This year, I'm off insulin this year, did a 5k with my walker, and exceeded the goal weight I set for myself. Why? EXERCISE. I worked out more this year than I have in a long time. I trained by walking smaller and setting higher personal goals for over a year. I used recumbent (seated) machines to build cardio and core, like the NuStep Cross trainer and the Octane Elliptical. I used my arm bike when I felt too ill to do a harder workout.

Start small and dream big!

I got in 40 full minutes so far -- hope to do some yoga in a little bit, too. ABSOLUTELY I ADORE it when people don't need meds because of eating right, managing stress and getting physically active more!! My family has been generally "let food be your medicine" for some time now, and a lot of modern medicine and its effects literally scares me! emoticon emoticon

Today's Fitness
I did 54 minutes of fitness today.

Today's Highlights
Today's highlight was feeling stronger than I have in a long time – love that feeling that starts to kick in around 3 months of being really consistent!

Member Highlight

I love this member's description of the SP community in her blog:

In the past - I'd have gladly had a fat and carb fest with the Alfredo pasta and garlic bread - and I must admit I was totally uninspired by the idea of a boring little dry salad for dinner. :(

Instead, tonight I thought about my personal goals and I thought about each of You...

You are my inspiration: those who have succeeded (and started where I am now), those who are just starting to figure out if Spark has something here that could help them, and those of you like me who are still finding our way down this newest path we are choosing for the rest of our lives and are grateful to have found a supportive community like Spark with people who can laugh, cry, but most of all problem solve with us. You may not even realize that you inspired me when I read one of your blogs where you were voicing a challenge I too face(d), or I read your words of inspiration to someone else and I was moved by your level of commitment / compassion, or perhaps I've tried one of your recipes - even if I modified it first...

All I need is 10 minutes....all I need is 10 minutes...all I need is 10 minutes. It must be instilled in my head. I am just starting after being in a wheel chair, walker, cane and now walking. I am a type 2 diabetic and need the exercise but have become very much a couch potato. At times it is quite painful to walk--diabetic neuropathy. Please give me encouragement to keep going, even if it is only 10 minutes a day. Hugs to everyone out there--we all need them! emoticon

I have just recently started posting a new picture to my Spark page daily to mark my 'workout every day streak' that I am on. The sign you used to post on your office door gave me the inspiration. So since my Spark page is like my office door here at Spark, I am changing it daily and noting which day I am on.

Chris, I came back to Sparks because I was having trouble controlling my new maintenance. Also I wanted to see what fitness I could achieve. I set up a new goal for myself by my b-day (April) that I will be able to be RID of the chair. I only use it in the house; and my walker everywhere else. Yesterday, (the 12th) I adapted an exercise in Silver Sneakers. Teaching me how to balance on two feet without hanging on AND moving my arms. This I will practice. I take the class back to back MWF for a total of 90 mins a day. AND I can do 10 mins on the NuStep before class. I WILL get there. Thanks to your encouragement. WOOOHOOO!

I've been on SP for awhile now, but have only been doing it half heartedly, so I think this will be the extra push I need to give it my all this time! I've also experienced a lot of life changes recently: moving across country, moving again, finding a job only to have it not work out, and looking for employment again, all while graduating from grad school, so it's been a transition. I'm hoping that by adding some consistency to my life, everything else will eventually work out! After all, in order to do your best, you have to take care of yourself first! emoticon

More than 2000 rounds with the hoop that is not yet one week old. Was tired and close to death when arriving home. Ate dinner, did strength this morning, dressed down and went to bed, and found the computer to tap in food. Thought about this guy that might be here and ask if any did their 10 mins. Decided to postphone the food tracking and just to go into the livingroom and do those 10 mins to be able to say "....´course I did" if he was in here asking.
Dropped the hoop at around 95 rounds....... thought "that was damn close to a 100" - "just once more". Made it in the third try and passed 100, thought "no reason to stop the hoop by myself" ............ wondered when it passed 200 if it ever would stop............ accumulated up to a 1000 with only a few drops.

Thought "That was anyway something".
Thought "wonder if I can do it again?". Decided to aim for 300 ........ anyway - I think you get the picture. more than 2000 swings later it struck me that somebody must have sneaked in and fast forwarded the watches in the house ..... 46 minutes. Fortunately no food in the oven, THIS TIME - I learn . emoticon

Fantastic day!! Good news on the pregnancy too (not yours:)!!

I am in the middle of getting us into the next stage of our lives. We will both be in retirement by Mon. and we are heading south. I didn't know there was sooooo much to deal with and the time involved. Lots of calling, internet set ups, health insurance, COBRA, organizing important papers for the family to be aware of, etc, etc. I am not going to worry about any of that tomorrow as it is my DH's office retirement party and there will be surprises for him. Family invited. Should be fun!!

Exercise, running the stairs for laundry and getting to the car a few times. A good 10 mins. Finger exercises probably 120 mins. of continuous work outs. Jaw exercises about 30 mins. Staving off the headaches, timeless.

Oh yes, forgot to eat after breakfast. Enjoy to day tomorrow!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

December 7: Day 94 of the 10+ Minute Fitness Challenge

Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Today's Fitness
I did 25 minutes of fitness today. I'm dedicating those fitness minutes to our member Sunny mentioned in the post below -- go Sunny!

Today's Highlights
Feeling good today! Today's highlight was tossing football with my 5 year old. For the first time, he threw really good spirals that were like bullets (ok, maybe not bullets, he's not Peyton Manning yet, but fast for him :)). I didn't count this as fitness minutes, but it was still the day highlight.

