Finally June 1st - weigh in and goals moving forward!

After a reboot on May 16th I promised myself I was going to work my plan, without a scale until June 1st. This from a girl who normally would happily get on the scale 2-3x per day. It was hard for the first few days but then it was actually a bit of a relief to not worry about the scale.

So how did I do over those 16 days...
I tracked every calorie (went over my range twice, each time only by less than 300 calories.
I exercised every day - total time 1185 minutes or 19 hours and 45 minutes
I worked on positive thoughts and mentally rewarded myself for effort, not numbers on the scale
It felt good

So, I am glad I did it that way. It was a good way for me to reboot my mind, and my body. In fact, I like it so much I am going to do the same thing for the next 2 weeks...

It is still nice to see some movement on the scale though
So here is my weight and measurements as of today
Please note, these are my initial "reboot" measurements - I did not mentally feel up to measurements on May 16th so I only weighed in that day...


Weight 229.8 initially, now 223.8 6 lb. loss
Neck: 13.5
Arm: 15.5
Chest: 43
Waist: 34
Hips: 49.5
Thigh: 28
BMI: 37.3


Goals from now until June 15th:
1. Log all calories
2. Exercise every day, at least 45 minutes
3. Practice positivity
4. Log into spark and allow success of others to motivate me
5. Stay off scale
6. Think actively about ways to manage stress that don't involve food
7. Love and value myself where I am now

That's all for now
Amazingly, I think that is enough!

I think this is an excellent plan. First, it keeps you off the roller coaster ride AKA as the scale and, second, it rewards you for all of your hard work!

Gritching

lol - yup it means exactly what you think it means...

The docs I work with refer to occasional sessions of grumpy _itching as gritching
From the verb: To gritch
Not really, but it is amusing, right?

So here is my gritching for the week:
- No days off, worked straight through Memorial weekend
- Dog is sick and in "doggy hospital"
- I have a 48 spot allergy patch test on my back...I am on hour 36 and ALL I can think about is ITCHING
How that for something' to Gritch about??

    Yikes! I would definitely be "gritching" too! Your term kind of reminds me of something my ex-boyfriend used to say. Whenever I'd accuse him of whining, he'd say it was "manly griping".

    Bummer. My wife had that allergy test but they did it on her forearm. It blew up in seconds. The doctor was so amazed he called the other doctors in to look at it. And they said they never seen anything like it before. All she wanted to was scratch. But at least you can find out what you are allergic too.

Full Length pics (in Cycling gear no less!)

There I am in all my cycling gear after melting in the sun on a 25 mile ride in 90 degree heat. I felt so proud of myself today, I thought maybe I would post some full length pics

This is actually really hard for me to do...
I never allow myself to look in full length mirrors and rarely allow full length pics to be taken. But, here it is - because I am trying to learn to love all of me...

It's odd how much a little phrase like "thunder thighs" can hurt when you are only in middle school, but it has stuck with me my whole life

I have spent my entire life ashamed of how my legs look

It is ridiculous, and I have had enough
My legs are strong, and they might not look pretty but they are part of me
These legs biked over 1,000 foot elevation change today in crazy hot & humid weather
I will be happy when they are smaller and more toned, but I will NOT be ashamed of them anymore!

I hope all of you accept yourselves as well, even your less than perfect parts
Don't let anyone tell you you aren't good enough

    Love the photos! I have had what my family calls Hartman(mom's family name) thighs my whole life~but those thighs help me kick butt on my bike and one day they will look tone and fit!

    I think you look great! But I also understand what you mean.. its hard for me to look at full length pictures of myself too because what I see in my head doesn't always match how I feel..sometimes I feel thin and sleek - then see pics and think, OMG I am so thick through this bodypart or that one... and other times I feel fat and the pic shows me as better than my mind's eye does.

I'm trying to learn to accept that this is my body...and it can do things now that it could never do before... athletic things even! I never thought of myself as an athlete before spark...

    Excellent blog - excellent advice.

We have to learn to accept ourselves as we are - let go of those memories that haunt us from our past. Kids can be mean - they don`t even realize it at the time. I wonder how many of those kids now regret something they said to others because they are still haunted by something somebody else said about them?

