Quest of the Cardio King – Day One - 4K+ KCALs

Monday, July 09, 2007

Okay here we go with this cardio challenge … take it one day at a time right? Well this morning I’m feeling good and up on time … but then again it’s not today that I’m worried about, it’s WEDNESDAY. Anyway, let’s stay with today …

What does the day hold fitness wise? An overly full plate:

10:00am – Elliptical (Yes, I CAN spell it … two l’s thank you) – 1000 KCAL
5:45pm – Krav Maga – 1000 KCAL
7:30pm – Kenpo – 1000 KCAL
8:15pm – Kickboxing – 1000 KCAL

Wow, that’s a mouthful. Being fully rested from yesterday off from the gym … the problem now in my mind is proper nutrition … food = energy, right? So I need to get enough food into my body today to make it through the back to back to back evening sessions.

The plan … let’s try a normal breakfast before working out this am … a slightly early lunch around 11am … followed by a good dinner at 4pm … and a light snack at 7pm???

Planning to burn around 4000 calories today … means I need to eat around 4300-4500 calories MINIMUM … wow!!! My normal daily intake is around 2500, but we did add TWO additional workouts to today’s schedule.

… and off we go!!!

Can I Really Burn 20,000+ KCALs This Week ???

Sunday, July 08, 2007

So this weeks Cardio Challenge has officially begun ....... hopefully I didn't set the standard today by taking the day off from the gym? And I do feel very weird about it ... plus I had bread today ... fried shrimp ... a baked potato w/ butter?!?! Then dessert, my Oreo Custard Concrete?!?! Am I mad? All I know is that I am still sore from yesterday's workout ........ and I needed a friggin' break ...... call it a Mental Health Day from the gym!!!

So ... we have the following people challenging THEMSELVES this week to put up (or shut up?) the following numbers:

D710DANCE - 15000 KCAL
KEEKEEWASH1972 - 7000 KCAL
IMENOUGH - 6500 KCAL
ZEUSTER - 5000 KCAL
DIVINEMADNESS - 5000 KCAL
KYT1121 - 2500 KCAL

I've mapped out all my workout days this week ... and wow ... it's calling for 20K+ ... definitely a stretch goal for me. The problem will be a) eating enough and b) resting enough to continue my effort level. I imagine I will be eating a few Baby Ruth candy bars this week???

Good luck to us all !!!

Another SLOW 14K KCAL Week Is Over

Sunday, July 08, 2007

So ... The Others were dragging themselves into the gym ... presumably for a DeTox session in the sauna/steam room. They were just leaving the night club ... still reeking of the wicked combination of cigarette smoke and Patron. You could almost see The Fog (hey 2 movie references, ha) of the night surrounding them as they stumbled over each other ... like PigPen from the Peanuts.

This was the scene as I was sitting in the hot tub at the gym last night ... check that, this morning at about 2:15am. I had just finished my last cardio session for last week (hey, I started before 12am, so it counts for last week) ... and I was sitting there soaking in the waterfall of nearly boiling water ... thinking about how glad I was to have made it to the end of another brutal workout week. I was not nearly as sore and tired as I should have been ... but it was the good kind of tired. There were a few NEW muscles that were yelling at me about their pain ... I had tried Krav Maga for the first time that day and ... well ... it's a way to workout and get beat up at the same time, seriously beat up.

The Others were starting their debate about solving the "crisis du jour" ... what to do about swimsuits, duh. The guys were advocating skinny dipping (for the ladies), in their drunken stupor. The ladies WOULD have been cool with that, but as they were saying to the guys, " ... there's some dude in the hot tub .. he'll be looking at us ?!?!"

As I continued to relax, I was proud that I seem to be able to set goals and stick to them lately. Even on these weeks where there is no machismo to be gained or lost from the Cardio Challenge ... I have been consistently doing what I know I'm supposed to do ... doing what works! Of course, it helps to remind myself of my favorite quote daily: "He who controls others may be powerful ... but he who has mastered himself is mightier still" - Lao Tzu Seems to help me stay focused, keeps me from making excuses and ... as my smart ass kid would say, I forces me to "keep my head in the game"!!! (from High School Musical)

The Others had put their 4 heads and 37 functioning brain cells together and arrived at a solution ... they would just swim with their clothes on ... well, the guys would lose their tops ... but the girls would just tough it out in their club gear. Progress right?

Also sitting there in the hot tub, I was thinking that on the OTHER hand ... in the past, I really used to NOT put forth much effort trying to reach my fitness goals. I guess it seemed like effort at the time ... but of course the clue should have been that I was not reaching my goals. So maybe I was confusing simple activity with actual effort? Confusing the power of wishful (positive?) thinking with the power of being consistent in action? My lofty cardio goal for the week USED to be 4500 KCAL, hey that's a whole pound, right? Yet, here I was AGAIN ... this week ... looking at 14K KCAL in cardio put into the books. AGAIN on a slow week at that.

Again, I was disturbed from relaxing by The Others ... they had discovered a few MORE problems. First, two of them had forgotten to relieve themselves of cell phones in their pockets before taking the plunge (of course one dude was claiming to have been pushed from the grassy knoll). The major issue with that was that one of the phones was a brand new super expensive Apple iPhone ... check that, it used to be an iPhone ... now it was a dontPhone. In the same pocket with the iPhone was the electronic key to the Hummer ... it being just as allergic to water as the iPhone (just guessing on the Hummer ... but what else has a $800 electronic key? Lexus, BMW, Merc, take your pick). Of course, ole dude with the iPhone/Hummer key package is ... let's just say NOT thrilled. Further, he's unable to convince anyone that he was pushed into the pool ... we will see what shows on the Zapruder Film.

