Can no longer afford to get sloppy with food and sleep on the weekends. Weak. Slow. Clear cause/effect. NOT. havin. it.
After crappy performance on 7am WOD (see previous status), went for 2nd attempt at 5pm. Awwwww yeah, THAT'S how we DO it! 45lb heavier and FOUR MINUTES FASTER, baby!!! Suckit, WOD! Roarrrrr!

For time: thirty 25# dumbbell presses, 300ft. farmer's carry w 50# load, 75 squats w 50# load. 11:47. Satisfactory.

During short 400m warm-up run this morning, pants and undies would. not. stay. up. Lol, guess it's time to go shoppin'...
"Medium?" ~department store sales woman, eyeballing me and guessing my size. Not XL, not even L... she said Medium!!!!! (and... it fit!) Roarrrrrrrrr....

Just saw friend-of-friend's FB post: "40 lbs lost in less than 6 weeks." :-o Doesn't say how, but I'm having to remind myself that it in NO WAY diminishes my own slow, hard-won success. Press on!

Finally stepped on scale after about 3 weeks of reckless misbehavior. Damage? Only 2lb. Pretty lenient sentence considering... Now, time to forget it and press on...

Today's nutrition stats: 1500cal, 18.8%prot, 21.1%fat, 60.1%carb. Not the *best* quality today (eatin' on the run...), and a little carb heavy... I give myself a C.

Relief to wake up actually hungry for breakfast again after all the holiday excess.
Heading out for the last WOD of 2011.
For time: 100 double-unders, 75 (14#) wallballs, 50 pullups, 25 (65#) thrusters. 26:34. Bit slow. I blame it on Christmas.
Back squats to 5-rep max. Was up to 5 at 145# when time ran out. Not a true max, but super happy with that.
For time: 150 20" box jumps, 150 36# kettlebell swings, 150 situps. 46:08. I'm a slow box jumper (I step down instead of jumping down, to protect my ankles)......
5K from home to gym: ~33mins. Then, for time: 500m row, 10 rounds of 15 double-unders & 7 burpees, 1 mile run. 34:52. Roar.

I also had a question, from time to time you post up some status for workouts that you do and I've seen your reference them as WOD... what is that? Is it workout of the day? Is that a site? something you make up? Just curious... I'm always looking for new workouts lol

Monday this week (January 9, 2012) marked the one-year anniversary of the day I started my Spark journey in earnest. I'm delighted to report that I'm halfway to my weight-loss goal (I refuse to be disappointed with not being farther along). But what's really remarkable is how much I am changing in other, non-physical, ways.

I am acutely aware of being in the middle of an inside-out transformation that I only dimly understand at this point. It's not reflected in my weight chart or nutrition tracker but it's happening. I feel it, and I can see a reflection of it in the 360-or-so verbal snapshots I posted this year in my Feed. There's something of a growing confidence and momentum in their tone as the year goes on. A gradually shifting energy and change in focus from thinking and feeling toward BEING and DOING. This year I even changed my name...

Day 4 on the wagon, and I am 1% of the way toward goal.
HILARYMD restarted P90X today. X for X-treme! I'm being patient with myself.

A huge breakthrough: I'm right back on program today after a too-big dinner out with family last night. There was a recent time when it could have taken me days (or weeks!) to reset.
Non-scale victory: Arrived 40 mins early for a class, so used the time to get a little cardio. Just ran up and down the stairwell 10 times. Beet red and legs of rubber, but proud of myself!
Do emoticons work in a status update? emoticon ...hmm, guess not.
HILARYMD is hungrier than usual today, but still stayed within calories...
WI day is Monday. Fearing Superbowl fallout, I put it off till today (but did NOT lowball my calories yesterday). Drumroll please.... I'm down 3lbs, Superbowl be damned! Woohoo!
HILARYMD is watching Biggest Loser.
I'm ready for my goal weight now. Please deliver it to me at my home address immediately. Thank you.
What beverages do you count in your water tracker? Only plain water? Coffee/tea too? Diet soda? Juices? Regular soda? Just wondering what folks do...
Tonight in acting class our teacher lined us up in order by bodyweight. I was third heaviest, standing between two men almost a foot taller than me. Mortifying. This is the last straw. Done being fat!