Great ride today - I could never do that phsically and I'm always impressed when I hear how others have been able to achieve their goals.

You should be proud of yourself - you deserve it!

Contemplating the scale...or the lack of it

Something happened today that shocked me - I lost weight without the scale!

How is this possible you ask?

Lol, when I decided to see if I could go 14 days without a scale I thought about how hard it would be to go 2 weeks without knowing if I was making progress. I thought about how exciting it would be to see a lower number on June 1st.

Then a funny thing happened today on day 7. I felt smaller when I got up and stretched this morning. I got dressed - yup, pants seems a little baggy and then I looked in the mirror and I actually could see change. What? After only 1 week - yup, after only 7 days.

I am smaller and I didn't need a scale to tell me that
As a traditionally scale-obsessed woman I don't think in 25 years of dieting it ever occurred to me that I didn't NEED a scale. Despite measuring and feeling good about clothes over the years I have always relied on the scale to tell me how I measure up...whether or not I have succeeded.

Would it be total anarchy to not weigh in for a while?
Something I need to think about.

  I'll take emoticon over emoticon anyday. I know it can be scary, but there is a freedom that comes with less frequent visits with the scale. No, not to eat more and exercise less than you know you should, but knowing you are in charge and responsible for how you take care of yourself.

So be good to yourself, you deserve it.

    This is wonderful!
I still weigh myself on a regular basis but quite honestly my true gauge of myself is how my clothes look on me. Am I still able to button my pants without holding my stomach in? Does my shirt feel baggy? As long as I pass the "look" test I feel that I am doing well.
I don't think that it would be total anarchy to not weight yourself for awhile. Stick to the plan, conduct visual reviews of yourself, and keep moving!

    Just like age, it's just a number. If you don't need to know it. Then it doesn't matter. Enjoy life and the fitting of smaller clothes and the nice comments you receive along the way to tell you how healthy you are getting instead of the number.

    For sure the signs you mention are definite indicators of your progress - but for me the scale is how I keep things from sliding too far 'out of control' at times. So for now - it's ok to stay away, but I like to see my week to week progress on paper so I can see patterns. I still hop on it every morning - can't help myself lol ... tried hiding it once but it drove me nuts - it's like brushing my teeth - part of my morning routine.

    Great job!

I think I remember reading back somewhere a long time ago that giving up the scale FOREVER is not a good way to go - it's too easy to not notice five pounds creep on.. and then five more... and then five more. If I remember right, the article said like once or twice a month is a good way to go, especially once you've hit maintenance weight. Since I'm still working on losing weight, I go with once a week (and I take measurements - those are important!). Maybe once or twice a month would work well for you, too? :)

    I am still super jealous of your resolve to stay off the scale. I tried like two years ago to only weigh myself on "official" weigh-in days, meaning my Monday weigh-ins and my one monthly weigh-in and I think I made it 5 days. I'd be motivated to try it again, because of your blog posts, if only I hadn't JUST ordered a new scale that's arriving Thursday!

    That is very encouraging and exciting! I've given up the scale several times and I always gain:-( I'd love to some day be free from obsessing over the scale! But I don't think that will happen for me.

Adventures in Cycling

Sometimes I think I live in the most beautiful place in the world...especially when I am on a bike
Decided to challenge myself with a new ride into the hills yesterday. I have done parts of this ride before, but never the entire thing. I wasn't sure I even could do the entire ride. I had to stop and walk a few times, but I made it! Below are some pics from the ride - hope you enjoy!

    Looks like a great ride. Is there much vehicle traffic? That's where my downfall began back in '99. I was hit by a car on my way to work. So I rarely go riding anymore. I need to. I loved it. I went out once last year. On streets, I was so nervous. We have plenty of trails here though and I need to get on them. Thanks for sharing the pics.

    Had to leave at the GU gel, I just ran my first half marathon today and hadn't heard of or tried it before getting ready for this. I tried Vanilla and Peanut Butter. Thankfully Vanilla was one of about 5 flavors they had at mile 9:)
