October 29: Day 55 of the 10+ Minute Fitness Challenge

Saturday, October 29, 2011

Today's Fitness
I did 40 minutes of fitness today.

Today's Highlights
Today's highlight was doing exercise bike for 30 minutes while reading Harry Potter. This is the first time I've done 30 minutes on the bike since getting over my bad cold so it was great!

I got home from work today I went straight Sparkpeople.com, clicked on the
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE tab, clicked on Lifestyle Centers, and lastly clicked on
Maintaining Your New Weight. Who could ask for anything more?! Guidance and
support at our fingertips 24/7!! Awesome! This website is simply the best
thing that has ever happened to me for weight control, bar none.

I know maintenance is a whole new ballgame, but I believe my devotion to
Sparkpeople has actually caused new pathways in my brain! Someone should do
a study, no?

I want to run a 5 k, but everytime I get going this darn cyst in my right foot starts growing. I had surgery last march, and its come back 4 times already. But I've popped the last 3. And boy did that hurt.
I can feel the cyst where it is and its tenticles going through out my foot. Wish I never had this problem...I want the 5 k badly. I will get to it.

Here is the description:
Greet the day and the universe with this class each morning! You will gently encourage circulation in the muscles and awareness in your mind. This warm yoga class combines flowing asanas, breathing practice and meditation to create mind-body-spirit balance that will leave you feeling great all day long! Room temperature will be 80 - 85 degrees.

This is my first day on the program. I need to lose alot of weight but have a hard time with excercise as I am in a wheelchair and can't depend on my legs much. I'm wondering if just the motion from moving my arms and maybe twisting at the waist will help to burn calories and how long I should do it to make it worthwhile. emoticon

Since starting this venture almost 6 weeks ago, I have been able to get at least 10 minutes of exercise virtually every day during that time. I amazed many people this week at my commitment as I was on a work trip with several co-workers. After going out in the evening for dinner and getting back to the hotel late, between 11:00 and 11:45, I went to the fitness center to work out for at least 35-45 minutes etch night. Tonight I did 5K on the treadmill for the first time and did it in 33 minutes, I was hoping for 32, hopefully sometime this next week. Walking, biking, walking/jogging are now such a normal part of the day, I know I can't get by a day without it. emoticon

I ran a 5K with my 11-year old son today. It's been seven months since I last attempted to run/walk a 5K. Today, I finished in 40:27, shaving 13:27 off my time from March. My son ran the entire 5K, his very first one ever, and came in second of all the boys 14-and-under with a time of 26:42. He got a medal and everything. My whole family was out to watch us. It was awesome.

Today's Fitness
I did 20 minutes of fitness today.

Today's Highlights
Today was a pretty quiet day. I guess my fitness highlight today was a short practical fitness moment where I was late for a meeting so sprinted from the car to the restaurant and then did my SparkPeople stress ball during the meeting (didn't count these towards my minutes, but still fun :)).

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

October 27: Day 53 of the 10+ Minute Fitness Challenge

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Today's Fitness
I did 25 minutes of fitness today.

Today's Highlights
Today's highlight was just getting outside after our regular quarterly SparkPeople Board meeting. Board meetings are somewhat stressful anytime when you are the Chairman of the Board and part of the management team because you have to put together a bunch of information and be on your toes presenting the information and answering questions. After the meeting finished I headed outside for some mini-trampoline and stretching. One fun part of the meeting today was discussing a super-secret project we're working on. I can't wait to launch this one in a few months or so! (Sorry to tease about this, but I've learned that I can't share competitively sensitive information. We did that at my first company and eBay watched us and said they tried to implement any of our good ideas on their site before we were able to launch them on our site. At least I have a great story about that now since they ended up buying us :)).

Here's a fun SparkMail I received today that the member said I could share on my blog love hearing that her doctor knew about SparkPeople!

To: SPARKGUY
From: MICHELE142
Date: 10/26/2011 - 11:40 AM
Subject: THANKS FOR THE DIABETES MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Message: I would like to thank you and all the Staff for putting together The Spark, both the book and Website.
I came aboard Spark in March of this year, mainly because I was discouraged with my endocrinologist after six years. I went talking with my Primary physician, and got better support, questions and information of Spark. as she had heard of the website.

Prior to going back to her for Diabetes I was on the same two Insulins and 6 - 7 shots a day. I was determined this was going to change as I felt I was getting to much Insulin, knowing the body's Demands change with weight loss and activity of any kind. Tuesday I went for my second follow-up visit for Diabetes with her. Much to my surprise she told me she had a reward for me as well as a challenge.