HILARYMD broke a new decade this morning! It's not my WI day but I had a feeling, so I checked. (I won't log it until WI on Monday.) ROAR!!!!
NSV: Got off metro a stop early, added 1.5 mi walk to my day. FML: my panties kept falling down (I mean completely off my tush) inside my pants. Either the elastic is shot or they're too big now...
I used to hate walking but now, surprisingly... I kind of love it. 5.6 miles today. RRRRRROAR!!
HILARYMD is done with calories for the day, but still a bit hungry. Guess I'll have a big glass of water, go to bed, and dream about breakfast...
TGFS - Thank God for SPARKPEOPLE! I'm down another 2.2 this week! When I think of all the money I spent on Weight Watchers.... well. I just *won't* think about it.
NSV! Two things that did NOT derail me this week: baking a batch of amazing cupcakes, a birthday party with lots of delicious pizza. Roar!
By Friday, March 4, I WILL be under 200lbs.
Stupid weekends... gotta get a handle on 'em. Back in the saddle now, but don't like this tendency to kick off the week in need of damage control.
Help! What's your strategy for weekends when the usual routine is interrupted and hard-to-track eating opportunities are abundant? Huge stumbling block. Suggestions desperately needed!

For support in being more active, hang out with active people. Problem is... I honestly don't know any. All my friends are suburban, restaurant-going, theatre-loving sitters like me.
Yesterday I was off-center and in danger of sliding into the abyss. Clung to my food and fitness trackers for dear life. Today, equilibrium seems to have returned.
HILARYMD made a veggie pizza from scratch for 334 cals per huge, loaded slice. I feel totally indulged and still have 176 calories left in my budget for the day... THIS I can sustain.
To do: 5 miles - CHECK! (And a gorgeous sunny day for it here, too!)

Just curious... what is your SP recommended calorie range? Mine is 1200-1550.
Yeah, planning the week ahead is the way to go. Soooo much easier just to check off boxes than sit down and log recipes and meals from scratch three times a day. I get a big "Duh!" for this one!

Think I strained achilles tendon. Pain flexing, pointing foot, as when descending stairs, but oddly none when walking. Minor swelling toward medial side of tendon. Rest, ice, Naproxen. Other advice?

Intensity a bad thing?! Passion, zeal, fire, spirit, vigor, commitment at least are NOT BLAND. I crave intense experiences. Maybe that means I am intense. So be it. No apology. Dispassion is not me.
Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general.

Hi Hilary,

I have to tell you that I'm so so so impressed by you, not just by your weight loss and by all of the discipline that it took to get there, but also by all of the joy and pride that come through in your posts. I absolutely love it. It seems like you love yourself, and wow - what an accomplishment that is in and of itself.

Every time I read one of your posts, I am joyful and proud of you, and I just love you so much! You are contagious and inspiring. Thank you for that.

I have lost some weight recently myself (and am still in the process) and you definitely deserve some of the credit for my weight loss! My scale, mirror, and clothes thank you!!!

Congratulations on all that you're accomplishing. Don't underestimate the ripple effects!!!

    What a beautiful pashmina gift selected by Nancy (I’m currently on holiday in her great state . . . although I was wondering if she lived near “Packer” country with the beautiful green and gold). Hi Paula,

Sorry for the delay responding to your question. I love crossfit! It's NOT just a men's thing. And I would be surprised if you didn't find lots of women going to the crossfit gym near you as well, if you started going and got to know the people there.
I understand being nervous about going into a gym where there aren't many other women, but I would encourage you to go for it anyway. My very first crossfit workout, I was the only woman (just by happenstance that day), and it made me nervous at first. But I just jumped in, and now realize that no one else was even thinking about gender. Everybody was just there to get (and help each other get) mind-blowingly fit. In my experience, people who go to crossfit gyms are serious about fitness, and that alone is what they are there for. Sometimes they are athletes in some other sport as well, and use crossfit for general training. So, you are not likely to find men on the prowl or any of the other off-putting gender dynamics that you can sometimes find in other co-ed gyms.

Why I like crossfit:
1. The workouts are tough. I know I am not wasting my time.

