Introducing Facebook Registration to SparkPeople

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

You've probably noticed more and more websites these days prompting you to log in or create an account by using your existing Facebook account. This is a quick and easy way for Facebook users to join a plethora of websites with one click, saving time during registration.

Today, we have added this functionality to SparkPeople. Since so many people are using Facebook logins now and Facebook has so many members, we wanted to make the option available for those who like it.

New registrants who come to the site will now have the option to join SparkPeople by using their Facebook account (if they have one). These Facebook registrants will also log back in to the site this way each time they return. This new login method is completely optional. New members can still join the site just like everyone else always has: by creating a username and a password to log in to SparkPeople.

What does this mean for you?
If you're already a member, you can continue logging in to SparkPeople with the username and password you've always used. Because of this new functionality, all members will see some new links on our login pages that prompt you to log in using your Facebook account, but these links only apply to people who have connected their Facebook account to SparkPeople. Everyone else can simply ignore these links. We just wanted to let you know what they were for in case you were confused about seeing them.

However, some of you may recall that SparkPeople has had a Facebook-connect option for a long time, as a way for you to choose to share certain SparkPeople tasks (weighing in, joining a Team, tracking exercise, your Current Status, etc.) on your Facebook wall automatically. If you want to connect your SparkPeople account to Facebook, you can earn SparkPoints by doing so. AND, you can also use the "log in with Facebook" options we mentioned above (optional) anytime you log back into the site. To learn more about the SparkPeople-Facebook connect, click here: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/spark-facebook.asp.

Please remember that if you do not use Facebook, or do not want to connect your accounts, this has absolutely no impact on you whatsoever. We don't make anything off of this; we are offering this as an option for those people who prefer to sign in to multiple sites using their Facebook information. Also note that our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions have not changed.

If you have any questions, please post them below or on our support message boards.

Just seeing the word Facebook makes me cringe. I know that SparkPeople has not announced any changes to the current way of doing things, but just in case there is thought to the contrary, I need to share my thoughts. I like that there is a certain amount of anonymity on this site. Although Facebook can be set to "private" there are often glitches that can make an account fairly public. Due to the nature of my employment, I prefer that my clients don't know everything about my weight loss struggles and health issues. I like that people can't really search me by name. It allows me to use this site as intended - honestly and without too much worry that my privacy is going to be violated.

Facebook still has a lot of issues.

I have found when I attach a message from Sparks to show on or SHARE with FB I get unwanted emails from ?? to make money. I bounce them back and delete, but its very annoying. So I have quite using the SHARE from SParks on FB.

If I read this correct then my fitness tracker is set up for Spark America even though I am not from the USA. At least in the past with Spark World you could opt out of the USA and be a part of the international group. As a person not from the USA I would like an option to not have SparkAmerica attached to my fitness minutes.

actually, because i post my blog posts to Facebook, my family and some of my friends have stepped up behind me and started to support me in my journey. i was kinda surprised.

I first sent a blog post to Facebook because i had a set back... and i needed others to see. Keeping my issues quiet, was just like saying *only i see it, so it really doesn't matter*

People who know you, know your fat... that's not a secret... unless you think it is...

If you need to hide the fact you had a set back, or a extra piece of cake... then whats the REAL issue?

I am active on Facebook but sparkpeople is something that's mine and don't want to share my detailed life on eating with them. As someone said previously, if my friends are interested, they can join sparkpeople and find alot of support if they want it. I feel that its nice for people who want to share it on FB, to have that opportunity. But for me, it would be the wrong choice. I do however, spread the spark all the time.

Notice how many of your member disagree!!!
Face book is full of nasty individuals contrasted by Sparkpeople who have all been nice and supportive..
Face book members are out to make a name for themselves by any means---Sparkpeople are improving themselves physically and sometimes spiritually through wholesome lifestyle changes.
If a FB member wants to improve their life style they will find SP. My concern is that GREED has taken over SP corporate and the very principles that make this site work for so many are now at risk!!

A Message from SparkGuy: Announcing the Launch of SparkAmerica

Monday, August 02, 2010

Hello SparkPeople Members!

I'm excited to share with you the launch of an exciting new program and website called SparkAmerica! Here is the official announcement page, but I wanted to share some thoughts with you here as well.

SparkAmerica is a new campaign that has many fun and exciting aspects.

First, SparkAmerica is a great way to motivate YOU to stay on track to reach your goals. It emphasizes taking consistent, small actions that make a big difference, such as doing 10 minutes of daily fitness and earning SparkPoints on the site. We have seen these types of activities change so many lives over the years. Several years ago, we created an online program in our hometown called SparkCincinnati that was similar to this. It was a hit around the city and we have always wanted to take this program national (and eventually global). Now is the time for SparkAmerica!

Second, SparkAmerica is a great new way to Spread the Spark to everyone you know. Our number one source of new members is current members who spread the spark. But we know that many members feel uncomfortable talking about weight loss with their friends. SparkAmerica changes all of this since it is a new site that is geared toward everyoneónot just people who might be interested in losing weight. So, itís a great way for you to help your friends, family and co-workers reach their goals.

