Update on an ill pet

Monday, May 21, 2012

Blue (my parakeet) was seen by the vet this afternoon. He trimmed her beak and sent her home. As usual, her liver causes her trouble, but the vet was not particularly concerned. She must have just had a bad couple of days and then moved past it. Animals are amazing that way!

I'm relieved and I appreciate all the well wishes from the SP community. emoticon

Common Sense Wake Up Call

Saturday, May 19, 2012

My calorie count was high on the majority of the days this week. After some consideration of the problem, daily lunches were responsible for the bulk of my problems:

*We had run out of the bread that usually makes my lunch sandwich. I checked the chest freezer and found some bread to use for my sandwiches. Turns out, that bread had twice the calories.
What did I learn? Make a run to the grocery store and purchase some low cal (whole grain, if possible?) bread to tide me over until we can get into the city to purchase the variety we like.

*Avoid packing anything in my lunch that has more than 100 calories per serving.

*Higher calories food items that I'm not willing to do without...pack a half serving (Cheerios in my trail mix, and bananas).

*If a student brings me a delicious birthday treat (bless their hearts emoticon) pack it up for my son, put it in the staff workroom to share, or take just one bite (and savor it) and descreetly dispose of the remainder.
IF I decide to enjoy and entire treat, I need to accept the fact that I will be eating a large salad for supper. emoticon

Looking back on my deep thoughts, it is all common sense. Tracking calories and food items was a necessity. Before Sparkpeople, I'd do the tracking in a notebook using a calorie book or various calorie counting websites. SP food tracker is so much more convenient. emoticon

Here's how I did (or rather, didn't) following my 2,000 calorie/day limit:

Sat., May 12 2,500
Sun., May 13 2,579
Mon., May 14 1,877
Tues., May 15 2,105
Wed., May 16 2,603
Thurs., May 17 2,231
Fri., May 18 1,897

I'm excited. Next week will be 100% better! As long as I do not splurge during the birthday party tomorrow.....

Good on You! It's great you step back, find the problem and then a solution!

Whoo Hoo! You're a great example of how to make things happen!

A Pet that is Ill

Friday, May 18, 2012

One of my pets, a parakeet named Blue, has an enlarged liver. It crowds her lungs (did you know birds have many, many lungs?) which makes it difficult to breathe. In addition, the imbalance of her system causes her beak to grow at an accelerated rate to the point that she needs to be brought to the vet monthly to have it trimmed.

When Blue's condition was first diagnosed, more than a year ago (she was probably born with this condition) the vet thought little birdie would only survive a month. She and her playmate, Sunny, have been just fine up until this point. Happy and active as ever.

Blue becomes irritable when I go about the daily routine of feeding and watering so I know something must be up. I'll call the vet later today and make an appointment.

Please, keep my feathered friend in your thoughts. Thank you so much. emoticon

Blue and Sunny were adopted from the animal shelter about 5 years ago when they were just budgies. So cute!

I get sad when any animal is sick. So I will pray for Blue. I hope that you will hear good news.

Dirt Under My Nails

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The tulips need to be moved before the workmen begin on Monday. It took a few hours to move a huge clump of bulbs (two more to go). What a beautiful day it was. Whenever I found a worm, my son insisted I give it to him. He'd look at the worm and say, "Look at him! He's so cute." Then he's throw it back into the dirt.

I should sleep well tonight. emoticon
