years flew by and shes about to graduate on her dad's birthday! It's a gift for him.I have a photo of him on the beach holding his two little girls hands, wading in the surf.It seems like a lifetime ago.I often catch him with a look of awe on his face thumbing through photo albums..smiling,laughing and remembering them growing up.This time will be good for he and I to have more time together.I will miss Kayla dearly but,its time for our baby bird to fly..... emoticon emoticonSUSAN

Im a country girl!

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Growing up I was a total tomboy. My big(and only) brother Edward knew it and dragged me into all sorts of adventures.Sometimes ending up in serious trouble plus a butt whoopin.I climbed up trees, waded creeks for frogs, baited my own hook when fishing and took off my fish.I braved holding snakes to make Ed proud but cringed inside.Investigated an old pond only to end up severing my toe on a coke bottle and being carried on my brothers back.My brother the KING dropped buckets of rocks on my head for laughs and caused a seven inch laceration on my scalp! One month later while climbing a tree the limb broke and I slid down cutting me from my breastbone to my pubic bone.I was attacked by hundreds of red wasps, swelling my whole face up and I couldnt see for a week.I swung like Tarzan from grapevines and swam the rivers and lakes.Went hunting with Ed and gutted the rabbits, squirrel and deer like a champ.Helped to pick tree fruit, baled hay, picked wild berries, mowed grass, chopped wood, cut down trees, canned with Gramms and was expected to wear a dress to church and choir practice while my smart aleck brother made fun of me.We would wrestle to the ground and end up with bruises and a torn dress.Much to my dismay Mama would just spank me and sew me another frilly dress.I had hair down to the bends of my legs,it was kept in a braid and I hacked some of it off only to get another spanking. My cousins had short hair! Gramms had the same long hair and convinced me I was just like her!Church was torture and Gramps was the pastor.Keeping a strict eye on me cause I was a bit of a challenge.I was bored easily and often snuck to get refreshments before break time.Gramps would put me up on stage to watch me and I'd fall asleep and start snoring loudly which made the other kids laugh.I have friends now that are astounded that I mow grass, weed eat, wash cars, change tires, clean the garage, wash the dog, garden, grill food,do plumbing, repair vacuums! They claim its mens work emoticonI dont waste time on manicures because I've ruined my share of nails,my well meaning DD's have made me get.I do dress nicely, put on sandals, paint my nails and toes, put on jewelry, curl my hair, put on makeup, perfume but even with all of that...Im still a Country Girl at heart.... emoticonSUSAN

You had a very interesting and active life growing up along with some serious accidents( plus the whoppings). Your mom decided a frilly dress was what was needed for church---thank goodness these days we can go more casual to church(although some people just can't seem to dress appropriate for church). Your blog was an interesting read, keep writing fasinating blogd.

Hey, this is the 21st century and you can be girly when you want and tomboy when you want. Men's work is women's work is anyone's work! The key is to just BE and be just YOU! As for having a pastor in the family it made for a GREAT story!! Thanks for blogging about this! Delightful!

What a fun blog! It sounds like you had a terrific childhood. What cherished memories. I laughed at the pastor part. My father was a minister and, me being me, I ended up on the front row often so he could keep his eye on me. Falling asleep, much less snoring, would have been mortifying not to mention I'd not have been able to sit down for a week.

Love your blog! When I was little my Mom tried to dress me up in frilly, lacy dresses, hats, patent leather shoes & white gloves, but it didn't take. I am a country girl at heart! Moved out of the city first chance I got and built our home in the forest. I can also mow grass, weed eat, wash trucks, change tires, wash & groom the dog & garden.
I'm a better shot than my hubby and also enjoy shopping for nice clothes, and long bubble baths with candles burning. it's nice to hear somebody else is like me! Pat emoticon

Letting the small things make me happy!

Monday, May 21, 2012

Some people might find me an odd sorta bird but,I enjoy things others may not even give a thought to.A spider scares me something awful but,They can be beautifullly colored and artistic.A lady bug with its spotted body eating aphids,a bluejay collecting grass and twine for a nest,a wildflower nestled among thistle.A fresh new rainbow after a rain,a bath filled with birds splashing away and my dog rolling on the ground in glorious abandon. It relaxes me to enjoy lifes little things especially when it can be so hectic. My friend Andy made us some fresh peach tea and we sat on her patio and laughed at her vacation photos as her little grandson pretended to be an avenger on her lawn.We all have things to turn to for relaxation what are yours? emoticonSUSAN

I personally love bugs and birds - watched a nest of teeny weeny spiders creep up webs to spin their own and float away on the breeze. The local baltimore orioles are very competetive over the grape jelly I put out for them. I love the little muskrats who live in the marsh across the street from my house and am always so happy when I glimpse one swimming around the cattails! And when the sandhill cranes come buggling over in the fall and spring I am just delighted! Yeah, people think I am a bit nuts. Most folks don't even notice! But the little things I notice keep me happy!