Third, SparkAmerica is an opportunity for all of us to work together to make a major impact on the lives of Americansóand eventually people around the world! It's a great example of what we see on the site every day: members reaching their own goals, supporting and motivating each other, and then Spreading the Spark to more people. Imagine if we're able to do this on an even larger scale!

SparkAmerica will be integrated into your current SparkPeople experience. We're rolling this out slowly and will add more references to SparkAmerica on the SparkPeople website (like on the Fitness Tracking page, for example). You can also visit www.SparkAmerica.com and share it with your friends.

Since SparkAmerica is such an exciting program, several major partners have already signed on to help participate in this campaign. YOUR participation and enthusiasm will make it even easier for us to continue to partner with even more great organizations. This could even turn into a great way for us to feature SparkPeople members in major media stories about SparkAmerica and SparkPeople. Who knows, eventually we could even have a TV show or special that grows out of this concept! I know all of this is possible because of the excitement I see on the site every day.

Please let me know your thoughts below.

Thanks for your support. I appreciate it. SparkCheers!

Chris "SparkGuy" Downie

P.S. For our members outside the United States, our goal is to eventually add this program for more countries as well. The more members and tracking we get from other countries, the easier it will be to work with possible partners in those countries to turn this into a big program for our international members.

A great way to work towards losing weight, to be healthier, happier and feeling better about yourself. I love the support you get of other members on here as well. This is so beneficial and extends to more people which is more help and support you get than trying to do this on your own. No matter the age, gender or race, we are all here for the same reasons and that makes it that much more encouraging to be able to help each other out. Thanks again for all you all do and I'm looking forward to the new up and coming changes to the sites that sound so awesome! Thanks again,

I love SparkPeople. I didn't have any success with Weightwatchers and had tried multiple times to lose weight with them. I have a concern about SparkPeople. What about after you lose your weight? I think there should be a section where you can get help on how to maintain your weight as with the same features as when you are losing weight. I am not complaining I just feel it should be addressed to. For the first time in my adult life I feel that I am going to lose my weight and keep it off. This week I am under 200 lbs. This is the first time in years! I am so happy. I just feel there needs to be help about maintaining your weight. I know that I need that help. Thank you so much!

Downie is a surname of Irish origin[1]. It is an Anglicisation of the Old Irish ” Dunadhaigh, combing the Gaelic prefix ” (originally meaning "grandson") and Dunadhach, the keeper of a fort.

65 New SparkGoodies to Give and Receive!

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

We know how much our members love giving and receiving SparkGoodies, and you've been great about sharing your suggestions with us. So yesterday, we added 65 brand new SparkGoodies for you to choose from when rewarding yourself and others for a job well done!

Many of these were suggestions from our members, such as seasonal Goodies (we added a rake, snow shovel, pumpkin, Mardi Gras beads, and more.), congratulatory greetings (congratulations, a bear hug, hearts, love, confetti and more), and more food and fitness Goodies (how do measuring cups, a fortune cookie, hula hoop and boxing gloves sound?).

You can go to any SparkPage and click "Give USERNAME a Goodie" to browse through the newly updated store.

If SparkGoodies are new to you, read the article below for more information:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivation_articles.asp?id=1018

We hope you enjoy these brand new SparkGoodies, which give you a fun way to spend all those SparkPoints you earn. Thanks for all of the great suggestions!

Yes, the new goodies are very nice, but I would also like to see some "cheaper" ones for those of us who may have a lot of friends they would like to treat. Also could you provide some seasonal goodies for holidays that are more on the spiritual side, like a Christmas star, manger scene a Bible or a menorrha (not sure of the spelling)?

Thanks for keeping SP so fresh and interesting. emoticon

Site Improvements for People with Diabetes

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Hi everyone

We are excited to launch our first round of improvements to the site for people with diabetes (types 1 and 2) and pre-diabetes. We know that diabetes is on the rise nationwide, and we have received many, many requests for these improvements. We plan to launch more enhancements later this year, but for now the new features for people with diabetes include:

1) An enhanced glucose tracker, where you can now specify the time of day you tracked your blood sugar (pre-breakfast, post-lunch, etc). This tracker is on your Weigh-In page (and also at the top of your Nutrition Tracker page.

2) Improvements to your Nutrition Tracker, including carbohydrate and calorie goals for every meal and the ability to track glucose directly from the top of the page.

3) Easier to access tools for people with diabetes. This includes:

- New links from your Start page if you are in our diabetes management program

- A new page summarizing all our content and resources for people with diabetes

- A new page to make it easy to change your settings to tell us if you have Type 2, Type 1, or pre-diabetes (or take yourself out of the program)

In addition to these changes just launched, we will be launching more new features later in 2010. The biggest will be meal plans customized for people with diabetes.

To access this program:

- If you had previously told us you have diabetes during your account set-up, you are automatically in this program. You'll find a link to these features from your Start page and your Nutrition Tracker.

- To change (or check) your settings to use this program you can visit www.sparkpeople.com/resource/diabetes-diet-settings.asp.

Finally, if you have any feedback on the program, please reply to this topic in our Managing Diabetes SparkTeam: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x629x35098942.

