Classroom Experiment...Here We Go!

Monday, January 07, 2013

Today, I decided to have my 7th grade Reading students seat themselves alphabetically, after hearing my colleague do the same with hers.
Seems simple, right???

Apparently, NOT!

Why were some asking, "What's your last name?"... "How do we do this?"..."Why we gotta do this?"...(Peering at the cursive alphabet above my dry erase board)...Even the occasional, "Huh?"

I even had the last student listed on my roster seat him/ herself and wait for the others to figure it out. TALK ABOUT HILARIOUS!!!

Reality struck emoticon

These kids are not very good problem solvers!
I asked the class why they think I chose to have them do this.
Some responses were, "So we could work together"..."So we could talk to each other"..."So we could learn each other's names" (most have been with me the ENTIRE time since school first started in August)..."So we could use common sense" (insert "which I need to work at, too") Student was speaking of himself.

I told them all that they would be doing MORE activities like this so they can practice more independent, problem-solving skills, and be prepared to adjust to the "real world".

Just warning you all...

They're coming in a few years! emoticon

This is a fantastic activity. I've also had students seat themselves by the number of letters in their names and those with the same amount of letters, then seat alphabetically. This lifted the critical thinking another level. This was nearly too much for them to handle. Simply hilarious! emoticon emoticon

It can get challenging but these types of activities are as important sometimes as the subject you are teaching. I have tried this one in Spanish class and required the students to figure it out using only their Spanish or non-verbal communication skills.

I do not have an even number of boys and girls. I occasionally tell them they have to sit in a boy girl boy pattern, then watch them try to figure it out. It is amazing how long it takes them to find a way to make it work.

The "Master Plan" for 2013

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

1. Read a Bible scripture 4x/ week.
2. Drink 8 glasses of water/ day.
3. Reach fiber goal 3 days/ week.
4. Take deep breaths when I feel violent. (Did I mention stupid people get under my skin?)
5. Save enough by November 2013 for an Alaskan Anniversary cruise.

I know with support from my Sparkfriends and I, success is inevitable!

Happy New Year!

Excellent goals. They say goals should be attainable but challenging. That way you can benefit from the effort it takes and feel success at the same time.

The End Is Near

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Water-filled tubs...
Underground hideouts...
Judgement Day scares...

That is NOT what I am talking about!
Catchy title thought, huh?

The end of 2012 is near. emoticon

Many legends have gone in 2012...
Amy Winehouse
Whitney Houston
Etta James
Don Cornelius
Donna Summer
Michael Duncan
Robin Gibb
Sherman Helmsley
Joe Paterno
Jack Klugman
Larry L. King
Jenni Rivera
To name a few...

Although some were here on earth briefly, they've created a lasting impact for others to follow. Such talents from music to acting to sports, I cherish what each one has given back to society.
Thanks legends!

A new year awaits greater challenges, moments, and journeys to face.

Here we come!

The end is near, but not forgotten...
