This morning, Coach Nicole appeared on local (Cincinnati) FOX 19 to explain how to workout at home without spending a lot of money. She mentioned SparkPeople's free resources, the Fitness Starter Kit (available for less than $25 at www.SparkPeopleStore.com), and even our 7-day Bootcamp workout plan!

    I found this website yesterday when it was mentioned by two ladies on a tv show called "diet trends". They said how great this place was and talked about how they wanted to get fit to join "the amazing race".
I think if you're going to give kudo's you should give them to those two ladies as well for promoting your site on television =] btw, it's a great site and Im glad I heard about it so thank you!

    I went through the January Bootcamp - but because I'm disabled I had to "adapt" EVERY exercise. The stability ball was my chair and the floor was my bed.

Wish she could offer exercises for those of us that struggle with disabilities. For now, I do the stretching CD from Arthritis Foundation called "Taking Control of Exercise" or make up stuff I can do to music.

600,000 more foods available in search! Search shared foods

Hi everyone

We launched an improvement to our "Add a Food" page yesterday where you can now search foods shared by other members right from the main search page. As a reminder, when members manually enter a food into their tracker they have the option to share with other members. Please note that these foods are not checked by SparkPeople.

There are two ways to search our shared foods:
1) On the lower right of our Add a Food page you will see a button to select titled "Search foods shared by other members"
2) If you run a normal food search and we don't find any results, we'll automatically search our shared foods.

So you can tell the difference, all shared foods will have a member's username next to the name of the food.

Our main food database has around 10,000 foods, while our shared food count is currently at around 600,000 foods. So this should be very helpful to find new foods on the market, more unique foods, international foods, and more!

    I wish when people put in a food from a package that they would input all of the nutrition information - not just the top box. Many of us are tracking items that are below the top box, such as calcium or specific vitamins. When I check and the information is not complete, then I have to input the information myself. It takes time, which is not a big deal, but it is a waste of space when you have 3, 5 or 7 of the same item listed that don't have complete information.

    Folks when you enter the foods could you please put in brackets what the quantity is. There are tons of duplications too, so i always check first before I go add something new to make sure someone has not already done so. For instance..Dempsters Whole Grain Bread..there are many entries but only 1 with (1 slice) in brackets. It just makes it easier to know how much a serving is.

This site is awesome and I can't believe we have already added so much to it.

All the improvements are great.

Thanks for designing this site, sure makes it easier when you need to do your nutrition count for the day.

    I like all the new improvements on this site so far! Is there a way to share my food with the site itself, instead of with a particular member, so that people can find it easier? I have some foods I've entered in my list that I want to share, but the last time I'd checked, the share food option was only to another member.

    MOM2ALEX2004, I think with that food you may be misspelling the food name, so it is not finding out main entry for mozzarella.

    believe it or not- I don't like this new feature. I searched this morning for mozzerella cheese, which I have been able to find before- and all it came back with was a list of about 25 or so user entered mozzerella cheeses. There really should be a way to sort so that SparkPeople entered items come up first! THAT would be a huge improvement.
Thanks for the effort, but I'm just not digging it.

    Great idea! I got tired of scrolling through comments from people who specifically said they hadn't even tried it, yet.

One other feature I would like to see is to be able to comment on your own recipe. I know it sounds a little strange, but sometimes people have questions that you could answer that way.

2 Upgrades to SparkPeople Quizzes

Good morning!

Today we launched two enhancements to one of my favorite SparkPeople features: quizzes!

First, quizzes have a fresh, new look that allows you to get instant feedback about whether your answer choice is right or wrong. (Before, you had to take the entire quiz to see your results.) We think this will make quizzes more fun and interactive than before.

And second, we've added the ability for members to comment on quizzes. (Remember that you must be logged in to make comments.) To comment on a quiz (click here to see an example), you first have to take the quiz. On the final results page, scroll down to see member comments and to leave your own. Commenting on a quiz is a fun way to discuss what you think about the questions, how well you did, or what you learned, for example.

Please keep in mind that SparkPeople has two types of quiz formats: quizzes, which have right and wrong answers to fact-based questions; and assessments, which teach you more about yourself by asking questions that don't have any right or wrong answers. These updates today apply to quizzes only, not assessments.

We hope you will enjoy the fresh look of our quizzes and take advantage of the ability to comment on them!

