Take a walk with me in pictures

Thursday, September 15, 2011

I've decided to take you with me on my afternoon walk....I work in downtown Spokane in a building that is right next to Riverfront park. So on some days I take a walk through the park for my half hour lunch break. So today come with me!
Out the front door and we see the Bloomsday runners. Bloomsday is one of the biggest roadraces in the country. It's 7.5 miles and used to end right here where the statues are.

This is our fairly new water fountain. In the summer it becomes a splashpad for the kiddies.

Next we come to the carousel. In the summer time you can hear the music it plays all over the park. I haven't ridden it in a few years but it always makes you feel like a kid again when you do.

Next we have one of my favorite things in the park...the garbage eating goat!! If you have - or find - a smallish piece of garbage you go up to him press a button and he sucks up the garbage! He's awesome! I think he's left over from Expo 74 because I have fond memories of him from long ago!

Around the corner from my buddy the goat, we come to the big red wagon. In the summer time you will find scores of munchkins climbing up and sliding down the wagon. It's also a tourist magnet for pictures there and on the big ABC blocks nearby. (not to mention townies like me who like doggie photo ops there!)

This is an old pic of my now deceased dog Gus on the blocks right by the wagon.

Lot's of geese hang out there too.

Now we cross the bridge...

And come to the Pavillion. The pavillion is another famous thing in spokane. During expo 74 it was cover in white canvas so it looked like a ginormous Teepee. In the winter time there is a skating rink underneath, and in the summer kiddie rides and sometimes miniature golf.

This is the lovely Spokane River that runs through the park. You can crisscross it several times over bridges throughout the park. Some, like the ones in this photo, are creepy small ones that are barely 2 person wide and sway in the wind! I avoid them whenever possible!

And lastly, just before I get back to my building we have the gondolas. Also a remnant from expo 74 and also with a high creep factor, these gondolas go out over the falls and then turn around and come back to the park. You can just see them against the green background.

And there you have it! Thank you for joining me on my walk through the park!

Pics from the Portland trip

Monday, August 29, 2011

I don't have the ability to load pics directly onto my computer. Which means I have to take the memory card to the store and use one of those machines to make a disc and then bring it to work. That's my excuse for not having my July trip pics til now. So here we go...I was driving from Spokane to Portland OR, which is just under a 6 hour drive for a really big dog show. The first part is boring but once you get past the Pasco/Kennewick area it starts to get really pretty. You spend the almost the whole last half of the trip driving along the columbia. I took this first picture from a rest stop along there:

When we got to Portland we met with Eliot's breeder (Heather) who said she was pleased with the way he had grown up. And she also said she could see that he really loved me. Which almost made me cry - what can I say?! I'm a big sap!
Then we checked into our hotel for the night. In the morning was grooming and then the drive to the expo center (bless the person who invented the GPS!!) We went in the ring twice, however, did not win anything. It was a good experience though and we had fun watching all the other dogs. Eliot spent the time in my lap napping. I don't have any pics of us in the ring because I didn't have anyone to take pictures for us, but here are a couple from the show:

In the first one, the 4th dog from the front of the line (with the lady in the black & white dress) is Eliot's 1/2 brother Tristan)

In this one the 3rd dog back (with the gentleman in the suit) is Zelda, the #1 springer spaniel in the nation and the first dog in line is the one that won that day, his name is Finn:

And now some various closeups:

Hope you enjoyed the show!

Upside Down(side)

Monday, August 15, 2011

What a weekend! Iím going to start with Sunday because it was the worst day of the weekend. That way I can end my blog on a good note instead of what Sunday was Ė oy. What can you say about a dog fight. I have two Australian shepherds that occasionally do not like each other and get into a knock down-drag out fight. Nothing Iíve tried breaks them up so I wade in, grab each by the collar and literally try and pull them apart. (this usually takes a few minutes) By the time Iím done thereís blood everywhere, Iíve been accidently bit on the hand and my tummy is in knots. It is not a fun experience. Of course the downside is obvious and thereís not too much upsideÖbut no one needed a vet (all the blood was from superficial wounds, including mine) and everyone seemed happy and back to themselves this morning. Since this is not first time this has happened Iím working out how to keep them apart. No more outside time together. Which is not easy when you have a little house and a little yard, but it must be done. Okay that was the bad weekend day Ė now on to the good!
Friday I took my car in to have the brakes done. While they were working on the car, I decided to do some geocaching! There are ups and downs to caching in the city. The downsÖtraffic and traffic noise Ė no peaceful walks in the forest! And another downÖyou feel very conspicuous when you are poking around in front of someoneís car looking for a cache just off a busy street. I kept wondering when someone was going to ask me what the heck I thought I was doing!! The upsides of city caching? There are lotís of caches within walking distance pretty much no matter where you are, and the biggie?.....if you forget to bring water you can swing into the local 7-11! Boy was that a lifesaver! But a great walk (including a climb up to a water tower for a cache) and back to my newly brake happy car!
Saturday I went hiking with friends over at Cougar Bay in north Idaho. Itís at the western end of Lake Coeur DíAlene. The downsideÖthe gazillion mosquitos on a mission to eat us alive! By the time we were done we looked like we had some dreaded disease! I am COVERED in mosquito bites (and did I mention itchy?!) Oh yeah Ė and one of my hiking partners got stung by a beeÖon the hiney! She was not a happy camper about that! The upsidesÖthere are so many! It was a beautiful day, the hike was shady so I didnít get too hot, the dogs all had a great time, the hike was the perfect difficulty level for me Ė not to hard, not to easy and it was only a 30 minute drive from my house! Woohoo! Canít wait to go back thereÖ.with bugspray!

