My Inspiration for Counting My Blessings

Monday, July 16, 2012

My last blog post mentioned that I count my blessings when I'm trying to fall asleep. Others replied that they read -- my former way of lulling to sleep. However, that requires using a light and my DH has to wake up at 5 am. So he's already snoring away by the time I even enter the bedroom.

That said, when I can't sleep I count my blessings, which can be done in the dark, so as not to wake him any more than I do simply by getting into bed and rustling the covers.

Also, though not an original idea, I have been practicing this "fall to sleep" idea since I was a kid. Music is a big part of my life and I first heard these words in a song while watching a classic Hollywood musical. The song is from Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" -- one of my all-time favorite movies -- performed originally by Rosemary Clooney as sung to Bing Crosby. Bing then went on to put this song on one of his Christmas albums.

I couldn't find the original by Rosemary Clooney but you hear the lyrics anyway in this link to Bing's rendition n YouTube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qmMaPTuTEE

What Do You Do When You Can't Sleep?

Sunday, July 15, 2012

When I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep.

In my mind I go through the things that went right throughout the day. Then I pick one thing -- just one -- that I could have done better and vow to improve on that tomorrow.

We are all works in progress and no one expects us to be perfect all day everyday. There is always tomorrow.

10 Min Can Be Habit Forming

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Earlier I posted that as of July 4, 2012, I've been active for 100 days. Basically that means each and every day I've logged at least 10 minutes of physical activity to get my heart pumping and my metabolism racing to a new Mii.

Well, now I can say that I feel it's a habit. If a day goes by that I don't do at least 10 minutes, I feel it -- both physically and psychologically! If I don't log onto Mii Wii Fit Plus, both the trainer and Wii Board take notice.

I've found ways to include up to 30, 45 or even 90 minutes of heart activity fitness around my busy working mom schedule. In addition, I consistently have logged no less than 8,000 steps. Most days I reach 10,000 to 12,000 steps, which is my personal daily goal.

Thanks, SparkPeople and all my new SparkFriends, for fanning my spark into a full-blown flame. Now I see that I can do this! With a little help and perseverance, this health and wellness journey is possible!

Large Size Attire Doesn't Have to Be Unflattering

Saturday, July 07, 2012

Having always been an observant person, I notice most things in my surroundings. But it's not for me to judge others so I focus on improving myself.

Recently, with this extreme heat we've been experiencing, I'm aware of the attire some wear to be comfortable. For someone who is obese -- like I am -- sporting a men's XXL t-shirt isn't the best solution to show off my pear-shape curves.

Realizing that such wardrobe choices are the most unflattering on me, this weekend I'm cleaning out my drawer of all my men's t-shirts in size XL and XXL. Not only are they unattractive when worn in public, they are difficult to maneuver when doing activities that require larger range of arm motion (Wii Fit, gardening, etc.) It's actually a practical solution to clear out unnecessary clothing.

Now that I'm fitting comfortably into a Misses XL, I can pick up a top here or there on sale to start replenishing my everyday active wear t-shirts. I especially like to find treasures in the outlet stores and on clearance racks now that we are between seasons.

Not to worry, these unwanted t-shirts will be re-purposed! My DH gets to select from these hand-me-downs or I'll take them to the ScholoarShop on my next delivery. They will be in good hands, I'm sure!

PS: I kept two of my favorites back to wear as night shirts. They had sentimental value!!

T-shirts are comfortable but not flattering to many women. I have been trying to find tops with V-necks and 3/4 sleeves and summery weight blouses. These can be found but I have to look hard. Designers I think are 'coming around.' I finally got some of those longer shorts with a stripe down the side. In size 3X they are really hard to find! And I broke down and bought some 'crop pants.' I find long pants in light fabrics to look best on me. But lots of people wear these shorter pants, I thought I'd try them. The problem is sandals don't support my weight enough. I wish I could wear sandals. I need the support of sneakers --with orthotics! Oh well. Chris

That's fantastic!! I wear a big top when I am on the treadmill because it's all I wear!! (yes I have on underwear :) I find it much cooler because by the time I'm done I'm dripping with sweat.

You are doing a great job. Can't wait to hear that the Misses XL are just to darn big now. emoticon

Better Late than Never

Saturday, July 07, 2012

Last weekend we were supposed to get a bunch of yard work done. Well, that didn't happen as we planned.

So, today we made up for lost time. We put in 3+ hours weeding, clearing overgrown shrubs and ivy vines, thinning out lilacs, and filling in more soil where needed. It's still a work in progress, but looks much nicer than before.

Tomorrow we'll make another trip to refill our soil supply and hopefully this will all be done before the end of the weekend.

Meanwhile, this day was full of great fitness activity. During the yard work hours, my Polar. heart monitor and MyTrak pedometer registered and logged everything. It appears that today I walked 5.6 miles and clocked 120 Heart Activity Minutes. In addition, I put in 60 min of water exercises when we went to the pool during the afternoon.

Oh, yes!! What a workout it was/is. My shoulders are really sore today.

We will be doing a bit more tonight at twilight. Hopefully that will be the end if our front yard until autumn leaves begin to fall.