    I already tried out the new quizzes and it is really cool to see the results as you go along. To see immediate results as to whether you are right or wrong on a certain question is very helpful for me.     This is a great idea. I also agree with wanting to have the ability to review quizzes and polls that I have taken earlier and change my "vote" if my opinions or behaviors have changed. That would be a good way to track growth. I also agree with the comment that said that it would be nice to have more options on polls and quizzes when an answer such as "none of the above" or 'all of the above" might more accurately reflect reality than listed options. I would think that that kind of option might give the "research" more validity and open up new avenues of thought than a set of rigidly defined "preconceptions."

    I agree with KARENBGRATEFUL. It is nice to see how we grow in getting healthy by being able to change our answers not only in the quizzes but our poll answers. What we answered 6 months ago may be entirely different than how we answer now.

I would also like to see it that when we sing in to comment, it takes us back to what we are signing in for, not the comments that are already there. As it stands now, we have to go to look at other blogs/posts and click on the 1 we want.

When I have a Spark Mail from SPARKGUY I always do it before most other things including signing in which on some things we have to do even if we already are.

I love the constant improvements. It also explains why I was having problems posting last night. It would post the same comment 4 times and as yet, there is no way to entirely delete our own extras. They have to stay there.

    Thank you for continually improving the site. I find that when I take a quiz and then months later review my answer, sometimes my feelings have changed yet there is no way to change my answer. Is it possible to make this an option?

Make Every Fitness Minute Count: Set a SparkAmerica Goal for 2009!

Thursday, January 15, 2009



January is the perfect time to revisit your goals, setting both long- and short-term goals for the year. One thing we recommend is checking out SparkAmerica, where you can set a goal to exercise for a certain number of minutes during 2009.

All SparkPeople members can see an ongoing total of their fitness minutes for each week, month and year by visiting the SparkAmerica page. Each time you track your workouts on SparkPeople—on the cardio tracker, strength tracker or QuickTrack—your minutes will automatically count toward these totals.

We recommend that you visit your SparkAmerica page and see if revisit your 2008 fitness minute goal and set a new goal for 2009. Here's how:

  1. Log in to SparkPeople (if you aren't already logged in).
  2. Go to the SparkAmerica page (under the Community tab).
  3. Scroll down the page until you find a red box on the left side titled "My SparkAmerica." Here, you'll see your current totals, as well as your 2008 and/or 2009 fitness minute goals (if you have set them).
  4. To edit your goals for 2009, click "Edit Minute Goals" at the bottom of the red box.
  5. Enter both a monthly and a yearly fitness minute goal. If you're not sure what to enter, 360 minutes per month (or 90 minutes per week) could be a good place to start.
  6. Click "Save Your Changes" and you're all set!


While you're on the SparkAmerica page, take a look around! SparkAmerica is our health and fitness challenge, where we encourage people to take small steps to become more active. One of the best parts of SparkAmerica is seeing the grand total of all the fitness minutes that all of our members have tracked. You can also see which cities and states are the most active on our Leaderboards (on the right side of the page).

    ....so much, that a few weeks ago I had received a blank email from an animation company. I wrote to them stating I received a blank e-page. Yesterday, I received a phone call from a staff member of that company explaining that it was probably a promotion for me to re-subscribe.

I talked with her about online things and asked if she knew of anyone who was overweight. I have been on a weight loss site that would "blow your mind away." She said she knew of someone; someone with whom she works and sits by her; it was her and she wanted to know all about it. I gave her the SP's URL and she brought it up as we were talking. She said, "Wow, this looks great! I am going to check out this site when I get home."

I told her that all my DRs (One is the nephew of the late Art Carney) have given me 3 thumbs up on SP.

It made my heart feel so good for her that she may be able to do something healthy for herself on the best site on the globe.

    Thanks for posting this, Nicole! I'd re-evaluated my goals for this year, but wouldn't have thought to adjust my SparkAmerica goals ... if I hadn't flaked out the last part of '08 I would have exceeded th number! emoticon Oh well, at least I didn't gain back any weight while I was being such a slacker ... LOL

    I set my goal for 30,000 minutes since I was at over 28,000 last year!!! I would be great if we could get more than 120 minutes total for the day since as a long distance runner I can easily exceed 120 minutes a day!!! emoticon