From my lad. reports and weight loss she was happy with the work I was doing with Spark She had just read the article on Nicole Nichols in a previous News Paper. She and her family showed interest in Spark. So we talked for a while about the website and what was available.
I think I got her hooked !

My reward: no more seven shots a day or 2 Insulins day. Now just I type of Insulin and 2 shots a day. Same carb. range Blood Pressure is fine, breathing is fine and most of all I am more active. Yep, she is happy and I am happy. COULD not have done it without Spark and the help of the coaches and Everyone on the Teams I am with. I Insulin gone I would have been happy but two.....Celebration is in order. I have one month to do even better on this new Plan and you know what I CAN and I WILL

Thanks so much for your Support...............Micheke142.

I've told several people in the health care field about SP - one wanted to know how I was so certain of how much iron I was consuming and was VERY impressed when I told her about the nutrition tracker. I suspect she'll be reviewing it and suggesting it to her patients.

I LOVE the idea of working out on the mini-trampoline after a board meeting. I'm smiling just thinking about it. Maybe next time you'll want to incorporate some Tai Chi into the agenda, Chris?

Today's Fitness
I did only 10 minutes of fitness today on day 50 of the streak. (this is from yesterday, I forgot to post this last night!)

Today's Highlights
Today's fitness highlight was a really fun one. Even though I only did 10 minutes, they were such enjoyable fitness minutes! I did sprints with my two boys in the backyard. They really love sprinting around the yard and having fun.

Today's other highlight was doing a SparkPeople presentation at a large company. This was for an event put on by a SparkPeople member who works at a great catering company that is proud to serve healthy meals to clients. They even prepared dishes from recipes in The SparkPeople Cookbook what an honor!

Exercise with my children is always twice as much fun for me. Sounds like your sons will be growing up exercising and it will be something that will benefit them immensely. My children were actually the driving force for me to get healthy and in shape to begin with.

Today I rode my stationary bike 23 miles. I am keeping track of my mileage via mapquest from Cali and I am nearing Phoenix, Arizona now (81 miles out). WOO HOO!

Here's a fun comment I received yesterday about Coach Nancy! She's such a great example of someone who is changing lives just by being positive about her own experiences and spreading the spark to others anyone can do this!

GRACEISENUF7
10/22/2011 2:18PM

Congrats on your streak! Great spark mail from Pam. I love hearing when someone else has found their niche.

I just gave Spark Coach Nancy a goodie with a note thanking her for inspiring me. Nancy has always shared her loved of fitness/running with all her spark friends on her feed. Last year she would always post her love of "spinning" class. She would even make me laugh by how often she would ask...."Do you know how much I love spinning?"

To make a long story short it inspired me to buy an exercise bike a few months ago. Since the purchase I have logged 373 miles and ride it nearly EVERY day. I have found my fitness "niche" and enjoy every ride I take. Some people have called riding an exercise bike a "ride to nowhere" but I know exactly where I am headed...straight to ONEDERLAND in five more pounds.

One never knows what impact sharing their spark will have on someone else. THANK YOU FOR SP!

49 days is a GREAT streak! I am on my new streak of one day, LOL. It is helpful to know that you have to work as hard as we do to get/stay fit! Have a great day!

Walked the dog through the forest for 2.5 hours yesterday (the sun was shining); started today with an hour's swim...feel better when I 'move'.

Yesterday, a 10 mile bike ride before church.
Day before that, a 27 mile bike ride with my DH.
And today, 30 minutes of resistance training with a trainer. Lifting heavy weights on my own is too hard. Will be pulling weeds in the garden for a couple of hours in a few minutes.

Love reading the encouraging words that she sent you and also glad that you are feeling better. I joined at the end of the week last week, and I haven't spent enough time on the site getting acquainted with all of its features.. so I"m exploring the site this morning.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for the inspiration. I decided to spend an extra 10 minutes cleaning my kitchen, and ended up doing it for over an hour. I just needed the boost to start. Have a sparkin' great day.

Thanks for sharing your life with us. Yes Spark Coach Nancy is the best!!!
Today was my birthday and Hubby and I played a round of golf without a cart, we carried our clubs to get more exercise while we enjoyed the game.
Have a Spark filled week. Sandy

I spent the weekend winterizing my Koi pond so there were fitness hours, not minutes and my whole body is aching.

I love Coach Nancy's encouragement too, and think that she was a wonderful addition to the SP staff.

I got in over four miles in just over an hour, in a cool Fall walk! It felt great.

got in a 55 minute walk after being on my feet all day w/ a church dinner fund raiser - had to get the walk in because although I got "steps" on my pedometer - they weren't cardio steps - done. Plus maintaining my strength training streak! Woo Hoo for streaks!