Member Highlight

Today's member highlight is a long story that involves fitness minutes. It's a story of SparkFriends rooting each other on even in the face of serious injury (fortunately it sounds like there will be a full recovery). I got this comment below on my SparkPage last night:
LESLIESENIOR
12/6/2011 7:23:36 PM

Good Evening Chris,
It sounds like you have been very busy (and tired) this past few days but have inspired us all to "get it done" anyway!!! Woo Hoo to that!!!

I wanted to let you know about one of our Sparkers who has been such a supportive and encouraging friend to many of us. Her name is Sunny (RC2Cattle). She had a very frightening accident at her ranch in Texas after Thanksgiving. Many of us were worried when we didn't hear from her for several weeks. Her daughter figured out how to notify us on her Spark page. She is a cattle rancher and was feeding the bulls with her dog in toe, when one of the bulls and her dog went after each other. Long story short, she tried to rescue her dog and was beaten up and buried by the bull. Her dog saved her life. She was hospitalized with multiple broken bones and contusions.
The Great Spark news is that a Sparker named Angelabauer had the idea today for her friends to dedicate one or some of our workouts each week to Sunny. A brilliant idea, don't you think? So here we are as Sparkers supporting her recovery by honoring our own health. She will love that.
I thought that you might like this almost tragic, but uplifting story.
Thank you, again, for all you have done to connect the world in health and well being. You have truly paid it forward and people like Sunny are the beneficiary. We are all benefiting by your benevolence.
Thank you and Peace,

Leslie

Then, this is the story posted on RC2Cattle's page by her daughter

News about Sunny (RC2CATTLE)

I hope I am doing this right and that I have found the right place. My name is Amy and Sunny (RC2CATTLE) is my mother. Saturday, November 26, Momma went alone with Emmitt her dog to the bull pens to take care of feeding the bulls while Daddy was haying the cows. Something happened that Emmitt didn't like and he got between two of the bulls that were butting heads. That set off one of the bulls who got Emmitt down and in an effort to try and save her dog, Momma jumped right in the middle of it.

One of the bulls got her down and spent we don't know how long trying to bury her in the pen. In the end, it was Emmitt who probably saved her life. When Daddy found her, Emmitt was bleeding and injured pretty bad, but he was standing guard over her keeping the bulls away. It was clear which bull had done the damage because his nose was ripped to shreds.

She spent a week in the hospital and it was a very scary situation, but we are so grateful we have been told she will fully recover. She has a broken leg, some broken ribs, a slight concussion, a broken right wrist and several broken fingers. There were some internal injuries but we have been told there was bruising but no ruptures or permanent damage of any major organ. And, as you would expect, she is black and blue all over.

She is home now, but it will likely be several weeks before she can do anything that requires the use of her computer. She asked me to post this note so anyone who might be wondering where she was would know what happened. I am going to try and post this in the few places she told me about, but I have no idea how to reach anyone else she might know here.

For those of you who are believers, please pray for her, and for Daddy. He, as we all expected, won't leave her side.

She won't be able to respond any time soon, but for those of you who would like to send her a note, you can send it to her email at gradyssunshine@yahoo.com. I will read the notes to her.

Thank you.

******
Here's a link to her page if you'd like to send her best wishes or dedicate your fitness minutes to her!

December 6: Day 93 of the 10+ Minute Fitness Challenge

Tuesday, December 06, 2011

Today's Fitness
I did 10 minutes of fitness today.

Today's Highlights
Busy day so only got 10 minutes today – but that's the point of this plan – that this is fine sometimes!

Member Highlight

I loved this post today – shows the value of friendly competition to turn into a transformation!

Title: I WILL make it!!!!!

Message: ok so I joined a weight loss group at work on Sept 1st and it ends
Dec 31st. my original goal was to simply win and collect my winnings
($25/person buy-in X 6 ppl). but since I started, this has become so much
more different than I expected. it has actually settled in that I could be
successful at this, so I changed my goal to 50 pounds by the end of the
challange. the first 10 pounds went fast. then 20 came around. then when I
wasn''t looking here comes 30. it was harder to find, but eventually 40
pounds came (and went). I''m currently at 41 pounds lost. I just couldn''t
imagine how great I could possibly feel and I couldn''t wait for the next
day nevermind the next pound. I now have even newer goals. I started
training for my first 5K which I plan on doing next July for my nieces
birthday. I have horrible knees that I''ve had 3 surgeries on and want to
take my training at an easy pace and not reinjure myself and I need to make
sure I''m fit enough to finish it.

I now know I can do this now and I WILL make it!!!!! emoticon

Love the member highlight! it must make all you have done at spark worthwhile!
I did my 10 minutes of exercise before I got up, mostly physio and yoga that I do every day with a little strength training to get me going. Will do more exercise later including walking.
Highlight of my day was that is was raining when I got up and the sun came out. So its a bit warmer today, but windy! Took a look at your breakfast club on facebook too! Is it an official challenge? If so, where do we enter?
Hope you have a lovely day, even though you are busy!
Ellen in UK!

Just wanted to mention, I did a santa race. We all dressed up as santa and walked or ran a 5k to raise money for the ymca. Talk about fun. Everyone looked exactly the same! it was a great time and a great way to get in some fitness!

10th day of the 10-minute streak for me. I just RE-started my sparked journey. Taking it slowly this time around. Fast break day 1. Besides the 10-minute exercising, I am on day 1 with journaling and eating some kind of fresh produce. YAY!!!

I had a rough day- woke up late and very tired and cranky (some days it is just like that!)- but when I got home from work I put my coat and scarf on and went on a walk- just 10 min. but I felt so good that I did it- I kept my streak going!

It's a great feeling! emoticon

I got 20 minutes in today -- which for me is good but I always always at least try for the 10 - that is so doable! So I love it when I go over!! Feels like an accomplishment!
