New Feature: Privacy option for SparkPages

Friday, February 29, 2008

Hi Everyone!

We've made a change to SparkPages that we wanted to let you know about.

If you go to edit your SparkPage, at the top right is now a checkbox that says "Only allow my friends to see my page." If you check this box, only those people who are friends on your SparkPage will be able to see it. Even if someone adds you as a friend, if you haven't added them they still can't see your page.

We wanted to make this privacy option available to those who want to use it.

I also agree. People who use the site should have the availability of this option so that they can obtain the level of privacy they need to feel comfortable. Thank you.

Still a little bit confusing, but I think I'm getting there. How do I add a buddy(friend) if I can't access their Spark Page?

YESI1211 3/14/2008 11:21AM

I like the fact that pages were public because people come here to find and stay motivated and encouraged and being able to freely surf SP for that push they need is what SP is all about. If everyone makes their pages private I believe SP will lose rank with the members. I vote for taking that feature out. It beats the purpose of SP which I thought was a support system for people trying to lose weight.

SP_STAFF 3/3/2008 9:53AM

    To answer some questions:
- If a page is private and you'd like to see it, you can SparkMail the person to add you as a friend.
- This will affect SparkPeople Motivators in that if your page is private, only your friends can see it and thus only your friends can vote.

Overall, we are figuring that this option won't get use too often. However, a number of members have requested this, as some people are more private than others for different understandble reasons.

VKKESU 3/2/2008 11:45AM

To me........true motivators will not block their pages. They will also not put out personal information that could be dangerous (just like we teach our kids) for everyone in the world to know. If someone is using the blog for personal reasons, this will be a great option. If it's to help and motivate others nothing should change. (I mean if you have 50 friends from this internet site , how many do you REALLY know anyway).

Oftentimes, I get to "meet" a friend by viewing their spark page. If I don't read about them how will I know I even WANT them as a friend? I guess it is fine for those that don't want anything out there, but why even have a spark page if you don't want people to read it?

I am afraid I just don't understand, but I guess it is OK for those who want this option.

Thank you so much for adding this option! I've been so impressed by SparkPeople's sensitivity to the needs of all of it's members, even when needs are so varied sometimes. I can think of so many situations where this option will allow users to feel more comfortable using the incredible features that SparkPeople offers without sacrificing their own safety and peace-of-mind.

As always, I'm amazed at the content and enhancements that are continually going on with SP. I, personally, don't care who sees anything I'm doing - it keeps me accountable, but this is great for those who don't quite feel that way yet.

Some people have been abused or talk about their violent marriages, and the idea that their abusers or husbands or people at work would read about their cry for help, has scared some members. This new feature, will effectively protect those members, so they can still get support from friends, but not be seen by others. Most people probably won't use it, but I do think it's a good idea to have the option. Thank you Spark People.

I'm with everyone else. I think it's good to have others see our spark pages. If it's mostly because of the blogs, then they can check to have them private. I think we all need that extra support anyway. You can make so many new friends by random people seeing your spark page, just don't create one if you don't want anyone to see it.

Report Inappropriate Comment
SHADOZA 3/1/2008 2:56AM

People who want to make their page private could do it before this change. The good thing is now those that do not feel ready to publicize their struggles can enter the "circle" one step at a time by allowing those they trust to visit their page first. Later, perhaps, when these individuals become more confident, they will open up to the world of SparkPeople.

Just my thinking...

DACHSIE1 3/1/2008 2:19AM

I don't see this as a positive thing. The purpose of Spark people is to all be able to help each other. Why does it have to get complicated with privacy issues. If people don't want anyone to know there situation, then why do they join Spark People? Just a thought.

I too must say that though I can see that this could be good, I see more not good in it than good-for the reasons stated here. Why be on here if you are just going to make it where people cant see you? Kinda takes away from the community idea that is a major key to the success of SP.

JUDY4FITNESS 2/29/2008 11:53PM

I won't be taking advantage of this option. I like the visits to my page and also to make visits to other Spark Pages! It seems if someone doesn't want the abilility for others to see their page, they might be better to NOT create one.

It is too bad. The great feature of Spark is that we work together as a group to help each other achieve our goals. This is a unique feature that is not offered in other weight loss web sites. It sounds like we are headed to become individual islands rather than a community.

I have some of the same questions...I often use the Spark Pages when greeting new people and on the message boards I use it to see if I see something to give me some insight on how and what to respond about. If you don't want a person to list you as a friend....you have the option to delete it. As someone else mentioned, you can't add them as your friend if you aren't on their Spark Page. I guess if it bothers some folks, it's okay, but it's not my choice...my spark Page says a lot about who I am.

They have to type in your user name on their own sparkpage ...

My concern about this feature is more along the lines of Community Team and Team Leader requirements. I've received so many words of thanks from people because I visit new Team & Spark member pages to welcome them; sometimes catch a team members blog title which tells me they need some encouragement, etc., but don't want to say anything on the boards because the're not wanting to hear a bunch of platitudes at the moment ...

I think the pages should be private to non-spark members & have no intention of making mine private ... I try to write blogs (another CT requirement) that are upbeat, inspirational, motivating, and sometimes just humorous with the idea that by doing so I am helping others.

Another question I have posted on the CT message board thread about this subject is "what's the difference between choosing to have your page offline, and making it private? ... isn't this feature somewhat defeating in terms of encouraging others, dropping off "goodies" (I use them as rewards for people who do well and participate in challenges I set up), and finding people who are in obvious trouble & need to be brought to the attention of the Coaches?

New Feature & CONTEST! Win SparkPoints & Cash!

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Hello Everyone!

We're excited to announce big improvements to our "WebSearch" page and a related new contest and SparkPoints opportunity!

