Today: National No Beard Day

Thursday, October 18, 2012

This is something I never have to worry about. All the men in my life--home and work--are clean-shaven so I don't see this on a regular basis.

Now that I'm watching my beloved St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series, I wonder how most of the guys in bullpen can sport beards. Some look unkempt, others as short as a 1-day shadow of sorts.

What do you think? Are beards back en vogue? Will others who see their sports hero growing out their facial hair follow suit?

I sure hope not!

emoticon what a nice polarizing topic!!

I grew up surrounded with beards and mustaches. Many of my male relatives and family friends have had beards or mustaches, as well as both my ex husband. My boyfriend and husband has had a beard these past 20+ years we've been together - he didn't think he could have a beard while we were dating, because his previous attempts as a young adult never quite looked right. Turns out he just didn't give it enough time. After we were married and after our son was born, as a result of colds in the family, he had the opportunity to not shave for most of two weeks and by then he had a really decent beard. Within a month it was all grown in and he hasn't shaved it off in the 13-14 years since! (He does keep it trimmed shorter though - it's not like those fellas who don't ever cut their beard and let it grow out past their bellies or knees!!).

emoticon (he doesn't smoke and doesn't wear a red bandana, but this was the closest to his beard that I could find on SP emoticons...).

It's all a matter of preference and experience, not right or wrong!

Let me tell you, last night at the game I was wishing I had a beard to prevent wind burn. I think for the Cards it's probably a combination of three things (1) Superstition (2) Team bonding and most importantly (3) Prevention of wind burn.

I do think some guys will grow some facial hair because their hero's do, they'll probably be the ones with those scraggly, sparse beards!

Oh and what is the fascination with Brian Wilson's beard, that one kinda creeps me out. And your right, Motte is really beginning to look scraggly.

For some reason, I've seen a lot of people in my age group sporting the 80s mustaches or giant fluffy beards. I definitely don't like the trend! Thank God my husband can't grow a beard or mustache!

In sports I think it is bad luck to shave before a game. That's why they look so unkempt. My beloved Yankees lost last night, I hope your team fairs better!

I do not like the full beard. A neatly kept mustache is okay with me.

I cannot stand body hair, including facial hair. I can tolerate a reasonable mustache, but beards? Yeach! I hope they're not coming back in a big way.

Plan Ahead: Tomorrow is Wear Something Gaudy Day!

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Do you know anyone who insists on observing Hawaiian Shirt Friday? Time to one up that weirdo and step up your bad fashion factor! Don't worry, the Fashion Police are not working today -- they are celebrating Gaudy Day too!

So, when picking your Wednesday Wardrobe before you go off to bed, choose carefully what you will wear to get into the spirit of this day. Whatever you decide to wear today in observance, have fun with it. You might just get a second life out of that gaudy outfit on Halloween as part of your costume.

Spark on...

Today is National Desserts Day

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Yum! Some may choose to pig out on desserts today -- NOT I! I will not forget all the other major food groups! emoticon

There may be dessert before the main course, if I can put it all together before our Sunday family meal time. emoticon

At least no one in my family will EVER misspell desserts again. My favorite rule of spelling: Dessert has two "s" because you usually want or ask for seconds! emoticon emoticon emoticon

The Savings Keep Adding Up

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Earlier this week I told you about how I'm a coupon clipper and try to save 45-55% on my grocery trips. This week was one of those big monthly shopping trips.

My DH accompanied me so that we could wheel two carts and split our items into 3 transactions, which maximized our savings. Once again I saved 48% on our family groceries.

The great news is that I am closer toward our first brand new upright freezer. What a feeling!

Coupons and refunds is the way to go! I believe there is no reason to pay regular price for anything and you are not taking funds from anyone's pocket. Your wallet needs to go on a diet as well and what better way to do it! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

That's wonderful. I'm lucky to save 15-20%, but no double coupons around me, and I guess that's good for just the two of us. Better in my pocket than theirs !!

Amazing! I feel good if I save 10-20%, and I believe people who can't be bothered with coupons for items they routinely use are just paying too much. What a great example you set!

Pay It Forward: Your Unused Coupons Help Military Families

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

Maybe I'm a "couponing queen", but I don't really label myself as such. There are real queens who are making a living sharing their couponing knowledge with others. I admit that I follow some of their practices and advice. In many instances I am happy to share what I've learned with others in order to help whenever I can.

Case in point, paying it forward to support our military families abroad with Troopons(r).

A couple years ago my church bulletin announced that the parish is collecting coupons, current and expired, to help military families. That's when I realized that I don't have to recycle my unused coupons but rather pass them along to help these families who are managing to make ends meet while their loved one serves our country.

Here are some specific suggestions how you can help share your unused coupons that benefit Troopons:
o If all your children are grown, put aside those coupons for baby items.
o If you have a favorite brand of personal care products (tooth paste, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) clip all the others and pass those coupons along.
o Don't drink soda? Pass along all those beverage coupons.
o Have your own favorite brands of laundry detergent and household cleaners? Send all others to Troopons.

Now, you might be wondering...
How do I get these coupons into the right hands so they will be used? Check around to see if there is a volunteer group doing this in your area. If not, go to Troopons, a part of Support Our Troops(r). Here is the link:
www.supportourtroops.org/index.php?
option=com_content&view=article&id=1435

Read the FAQ, follow the guidelines and send them off. You can start supporting our troops and their military families today! Maybe you can even initiate a Troopon volunteer group in your church, local library or community center to get more coupon clippers involved.

My grandparents used to tell me that they supported the troops during WWII by rationing everyday necessities and buying war bonds. These are different times. I am proud to support our troops with Troopons! You can too!

Thanks for posting! I clip coupons, but I don't buy a lot of name brand items. I always have a ton of unused coupons that I recycle. Hopefully, I can find a group in my area!