2. The workouts are "scalable," i.e. adjustable to whatever your present abilities can manage. Everyone does the same workout, but each at his or her own level. Sometimes that means substituting an easier similar exercise, sometimes that means using a lighter weight, sometimes that means doing fewer repetitions. Depends on your needs. But this adjustable design means that truly, literally anyone can do crossfit. There is a way to scale the workout for any fitness level or physical limitation.

3. Structure. The WOD - workout of the day - all planned out for you. Just show up and leave everything you've got in the gym.

4. Community - people with similar goals helping and encouraging each other. The owner of my crossfit gym actually e-mailed me when I didn't show up for a week (holiday travels) to make sure I wasn't giving up. And I'm on an unlimited membership, so they make their money whether I show up and use the membership or not. No other gym I've ever belonged to cared or even noticed whether I ever showed up or not. Also, as I am still a beginner and still a good 40lbs overweight... I am often one of the last finishers in the class. Very often this means one or two of the more advanced members will come over after they've finished the WOD and coach and encourage me as I push through to the end, which is often the hardest part -- finishing, when you're tired and getting close to the end. And then, once I crank out my last rep... they cheer and there are high-5's all around. To me, that's so much better than a solitary run. I LOVE the personal connection/community aspect of crossfit.

5. The workouts are... um... fun? OK they can be hellaciously difficult. But they're all achievement oriented, so it becomes a bit like a game. Seeing whether you can beat your last time, or weight (or both)... There is a goal within each workout, which encourages you to put a higher level of effort and intensity into your workout, and makes it ... yeah, fun! Each workout is a race or a competition of some kind, against your own personal best. Never just a long boring slog through a workout. If you're watching the clock, it's because you want to try and BEAT it... fit in one more set, or one more lap, or one more REP... before time runs out. Not because you're counting the minutes till you can stop.

6. I am getting "hotter" by the day. Seriously, I have been seeing changes so rapidly in my appearance and in my fitness and strength, etc... that it has become easy (!) to stay motivated (never thought I'd say that about exercise) and keep showing up and working hard. Of course consistency is the key, so having such a clear connection between what I'm seeing in the mirror, how I'm feeling, and my hard work has been a big factor in my ability to sustain crossfit as my fitness habit.

7. It's great mental training. Pushing yourself past your personal best on a regular basis takes a kind of mental toughness, both in terms of tolerating physical discomfort (nope, running with a 25lb sandbag doesn't get any more fun the more you do it; but you get less sensitive to the discomfort and more able to push yourself through it)... and also in terms of overcoming sabotaging thoughts and feelings like doubt, fear, pre-conceived ideas about what you can and cannot do... Crossfit requires you to learn how to control and push through any mental blocks that may hold you back. That's a valuable skill across all areas of life.

Things I'd caution anyone about re crossfit:

Don't be in a hurry to progress. Learn to work with good form before you increase loads, durations, or intensities. If there are moves you just should not do for any reason (injuries, etc)... *you* have to be the one who knows it and adapts the workout to your needs.

Every crossfitter has to balance the task of challenging him/herself in each workout (which is important -- you can't expect much of a result if you aren't giving your all in each workout), with the responsibility to his/her own wellbeing. Those who rush, want to be a hero, try to do more than their bodies are truly ready for, or who sacrifice good form for faster speed or heavier weight... GET HURT, and can get hurt badly. This IS considered an extreme fitness activity. You have to become the expert on your own body, its needs, its capabilities... and know for yourself the difference between giving yourself a good challenge and being foolish. You are your own advocate. The trainers will coach you on form, and help you choose appropriate scales as needed, but YOU are the one who has to set the limits. Nobody else knows your body well enough.

And then... go do the rookie's or beginner's program at your local gym. Usually a 6-workout series... depending on the way they structure it at your gym. You can always stop if it's not your cup of tea. But that's the best way to find out.

I think this is a great representation of Crossfit for anyone interested in trying it out. I agree with it all!
I myself have been Crossfitting for about 8 months therefore i can completely relate to everything you said. The results i have gotten have been unreal! I am so happy i have found this wonderful place and community of people. The people i CF with have become like a second family to me. Love it!

    You hit it spot on! It's exactly how it is for me. I especially love the community. I'm oftentimes the last one done and there is no shame - just fellow CFers urging and cheering me on.