New WebSearch
Most Internet users like to set a search engine like Google or Yahoo as their homepage, and some like to customize this page with things like news or favorite links. SparkPeople has always offered our WebSearch page to use in this way, but this week we launched some major changes to the page. You can customize your page in a number of ways:

  • See your local weather, including the current temperature and forecast.
  • Choose different news feeds that change throughout the day. Subjects include News, Entertainment, and Health News.
  • View fun SparkPeople content, including our motivational Quote of the Day. You can then also search the web with a search powered by Google or search all of the content and resources on SparkPeople.

How WebSearch Helps You and Helps SparkPeople
By setting your browser's homepage as www.SparkPeople.com/WebSearch, you WILL be more likely to reach your goals. The reason is that you will be reminded of the tools, content, and community on SparkPeople each and every time you use your web browser.

You can also help SparkPeople, because when you search the web via Google, SparkPeople will earn income on some of your searches. SparkPeople's CEO Chris Downie (aka SPARKGUY) recently said, "Besides telling their friends to use SparkPeople, WebSearch is the biggest way members can help support SparkPeople so we can remain a free site. Plus, it's a really cool and useful page!"

SparkPoints and Contest
To help encourage members to set our WebSearch as their homepage, we are offering 2 fun incentives:
  1. When you set our WebSearch page as your homepage you will earn 25 SparkPoints.
  2. After setting SP as your homepage and earning your 25 SparkPoints, You will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes. Twenty-five people will win a $100 cash prize!

To Make Our WebSearch Your Browser Homepage and Enter the Contest
It is very easy to do this in most browsers. Simply visit www.SparkPeople.com/WebSearch. Then, login and click the link just under the search box that says "Click Here to Make This Your Homepage." Note that if you've already added us as your homepage you'll need to click the link again to earn your SparkPoints and be entered into the contest. (Click here for contest rules.)

As always, we thank you for your support!

Announcing SparkGoodies + 2 more Features

Thursday, February 07, 2008

Hi everyone!

We wanted to let you know about 3 new features and enhancements that we have added to the site today.

#1: SparkGoodies! Now, you can use the SparkPoints you earn to buy virtual “goodies” for yourself and others. We’re very excited for this new feature, which makes earning SparkPoints even more fun, and lets members reward themselves for their hard work and others for their support and accomplishments. You can learn more about how it works by reading this article or going to your SparkPage (Goodies are located on the left side below the photos).

#2: SparkTeams privacy. As of today, you can now choose which SparkTeams appear on your SparkPage. This was a frequent request by our members who want more privacy in terms of their interests, medical conditions and other lifestyle choices. What it means is this:

  • Private SparkTeams will never appear on your SparkPage for others to see.
  • You can choose to remove other public SparkTeams from your Page as well. If you belong to any SparkTeams that you don’t want to “publicize” for any reason, you won’t have to. To remove SparkTeams from your SparkPage, make sure you’re logged in and go to yourMy SparkTeams page. Uncheck the “Display on SparkPage” box next to any Teams that you don’t want to display on your SparkPage.

#3: SparkTeam Leader icons. This is a small enhancement. If you are a SparkTeam leader, a “leader” icon will appear on your SparkPage under that SparkTeam name. For example, since I lead the “Calling All Vegetarians” SparkTeam, people who visit my SparkPage will see that Team name/icon and that I’m the leader for that Team.

We hope that these new enhancements will make your experience at SparkPeople even better!

I do not understand why Private Spark Teams no longer show up on SparkPages. I have devoted hours and hours along with a co-leader in leading a Private SparkTeam - Now our Team Icon does not show up on the Team Members SparkPages. We feel like we have been ripped of our stripes and demoted. We no longer share the enthusiasm we once did for leading and promoting this team. I get the feeling SparkPeople is discouraging Private Teams.
I did inquire as to why, but don't feel I got a justifiable answeras to why SP decided to do this. Why can't the TeamMembers have the choice as to the Private Team Icon showing up on the SparkPage or not?

As a Team Leader, I know how much time can be spent by trying to lead a team. I honestly don't know where some of these leaders with families-careers-children find the time. I am retired and have quit chairing some of my Sports and Social Club events to be here for my Team Members. Our Team will be looking for a new Team Captain and Co-Leader to take over at the end of the month. A lot of our Team Members have already joined other challenge groups.

I think Team Leaders should be able to earn extra points for the time they put in being here for their Team Members. The points are usually used for incentive and motivation for team members anyway.

Don't forget to show your appreciation to your Team Leaders on occasion.
It can be a very time consuming endeaver to lead a team and so a pat on the back on occasion encourages them to stay and hang out and continue to lead. MA

when I'm off all medications, great shape and health and cute, adorable NANA before 60. Buahahahaha!!!

Thanks Chris -- PAM in Wichita, KS

It offers so much to so many different people. My favorite thing is the goodies: I'm addicted to getting Spark points so that I can "Spark" people every day. It's been fun. Thank you again

I watched Ellen and it was great to see how successful these women were. I'm a newbie and I can only imagine(for now)how great it feels to reach your goal. It was a great motivator to see these women. I wish they had more time to talk about SP. I am so happy to have found this site. I'd love people to know how helpful this site is. First being free helps financially of course but more importantly allows you to trust that people really want to help and not just make a buck. Also, the website is a great frame work to help people customize their own plan. How easy it is to use to track food and fitness and it is a wealth of information. Never before have I been able to follow through on recording my food intake, now I look forward to logging it in! And lastly the message boards are a wonderful support. What I really like about them is that I can talk to people who can relate to my interests. It is great to share about this journey of getting healthy but also you can share ideas about your interests and passions, which in my case is Art. This goes a long way in helping you to live your life to its fullest which is so important in keeping you from focusing on food! Thanks SP!