I hate mosquitoes. Dog fights terrify me my dogs have all had sociability training LOL!There is a dog down the street that is not friendly and the man lets him roam I have phoned animal control on him three times last time he got a 250 dollar fine so hopefully we won't have to worry about my sweethearts being harrassed by his bully.

I feel your pain about the dog fights . . . my two boys (12 and 3) dislike each other strongly, and that results in fights from time to time. Last time they fought I ended up getting bit on the hand. Boy was I mad at them!

Sounds like your hike was awesome, skeeters notwithstanding. I sure hope the itchiness goes away soon! Try a bath in Aveeno Medicated bath soak. It's amazing.

The Trip, the Goal, & the List

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

One of the items on my list of long term goals, is to be able to run around the show ring with Eliot (my springer spaniel). I guess I should say something like ďrun better and/or fasterĒ, because I currently do run around with himÖ.but I donít think I run fast enough and it feels like a struggle when I do it. Plus I have guilt that I hold up the people behind me.
So it was my goal to lose 50 lbs by my Portland trip this weekend. This trip is the Springer Spaniel specialty show, where there will by only Springers instead of all kinds of dogs. It will be the biggest show Iíve ever been to with probably 60-70 springers attending, and Iíve been planning this trip all year.
Well, unfortunately, I didnít make my goal and Iím fighting the disappointment. So I decided to list all the good changes in my life so I could be positive! So here are my Woohoos!

Trip woohoos: emoticon

a. I get to go on a fun road trip with Eliot
b. I get to see lotís and lotís of springers and take lotís of pictures
c. I get to see Eliotís breeder and show her what a wonderful boy he has turned into, and also see Eliotís sister, Juliet, and his brother, Erik.
d. I get almost a week off from work

Lifestyle woohoos: emoticon

a. I lost 25lbs (Yay!)
b. I discovered Sparkpeople and spark friends to keep me interested in and motivated for a new healthy lifestyle
c. Iíve stuck with my new eating plan longer than any other Iíve ever tried in my lifeÖ.I think this is the one!! (Go Paleo!)
d. Iíve been gradually upping my exercising.

When I read over these two lists, itís kind of hard to feel down. And now itís time to set a new weight goalÖhonestly, I donít know what itís going to be. I want it to be realistic and I want it to have some meaning like this last one did. I want to have a specific event to shoot for, so itís going to require some more thought.
So hereís hoping the trip goes well, Iím getting nervous and excited all at once! One thing is for sure though Ė Iíll miss sparking and all my spark buddies when Iím away from my computer for 5 days!

And now here is the little man and a picture that makes me laugh -

There's a slowest loser Spark Team. The leader's goal was to lose a half pound a week.
Someone once told me that if it took me three years to put on the weight, that taking three years to lose it was reasonable.

GOOD JOB!!!

Exercise & Shawshank

Monday, July 11, 2011

So on the recommendation of my boss, who also lent me the movie, I watched Shawshank Redemption last weekend....wow, depressing much?! He said it was his all time favorite movie and I remember it was a big deal when it first came out. Guess I'm not really a big fan of that genre. I like the ending...yep, that's pretty much it.
On the subject of exercise, I walked the stairs twice at lunch time . Its a 7 floor building and the first time I made it to the 4th floor before I had to stop and catch my breath. That's the furthest yet! Yay! Second time...not quite so far, but I'm going to focus on the happy right now! Plus, I plan to go for a walk during my late break. I work next to a lovely park on the Spokane river where I can do about a 1.5 mile loop with my alotted time. I brought my camera with me today so I can take some pictures and share the beautiful Riverfront Park with my spark buddies! And lastly, upcoming dog show weekend! Saturday only in Coeur D'Alene. Should be fun!

7 floors! That's a lot of steps. Between that & the walks at the park - your getting good fitness time in.
