YAY! So excited about hitting the 220s this week - even though I largely have the "Gastrointestinal-Evil-Death-Flu" to thank for it. Spent most of last week spending quality time with the porcelein in my house. LOL - I can't recommend this form of weight loss! I will be happy for my usual 2lbs a week :) No pics this week - just didn't get out of the house much - promise something next week. As always, thanks to all of my Spark Buddies for the support & love this week.

So for my weigh in Monday I actually used my Saturday weight, but hadn't done the measuring yet. The reason? I have had a stomach flu for the past few days. This is the first time I have been sick since beginning this journey 18 weeks ago, and while I am sure my weight is down more, it is just water losses so I am staying away from the scale until next week. It won't make me feel any better to see it going down and then back up again! I am proud of the fact that despite feeling ill I managed to do some exercise each day, albeitedly half-hearted. Before I got sick I was having a great week, hiking several days and really enjoying time outside. Picture below is from hiking on Saturday, and a reflection of how I am hoping to feel by tomorrow again.
Just a walk in the woods
Me after hiking along a gas pipeline for hours, up and down hills, through farms, really a beautiful day for late November.

So starting this journey in July was pretty easy for me. I had more time off this summer and it was gorgeous outside! Since I enjoy hiking and biking anyway, it was not that much harder to do it more often and add some other exercise as well. I started watching what I was eating and suddenly the pounds were falling away.
As fall approached I became more and more anxious. I grew up in Northern Wisconin and have always HATED the cold. Last winter I spent less than 5 minutes a day outside (usually running from the car into work or into the house). I looked longingly outside and hoped spring would come faster. So as the weather got cooler, I became anxious -what if I stopped all of my outside activities and lost my focus.
Then, it occurred to me - I choose who to I want to be. If I want to go outside I just need to get prepared. I bought a new parka, snowpants, snow snoes, winter hiking boots, long underwear, warm hats and mittens -everything I could think of that would make going outside in the cold more enticing. I told everyone how much I was looking forward to winter and the snow. And an odd thing happened - I actually started looking forward to winter. Today was the first day of snow so my husband and I bundled up and headed to a local state park to do some hiking. Yes, it was cold at first. But once I got accustomed to it, I realized how beautiful it was outside and just enjoyed the hike.
We CAN change ourselves - inside and out!

Since I have to work all Thanksgiving weekend, my husband and I decided to have a little mini-holiday in NYC this week. We lived there for 7 years in our 20s, and I still miss it sometimes, although I would never give up living in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia now. Our main goals for the 3 days were to walk everywhere, see friends and enjoy the excitement of the city.
We lucked out on getting a "workout room" in the hotel that we staying at. Has anyone ever heard of that before? It was a regular hotel room at the Westin, but in addition to comfy beds it had a spin cycle, spinning DVDs, yoga mat, free weights, medicine ball, stability ball and health magazines...Isn't that great! Yes, I used them. It was my first time using a spin cycle but I managed to get quite a sweat up working out along with the video.
And then there was the walking! 29 miles of walking in 3 days. We walked everywhere! To heck with cabs and subways, we decided that there wasn't anywhere in Manhattan that we couldn't walk to. What a great way to see the city and see how different neighborhoods have changed since we lived there 12 years ago. Especially enjoyed walking through Central park on a crisp Autumn day.
The food was also fantastic. Went to a wonderful Ethiopian restaurant in midtown and had a perfect meal with spiced tea. When we were in the Village we stopped in a coffee bar that we used to go to and shared a canoli, something that we really enjoyed when we lived there.
The rest of the time we spent seeing friends, shopping and one night out at a off-Broadway musical (Avenue Q). All in all, a fantastic 3 day weekend!

Jumping up and down excited!
I worked so hard the past two weeks to try to get to the 50 lb marker and today passed it! I think the combination of positive attitude, healthy food choices and daily exercise continues to help me stay on track. Would like to get another 10 lbs off before the end of the year which I think is an achievable goal. This week for Thanksgiving I am grateful to all of you who read my blog, give me goodies, and cheer me on. It makes all of the difference! Love you!
