Today, I decided to have my 7th grade Reading students seat themselves alphabetically, after hearing my colleague do the same with hers.
Seems simple, right???
Why were some asking, "What's your last name?"... "How do we do this?"..."Why we gotta do this?"...(Peering at the cursive alphabet above my dry erase board)...Even the occasional, "Huh?"
I even had the last student listed on my roster seat him/ herself and wait for the others to figure it out. TALK ABOUT HILARIOUS!!!
These kids are not very good problem solvers!
I asked the class why they think I chose to have them do this.
Some responses were, "So we could work together"..."So we could talk to each other"..."So we could learn each other's names" (most have been with me the ENTIRE time since school first started in August)..."So we could use common sense" (insert "which I need to work at, too") Student was speaking of himself.
I told them all that they would be doing MORE activities like this so they can practice more independent, problem-solving skills, and be prepared to adjust to the "real world".
Just warning you all...
They're coming in a few years!
