A journey for a lifetime

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

One of the biggest weight control mistakes I have seen over the years is people starting too fast with a finish line firmly fixed in their sights. Their commitment and eagerness for results takes them off the starting line at top speed. They change their life drastically in commitment to their goal. They dig in, push hard, and keep their eyes on the finish line at all costs, weighing themselves frequently and getting upset when the needle doesn't fall quickly. Unfortunately, they forget one key thing. This is a new routine for the long haul not something drastic for a quick fix. When that reality sets in, they soon realize their pace is unsustainable and begin to slow down and give up in defeat because it was just too much. If they reach the finish line, many of them quickly return to the life they had before the race began because they felt they were missing out. Oh, they would willingly attempt to run the weight loss race again, repeatedly. They may try a different racecourse (diet plan) but they take off in that weight loss race at the same pace and it quickly ends like all the others.

To find success you have to accept one important but simple truth. This journey is for the rest of your life!

So true! It is a permanent lifestyle not a diet! Starting your journey with small steps adds up to big changes!

For the first time in my years of yo-yo dieting, I am doing something different. With SP I started slow and the mind set that I want to make this a forever, lifestyle change. I have to admit, the slow has freaked me out a few times but I choose to trust that the healthy changes I am making will be come habit, real life for me when I reach my goal and beyond. Thanks for the encouragement, it's what I needed today! emoticon

Are You An Apple in a Lollipop World?

Monday, March 04, 2013

Identifying your body shape and learning to love it are two different things.

This is especially true when the world indicates we should be something we don't see when we look in the mirror.

Do you know what your body type is and have you learned to accept and love it?

Keep yourself healthy while visiting the gym this winter

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Since it is cold and flu season it is important to remember that any public place, including your gym can be a breeding ground for germs, dirt and other icky things. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy this winter while working to reach your goals.

Don't assume machines (including Pilates) and communal apparatus (including balls/hand weights/yoga mats) have been cleaned -- do it yourself before you start using them for your workout.

Don't let your bare feet hit the ground at the health club.

Pay attention to where your gym bag lands. Try to always keep your bag off the floor, especially in the bathroom and locker room. Remember that the germs at the gym will come home with you on the bottom of your gym bag so be careful what you do with it when you get home --- best NOT to drop it on the kitchen counter or table when you walk in the door.

Wet, dirty clothes can be a breeding ground for germs! Change your clothes before you leave the gym even if you don't have time to take a shower. Remove the sweaty clothes from your gym bag as soon as you get home and use an anti-bacterial spray inside the bag after you do.

Yes this was why I did not rejoin the nasty gym. I saw folks wiping there faces and then placing their towel on rails. Just nasty. I got a older model treadmil at my house for a lot less than I could ever pay in a store. Now all I need to do is get busy. thanks for fhe info.

7 Wonderful Years

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Hard to believe that seven years ago I started working for SparkPeople as a Healthy Eating Expert and Community Leader at Babyfit.com. Shortly after I began helping teens learn to reach healthy lifestyle goals through SparkTeens.com. As our company continued to grow I was able to become active in the SparkPeople.com community while also blogging at dailySpark.com.

It has been a terrific seven years of helping people live their best lives by helping them set and achieve health and fitness goals. Here's to another seven wonderful years or more!

Blood Type Diets Lack Scientific Backing

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

The idea of eating according to your blood type became popular with the 1996 book "Eat Right 4 Your Type" (Putnam Adult) by Peter D'Adamo, a naturopath physician. The theory is that the genes behind blood type also are behind the expression of other proteins in our body, which relate to how we digest foods.

Most dietitians/nutritionists do not subscribe to eating by blood type because it is not backed by hard scientific data, said Marjorie Nolan, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

The evidence supporting the blood-type diet is based largely on anecdotes and research showing links between blood type and certain illnesses (for example, Type O's are more likely to have stomach ulcers). There have been no peer-reviewed studies published showing that different blood types perform better on certain foods.

I must say I did sort of nut into this a couple years back. I noticed when I ordreed the book All there were promoting was their products and snack and shakes. Now it did have interesting on how certain foods can affect the blood example they said that my hubbie would be better going meatless. Said he had sluggish blood. he does have gout now and I ask him did he get sleepy after consuming high amounts of meal and he said yes. They suggested foods to stay from and netruel food and ok foods and drinks. For me they suggested to stay away from wheat products and chicken, tomatoes and corn probably more but I eat more or less as I should. It is very challenging when you have a fish allergy and can not eat fish, I can get away with some tuna at times. oysters, shrimp, crab meat and I am cautious and I am allergic to mushroom and a host of other foods. Not an easy road travelled. But I do push on. thanks .

My problem with this article is that the fact checker was lazy and didn't go back far enough...and never bothered to mention other countries. But the Chicago Tribune has never been the most reliable source of info. Its days as a reputable news were waning two decades ago when I was a journalism student.

I'm not saying the article is wrong (I have no opinion one way or another when it comes to the blood type diet), but it's not complete, and it does get two major facts wrong:

The blood type diet has roots in Japan, NOT here in the U.S. The article fails to mention this and cites a 1995 U.S. diet book as its roots, never even bothering to mention other countries.

In Japan asking someone's blood type is a common practice it's used to determine a variety of things, including prescribing ones' diet.

If the writer of the article doesn't know this, or hasn't bothered to mention it, or didn't find it in their research, the rest of the info in the article can't be trusted either.
