Need for snacks

Saturday, May 25, 2013

I think this expereince can help others.
The year I turned 40 I gained a lot of weight while still running 5-60km per week and I had not changed my eating habits. My blood pressure also went up and for the first time in my life (my blood pressure has always been on the lower side) I had several readings above 140/80mmHg. I think it was changing hormone levels, which made my body need less food.
I reduced my food to 1600kcal per day but still on 3 meals a day and increased my exercise (mainly running). but for several months I did not loose any weight, i did however maintain and my blood pressure got back into the normal range.
Then I started reading up - that is also when I came across SP and joined - and realized I need to do several things:
1. take my snacks seriously and bring them from home to ensure they are healthy choices. By spreading out your claories to 5-6 meals a day and taking a snack every 2-3 hours, I felt less hungry, had less cravings. Also snacks are the best time to get in those fruits. At work they laugh at me because of the apples & bananas I bring almost daily, but I have seen some taking up the habit.....
2. change up my exercise. I went from mainly running, to do 2-3 runs a week, go to the gym twice a week doing a combo of cardio & ST and then went swimming whenever I got a chance.

This worked very well and suddenly the pounds came off I lost 10kg that time. Meanwhile I have regained most of that, due to sickness, injury and further hormonal changes. I also lost focus for a while.
Now that I am focussing again I have lost 2kg. and know I will loose more.

Kudos to mixing up your workouts and bringing your freggies to work! I'm always carting my main snack staples to work: apples, broccoli, baby carrots, bell peppers and tomatoes... :-)

eating what I call mini meals 6-7 times a day is what helped me loose 210 pounds...I still eat that way and my DH tells people I am always eating, and have manged to loose weight ....so start eating and loose weight...of course you have to watch calories. I also plan my meals....I have kept the weight off for almost years now and still going

I like your idea of eating the small meals thru the day to break things up and the snack ideas, too. Your good habits are rubbing off on your co-workers emoticon !

I have had similar experiences- hormones- can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em, but they sure keep life interesting. My work lunches / snacks are the easiest time for me to get those fruits and veggies in too (I keep a placemat in my drawer and line up my banana, apple, berries and nuts on my desk) - as well, I fill my 24 oz water bottle before my shift and on each break. add in my planned meals and life is good

Need to get focused again

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Ok, now after 2 months of letting myself go I need to get back in the rut of regular exercise. Have made a start this morning by going to the gym early before work for the first time in 2 months. This works better for me, since the evenings tend to be hectic and unexpected long site meetings etc. throw my plans often over board. I had switched to evenings when I was trying to study in the mornings for the course I was taking. But I am not studying in the mornings. Need to figure out when to study, because I want to schedule the exam for end of June if my pre-qualification is accepted. But the exercise needs to be priority as well, since I need it as stress relief as well.

Good luck on your exam! There was a time when I was a dedicated morning workout person, hopping onto my treadmill first thing in the a.m. But I sorta lost that mojo and now do my workouts after work mostly.

No weightloss this week

Sunday, May 19, 2013

This was one week of bad eating. Mindless eating, poor choices.

Ok, I had the usual work stress,
then mental stress - a cousin of mine passed away and I didn;t even know she was sick, she had lung cancer
the frustration - the company offering me the job has withdrawn the offer, because of the work permit issue, this is the second job within a few weeks because of that

So I did not concentrate on eating at all, and also only did minimal exercise. during the week.

Hormones are also going crazy again. So when I weighed in on Friday I was actually up again. But will weigh again tomorrow, since hormones do play a role.

Down to 83kg

Thursday, May 09, 2013

Lost another pound! The 80kg barrier is coming closer!!!!!
Am happy, that I lost even though I am still not able to exercise as much as I would want to.
Job front also looks hopeful:

Had the third interview for a job I am being head-hunted for. This job sounds interesting and challenging with good future, even though it won't give much of a salary increment right now.

Also touching conversation with one of the site foremen today. I went to visit his project site, which I had not managed to go to in 1 month. As we walked around to see where his team is not progressing and why, we chatted and I mentioned to him, that if I get the right job I will leave the company. He was really shocked and then he told me something that was totally unexpected and touched me:
The engineers/technicians like me, some have stayed with this company because of me! They respect me and want me to stay. I told him why I think it is time for me to move on and he understood.

Well lets see what the future brings in terms of weight loss and job opportunities...

Woo-hoo for that weight being gone! And I'm really glad to hear of the interview! How cool is it to get all that recognition form the people you actually work with--I think that's a real barometer of how you work and act on the job despite all the crap. Only best wishes, my friend!

NO weight loss this week

Friday, May 03, 2013

Yep, that's the truth, this week I did not loose anything. But also did some bad food choices. Works still as stressful and frustrating as ever, now also highly unmotivated and every morning starts with a crisis in one of the projects.
I really need another job, so I can get a normal live and some routine again

Hey, no gain though, right? Maybe once you get thru this bad spot it'll come off again? I'm guessing here, because I know the cortisol made by stress does some wacky things on the body. Hang in there, buddy. emoticon emoticon

I've made some bad food choices too and I haven't lost any weight. I care about my weight but I've found that training for my first marathon has taken all of my focus. I don't stress the scale, I just make sure I get my miles in. Maybe you should focus on a physical ability goal while the scale doesn't want to move, one day you may find your weight dropped.

I now fully understand what stress did to me. While I was on travel, I saw one of my closest friends. A year & a half ago, the world was beating him down. I also noticed he had gained weight. This past week, I had dinner with him and he looked good AND happy! We need to fight through the stress and not let it get to us. Now, I run or bike if something is getting to me. It works! All the best and be strong!
