legends of the fall

Tuesday, September 01, 2009

The time of year is changing, for some reason this time of year, autumn, makes me feel great, maybe its because I hattttte the heat with a passion, or maybe its football, maybe its cause the kids are back in school, even though I dont have any at home to send to school....dont know for sure what it is, but each year with the fall, I begin to feel like its time for a change.
I know most people feel this way with spring.
But there is one thing about fall that is especially trying for me, its the food, chili and hot dogs at ball games and pots of thick homemade soups.
Fall brings with it the beginnings of comfort food.
I have already made chili once.
Yesterday I went outside earlier than usual with my dog, around 7am, I was up to see the school buses go by, and I couldnt believe that I got a chill,
It was around 50 degrees and I loved it!!!
This for me is walking weather and as we say here "good sleepin' weather"
I hope everyone is enjoying the last rays of summer sunshine and that everyone, myself included, can control themselves over the Labor Day weekend, dont be tempted by too many hotdogs, or cans of cola....
I look forward to just enjoying the cooler weather.

I am so with you on fall!! I absolutely love it. I feel renewed and confident and just revitalized! I know they make some low calorie versions of chili and other soups. If you cant find any on sparkrecipes.com I would look into the COok Yourself Thin Cookbook! I know they have some! Good luck and stay warm! emoticon

are they being truthful???

Thursday, August 27, 2009

I am writing this to comment on some of the tv shows I watch where there are claims of weight loss, now some of them I do believe work, for some people.
I am sure there are some people out there who have ordered something off of a late night infor mercial and its actually worked for them.
For others maybe not.
But here is my real question....are the claims these people make actually true. I am sure some people lose weight and go down in clothing size, but, recently on some show I was watching this woman was talking about how she had lost 42lbs and had gone from a size 22 to a size 4....
I was like "say whuuutttt????"
42 lbs? and she dropped 18 sizes????
Was it all true? Maybe she did drop that much weight...but was she really a size 22 to start with, and was she an actual size 4 at the end.
I know people who have lost that much weight, myself, not included at this point...but even a man I know who has lost around 30 lbs only went from a size 38 waist to a size 34...
I think sometimes they cook their numbers to make us all think that could be us, and maybe it could be us,
But at this point, being a size 22 myself, I cant even imagine losing 42 lbs and being a size 4....
I guess some would argue different body types, weight lost in different body areas, etc.
But for me, I think if I lost 42 lbs, remembering where I was 42lbs ago, I would most likely be around a size 18, possibly a 16 if I were extremely lucky and could actually lose flab.
Well, good luck to everyone.

Your gut is dead on the money. The body looses a "dress" size about every 10lbs. That is a rough estimate - but has been accurate over time (I'm a seamstress). So no - there is no way 42 lbs took her to a size 4 - but it DID take her to a size 12 -16 perhaps.

My philosophy has been that everything works if YOU work it! You have to eat well and exercise. It all breaks down to that.

I am a HUGE fan of Tony Horton (beach body - 90x) and have done some amazing work with those videos personally - but I had to DO the work to GET the results :) funny how that works.

If nothing else they are good for a good laugh.

Sad part is that people believe them. Do you ever feel like shouting "Sparkspeople.com" at the TV?

hunger....follow up...

Friday, August 07, 2009

Recently I wrote a blog about hunger, and how I have been suffering severe hunger pangs.
I also wrote that I was going to do some research and try to find out what might be the culprit, because I know I was eating enuff.
So, here are a few things I have discovered and wonder what everyone else thinks.
1. the first one is aspartame, the artificial sweetener in alot of diet drinks, now I am not one to consume many diet drinks, I just cant stomach the taste, but, I had been trying diet dr. pepper, my sister brought some to a picnic recently, so i decided to try it, I then went and bought some and had been drinking it regularly....since I have stopped drinking this drink, I am no longer having these intense hunger pangs.
So, I did some reading, and I found that the way it breaks down can cause changes in the metabolism in some people. I dont know if that was what was happening to me, but something was causing me to just have a growling kind of hunger.
2. Pain medication...I was recently prescribed the pain killer with codeine, for a shoulder muscle pain. I found that when I would take this medicine sometimes I would feel that gnawing hunger and would eat like a fattening hog. For those of you not from the country, u can look up that reference. I stopped the medicine for a few days and noticed the hunger wasnt as bad, however, this was around the same time I was doing my experiment with the diet drink, so not sure which one might have been the culprit, however, I am taking the medicine only as needed and not feeling the hungries like I was before, or was it the munchies?
3. the weather, now, I know some of you are thinking, what the heck??? But I just read an article in First mag.....and it was about how when its very hot during the day and then our bodies begin to cool off at night, we get changes in our metabolism and in our hormones, this is for women of course.
Being that I am nearing 42 and beginning to get those certain changes in my hormones, I guess this could be possible.
The article read that if we use cooling at night, the increase can be much stronger. But sorry cant help that, I have to have my a/c.
So, if anyone has any ideas or wants to leave me any helpful info, please feel free.
The hunger isnt as bad and I have been doing so much better.
Just hope I can soon report an actual drop in weight.

like swimming upstream

Monday, January 12, 2009

This is so hard this weight loss effort, especially when u have a friend who had gastric bypass and lost 20 lbs in like 3 days.
The daily struggle, just to keep yourself from drinking a soda, or eating a piece of chocolate. Why do some ppl have this life long race to run, and others do not?
I am getting so I feel like I am swimming upstream against the current in a tidal wave.
Maybe tomorrow I will feel better, but to lose 1 lb, its such a fight for me.

Hang in there!! This is a journey.... Perhaps you can give yourself one "small" goal for today... (i.e. park your car in a spot further than you normally would and walk the extra distance).... then, once you've done it, you will have been successful!!! It really is about making small, but lasting, changes!!

I just started spark people (for the second time) a couple of weeks ago... my first goal was to log on daily and find something that inspires me... (that was it!!) And, since I started small, I have been extremely successful (I log on faithfully)...

so, this week, I started using the nutrition tracker... (I actually LOVE it)!! And it is amazing how much it has affected my eating habits (remember, I haven't yet set a goal to really manage calories, etc.)... but just logging it has led me to eating less (and more healthy)...

So, be kind to yourself!!!
