All too much going on Sue, slow down, pamper yourself, be still for a little while. You are precious and deserve to be treated like a delicate flower.

Remembering Christmas past

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

When we were kids we were really poor.Just getting clothes from the church box was enough but,if we got an orange, apple, peppermint stick and chocolate we were the most greatful! It didnt have to be about gifts to make us kids happy. We knew we were'nt getting anything so we made each other things. My oldest sister made me a quilt for the bed my dad hauled out of the town dump for just me.Gramms made me a cotton ticking mattress for it and I felt like a queen!Mom was the coolest...she made me my own pillow with my name on it.Family and friends dropped off fruitcake(ew) and peanut brittle. My aunts sewed alot so I would get pj's and gowns, popcorn balls and homemade caramels. We would cut down a cedar tree and decorate it with tin foil stars and paper chains.Glow in the dark ornaments and strings of popcorn. It was fun to sit by the fire and hear stories of mom and dads childhood Christmas pasts.Gramms would have us kids all crammed into the loft of the farmhouse eating caramel apples and telling us the most important thing about the Season...LOVE!I appreciate all I have now but,The way we lived back then I wouldnt change a thing...well maybe a bit more groceries...LOL...We had fun, love and didnt expect anything so,if we did get an unexpected gift...WOOHOO!I kept memories in my heart that have made me far richer than material things ever could.... emoticonSUSAN

I'm from those old days when average people didn't have much and had to make do. In many ways, we were lucky to have a privileged upbringing, with no shortage of material things and wonderful gifts. Sometimes, though, I wonder if you didn't get the best gift of all. You got the gift of appreciation, and it shows in how giving you are. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

The old folks are sad!

Monday, December 12, 2011

I walked into the center.Met by the Hum Drums and Ho Hums was unusual for this rowdy crew.Someone always had a joke or a smart aleck comment.Rachael a fellow volunteer said they are'nt very happy today!Bernie passed away on Friday!A sick feeling always hits me in the gut when death pays a visit while I was gone.I asked her had they had the memory talk. No,she answered they are just too sad.I walked to the center of the circular area and said..I thought Bernies jokes were my favorite thing beside his big heart! They turned and ears perked said...He was my best friend...he was a great artist..we watched Harrys Law together...he always gave his friends a hug...he shared his goodie box...he loved decorating for Christmas.I laughed.. Bernie would be the first to say pick your chin up and smile kid!He left the center his life savings $832.69 would go to the shelter to feed the homeless Christmas dinner.Sometimes it hurts to remember but it feels great to talk and laugh and cry about someone we have lost. After all they were a big part of our lives emoticonSUSAN

How Sweet! So good of you to start the rememberence. Everyone should be remembered for all the good they've done. I'm sure that talking about all the fun things we know about a person who has left us, is good therapy for everyone. emoticon

I am just catching up on your Blogs. I was gone for a few days, and it is amazing how much you fall behind!! I am sorry to hear that one of your sweet little old people passed away....But, I know how blessed he was having you in his twilight years...
Your Grandbaby sounds adorable, but isn't amazing at how at such an early age, the kids of that generation already want things that we did get until we were in our 30's and 40's....
I know you will be wonderful in the "class" the kids and Moms will love you!!! Have a wonderful time!! HUGS!! Shannon

my granddaughter Aaliyah

Sunday, December 11, 2011

She's 5 years old and a windup toy.The Energizer bunny has to keep up with her!She goes all day and when she falls asleep an army cannot wake her.She is completely mesmerized by all the shiny, glittery, tinsel, balls, light displays.Grammy she announces..Im going to buy you a cookbook for a Christmas gift and give you a million dollars when I grow up!Then, you can buy anything you want! So,she asks what are you giving me?Oh,just a big hug and kiss like this I scooped her up and handed her a fresh cookie. No she laughed arent you getting me a cell phone?...SAY WHAT?We all laughed but,she was darned serious!!Pouting she folded her arms, poked out her mouth and said I never get to call anyone...Oh brother!Any paper and pencil are fair game for her and she will draw for hours on end.I have a basket for old cell phones and handed her one.HUH?she looked puzzled youre giving me a Flintstone phone?wheres the touch screen??Wheres the games? After a good laugh and some old home videos we said goodnight and Aaliyah hugged me tight and said Grammy I Love You...trust me those little arms are not far from my thoughts and she is a handfull but,i wouldnt trade her.She gets out of school for Christmas break on Friday and I'll be helping the moms with a party...wish me sanity..will ya? emoticonSUSAN

5 was a fun age for both my grandbabies....and the sophistication of the humor grows with them, so keep those laughs and giggles flowing. It won't be long before you're both giggling over these memories themselves.

Blessings!
