chocolate, cream cheese, and peanut butter

Friday, June 18, 2010

The company I temp at has a company trip today until Sunday. Most of the office went on the trip but a few people stayed behind. As a consolation, I guess, the powers-that-be decided to buy lunch for those of us stuck here. I was really good and ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion, and NO MAYO. It came with chips that I planned on (and actually followed through with) not eating. It was tough picking out something healthy from the menu, but the real struggle came when I received this email from another person in the office today:

ĒTo anyone who did not go on the New Orleans Trip here at corporate, please help yourself to a piece (or 2 or 3) of Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese/Peanut Butter Icing which is on the coffee table by the SAFE. Enjoy!Ē

A few hours later, this followed:

ďGlad everyone enjoyed the cake. There is still some left for desert if you want. Eat up.Ē

Now you mention chocolate, cream cheese, or peanut butter separately and I drool; but put them all in one sentence together and this is my personal temptation hell. But Iím happy to report that I retained my willpower and did NOT have any cake today! (Ok, Iím proud to report that I didn't have cake. Iím not happy about it.)

C25K: weeks 1-4

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Iím very behind on my blog but I wanted to start an update on my fitness. Last I gave a blog update on that, it was dismal. I didnít have much hope for my knees and stamina as far as running goes. I decided, however, that I would begin the Couch to 5K (C25K) program and keep up as much as I could. It was and still is my philosophy that Iím going to keep goingóand staying on scheduleóas long as I can. If it gets too hard or hurts my knees too bad, Iíll take a break or stop. This program is 3 days a week for 9 weeks, though, and Iím currently almost halfway through and still able to do it! My next day will be day 3 of week 4.

The workoutís the same for each day of each week (so far). I followed weeks 1 & 2 almost exactly as instructed.

Week 1:
20 mins total:
8 reps of the following:
1 min of jogging
1.5 mins of walking
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Week 2:
21 mins total:
6 reps of the following:
1.5 mins of jogging
2 mins of walking
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
~~Starting with week 3, you have the option of going for time or going for distance. Iím going with distance, since my goal is running a 5K.~~

Week 3:
1.76 miles total:
*Jog 0.22 miles
*Jog 0.22 miles
Jog 0.11 miles
Walk 0.11 miles
Jog 0.22 miles
Jog 0.22 miles
Jog 0.11 miles
Walk 0.11 miles
Jog 0.22 miles
Jog 0.22 miles

*I added these intervals to increase distance, since the mileage as written is actually less for week 3 (1.32 miles) than for week 2 (1.55 miles). I want to move forwards, not backwards, after all!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Week 4:
2 miles total:
Jog 0.25 mile
Walk 0.125 mile
Jog 0.5 mile
Walk 0.25 mile
Jog 0.25 mile
Walk 0.125 mile
Jog 0.5 mile

Next week is when the real modifications start because I think week 5 is set up ridiculously. But for now, Iím just focusing on D3 of this week (Sunday). Iíll keep everyone updated as I continue.

Gained weight for no good reason

Saturday, May 08, 2010

I gained 0.6 lb this week and donít know why. I only missed 0.5 a workout and I stayed within my calories every day except yesterday. I know yesterdayís food didnít do it either, because I cheated and weighed myself Wednesday and the scale already registered a gain by that point. I knew this week would probably not be good after last weekís 5.3 lb loss, but a 0.6 lb gain?! Thatís how much I gained Easter week, and I ate out, overate, and drank almost a bottle of wine that week. This is just a little ridiculous. Iím not beating myself up over it because I know I did *almost* everything right. I just want to know why! For all those people that think itís as simple as creating a 3500-cal deficit, Iíd like to point out that youíre wrong. Bodies are so much more complex than that!

Don't beat yourself up. You could be building muscle which weighs more. If you are working out everyday then that could be what is happening. Take your measurements and go off those for a couple weeks and see if there is a difference.

This sounds like me, up and down over and over every week. And nothing seems to make a difference, positive or negative. Maybe we just need to think positive and focus on the the good weeks!

Hang in there! Water weight maybe? My scale has been going up and down like a yo-yo with the same 3 lbs.. SO I know what your saying! This week will be better!

It's OK--it could be water weight...you could be getting ready to start your period :)

Bodies are way more complex than I'd like them to be. I feel your frustrations! Last week I exercised more then usual and ate around the same amount of calories I always eat in a week yet I only lost .3 It was really frustrating because of how much more exercising I did in my head I thought for sure I was going to loose more. And then there are times where I go up a few oz's like you from not doing anything out of the norm! Maybe you built some muscle mass? Since muscle weighs more then fat it could be the attributing factor. Or maybe a little water weight? Whatever it was keep pushing forward and way to go on the 5.3 loss the week before! That's awesome!

Irish priest joke

Tuesday, May 04, 2010

Someone at my gym told me this one last week and I nearly fell off the elliptical.

Father O'Grady was walking down the aisle after his Sunday service and saw Mary sitting in the pew crying.

He asked, "What's bothering you, Mary, my dear?"

She said, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night."

"Oh, Mary, that's terrible! Tell me, did he have any last requests?"

"That he did, Father."

"What did he ask, Mary?"

"He looked me straight in the eyes and said, 'Please Mary, put down the gun.'"

a fitness slap in the face

Monday, May 03, 2010

Back in March, I found out there was going to be a 5k nearby in June and I wanted to try it. So I tried adding jogging into my fitness program sparingly. My knees hurt so bad that that lasted only about 2 weeks before I called it quits. Last week, I saw a flier at my gym for an upcoming 5k in August. I picked it up and contemplated trying for this race. This 5kís even closer (less than a 15 min drive). I knew my knees might still bother me, but Iíve lost weight since then so I thought it might not be as bad what with less weight putting stress on my joints. Let me tell you what! Tonight I did walking/jogging intervals (1 min: 1.5 min) outside with the intent of doing 25-30 mins total. I made it to 12 mins and thought I was going to die. My lungs felt like they were going to explode, my leg muscles were tired, and my knees really hurt. I continued walking until I hit 20 mins but I just couldnít handle anymore. Iím not giving up yet; I have plenty of time to train. And I don't think I was ready for the 1:1.5 intervals. But Iím starting to suspect that my goal of being able to run a 5k just isnít in the cards for me because of these knees.

Hang in there. You will do it. IF not this one than another one will come along. Keep on pressing in there for that goal!

Have a great day

Maybe try adjusting to a walk/jog schedule to gradually work up to intervals. Walk 5 minutes- Jog to a 30 count -Repeat. Each week add to your count. Maybe this would build up your knees and stamina at an easier pace. Maybe you should adjust your intensity- a slow jog compared to a run. I'd like to do a 5K eventually but I know it will be next year before I try. Good LucK!