We hope that these new features will make SparkPeople even easier and more beneficial for people who have diabetes. If you know of anyone else who might benefit from our free tools and this new Diabetes Management Program, please share this link with them. Thanks!

Would really love to have an Enhanced Nutrition Tracker for NON-diabetics, my diabetic girlfriend uses the enhanced tracker for individual meal goals, its an excellent feature.

I tried setting myself to pre-diabetic which gave me the individual meal goals that I wanted but it wont let me change certain goals like protein & fats etc that I would like it to do.

Any chance of getting this enhanced tracker for everyone??

So far I'm sorta dissappointed. I have to do low carb, but I'd still like to use the glucose tracker but I had to turn off the diabetes thing altogether since I can't use the dietary tracker that you've designed for diabetics.

this isn't reasonable since low carb is recommended for obese diabetics.

I just want to say thank you Sparkguy and the community. I've joined several online weight loss site, but found this to me the most productive and beneficial to me. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and this site has literally inspired me to love myself, right where I am, but to add a spark or two, or maybe even three to keep me motivated and stay focus on the big picture. I've encouraged several friends to joined the site. It has been a great support for me regarding my meals and very informative regarding my type 2 diabetes. I have literally came out of my shell and challenged myself to do better everyday. Most importantly, if I get hungry, I eat healthy snacks like a boiled egg, a piece of fruit, or a piece of protein ( just a small piece with veggies).

I have loved sparkpeople and it has been invaluable to me. However, I was so annoyed reading this blog this morning. When signed up for sparkpeople, I had to agree to the terms of use starting it was NOT for people w/ type 1 diabetes, yet I get an email about this blog FOR people with diabetes. Either you want to help us or you want to legally cover your ass. Which is it? If I knew where to complaint I would. I've recommended this site to many friends with type 1, but... I added your type 1 nutrition tracker today, and it was totally useless. Basically, it broke down all the calories equally by meal. So, apparently if I have Type 1, I have to eat exactly the same amount at each meal and snack?? What if I have too much morning insulin resistance for so many carbs at breakfast? What is I use carb counting for my insulin? I hope someone contacts me so I can explain my concerns!

As a Type 1 person, this Diabetes-specific feature is welcome. While there are many people with Type 2, since only 10% of people are Type 1 there are far fewer apps and resources for us.

After 40 years' controlling Type 1, keeping informed and staying on top of diet, nutrition, blood glucose levels, and general health is something I do daily. Thanks for this welcome addition to my tool kit, along with my blood glucose meter, my SP Nutrition Tracker has become invaluable and in daily use.

emoticon emoticon emoticon
A side request to pass along to the correct Spark staff, more health or Diabetes-specific Emoticons would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,
John

I have a family predisposition for Adult onset type insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 for my grandfather and my grandmother was diagnosed as brittle type 1 both have died due to complications of BOTH diseases), and I am afraid I will need the kind of information and support later if I do go the same way they did....

Yes, both are different, Yes things will be improved here! It has been greatly improved since the first time I tried the site (I just came back to Sparkpeople to get my weight and lifestyle back on track!)

Thanbk you for giving me and others a tool we can use and help shape and make better!

Whew! I thought it was just me who "lost" the decimal point! VERY frustrating after all the excitement I initially experienced with all the other improvements.

PLEASE bring back the decimal point! I am not always able to get internet access to use the decimal point on the webpage. Tracking is so important to my current and continued success!!!!!

Thank you in advance to your prompt attention to and resolution of this (presumably) unintended set back!

I would like an app that you could use independent of the internet, I have an iTouch and don't have constant access to the internet. Plus I like the speed of tracking apps that aren't talking to the internet the whole time...
Just a thought.
I do think the app is SWEET, but just not as HANDY as an independent app that you sync to the website once a day or once a week... not every food, or exercise.

    Help, Help....
I'm a new user to the program and I'm getting frustrated with the measuring system. I don't have a ounce or digital scale. (Can Spark People add one to the product page with a low intro price?) When I try to convert with the converter, it's just not doable.
Bottom line, how much is o.3 cups of Hummus or 0.5 tbsp of Peanut Butter? Crackers, 0.75 oz? I FEEL like Charlie Brown when Lucy keeps moving THAT football!!!! There has to be a better way for the math challenged beginners to the system?

I also don't have the decimal point - very frustrating as I like to log my weight every day and have to go online to log when I'm in the .5 category ... the .5 makes all the difference for us women :) Please give us back the decimal point! emoticon

Thanks so much for this, especially the addition of the Food Groupings - I use them all the time, and this should aid my tracking a great deal. Have a wonderful day!

I have this app on my Blackberry. I came across it when I was looking for a calorie counter. I dont think i would be able to count calories all day without it! Its probably not as sophisticated as the one for iphone but it allows me to search foods, add my favorites and track cardio and calories burned. It even has reports!

Awesome! I can't wait to upgrade my phone so I can start using Spark where ever I am rather that trying to remember everything until I get home :)

Any chance that an app for the BB Storm is in the works? I really wish I could use the SparkPeople tracker easily on my phone.