Either way, it was time for them to go ... at which time, the ladies discovered THEIR new problem ... the one of them what was wearing white ... now had on a see-through outfit and nothing to change into, duh? And remember, there's SOME DUDE in the hot tub looking at them, right? Finally Stormin' Norman stormed off and the rest of his little minions followed, modesty aside.

Aaaahhhhh, back to relaxing in the roar of the hot water waterfall. So ... my thoughts turned to the upcoming week. That I need to keep doing what I'm doing. Continue to do what works. Trying to think of better ways to work my fitness routines into my daily schedule. Debating if I am REALLY gonna take Sunday off from the gym ... as I had been promising myself All WEEK.

Thinking ... something has changed and I'm not exactly sure what it is.

And again thinking ...

July 4th Conversation With My Scale

Thursday, July 05, 2007

So, at the gym today, the conversation with my scale went something like this:

Scale: Yo dude, whats been up? Where the heck you been?
Me: Nothing much just chillin chillin
Scale: I thought you had forgot about me?
Me: Naw, just dont need to check in every day you know. I aint pressed.
Scale: Ai ight whatever. You gonna stand there all day, or what?

I step on the scale.
Scale: 203 and a quarter, G.
Me: What?!? You smokin crack !!! You can put an F on that?!?
Scale: Hey but like you said, You don t need to check in every day, right?
Me: Okay, just hold up (Getting undressed)
Scale: Oh, you think that s gonna help? Don't embarrass yourself, son.

I step on the scale again this time buck-naked
Scale: 199 point ahhhh ... seven. Feel better?
Me: Yo for real ... something aint right?!?
Scale: Them Ho Hos you been eating the Funnel Cakes the Dippin Dots?!? All THAT aint right.
Me: Ai ight, whatever (gathering my stuff)
Scale: So, let me ask you this, are you still targeting 187 lbs by next week? Thats 10 days from now, ya know? Or you thought I forgot?
Me: Hey, check with me in a week until then tap the breaks on all the commentary!
Scale: Ai ight Porky, you keep on chillin chillin ... but Ill be here NEXT Saturday ... EARLY!
Me: Hey ... Mos Def

So there you have it. Now for those that have not been following along my last weigh in was 188.3 on 06/24/2007. And as I was reminded, my target was 187.0 by 7/14/2007. So did I gain 11 pounds in a little over a week and a half? I think not but it was a shock seeing that number on the scale.

Thank goodness for the food and exercise tracker on Spark, right? Sometimes I am tempted not to log my food the cheeseburgers the ice cream the funnel cake, etc. The Oreo s the Baby Ruth candy bars. But, since I did I can go back and see that yes, I ve eaten a lot but I ve also had a lot of activity. It takes an extra 4000 calories to gain a pound the reverse of losing a pound, mind you. So, did I by some miracle eat an extra 44,000 calories in 10 days? Thankfully the answer is no. What is this extra weight? Water of course good ole water.

Again, looking back on the food tracker, I can see a few things that can explain this. First, let s talk about sodium good ole fashioned salt. So, I went from averaging 1400-2000 mg of salt per day to over 6000 mg of salt per day looking at it in black and white, seems nuts. But hey, fast food/processed foods sodium, it s what makes Chick-Fil-La taste so yummy, right?

Second thing, bread, bread and bread oh and did I mention bread? Seems like in my system, certain carbs bind with water. Rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, etc not that I feel bloated, but the scale (obviously) dont lie.

So, my guess is that Ive got a good 5-6+ lbs of excess water in my system because I have been staying VERY hydrated with the activities at the amusement park my norm is probably drinking 4-6 liters of water a day this week it has been up to 8-10 liters.

Definitely I am VERY hydrated because I noticed at the gym during my workout even though I was sweating worse than R. Kelly at a Girl Scouts convention (which is hard to do). I was not thirsty at all, even at the end. Of course, I had my normal 2 liter re-fill at the end of my session but it took a little forcing to get it down. Normally I feel like I could drink from a fire hose on high without missing a drop.

So back to preparing my own meals/foods flush some of the nastiness out of my system with even MORE water. Also, I will get back to eating my normal doses of fiber/veggies hey, one more Wendys Double Cheeseburger with extra cheese and I think my colon will go on strike, feel me? Cant believe I had (and finished) a Wendys Triple this week wow! And when I think about it ... that Triple (w/ cheese) is probably still "with me" ... if you know what I mean?

Saving the good news for last yes, there IS still good news this week. First, I actually worked out today I was the only one at my gym today at 7pm. Actually had to ring a bell to get into the building?!?! That usually only happens after 1am (don t ask me how I know that little tidbit of information). Turns out they were short-staffed today because of the holiday people getting the I wanna go see fireworks tonight-flu so the front desk staff were pulling double duty cleaning up the locker rooms.

And the other unexpected bit of good news I am amazingly on track to burn 14K+ calories this week how did that happen? Of course, with all the EATING I have been doing, I m not nearly as tired and drained from all the effort so, lets see if I can keep up this pace for 3 more days.

I need to start doing these cardio challenges on my SLOW weeks, dang!!!

I'm dreading mine ... I've not been nearly as good as you this week. Bad girl, right?

Another SLOW 10K+ Week In The Making???

Monday, July 02, 2007

Again, it's a slow week ... and AGAIN, it's off to a roaring start. No way my slow weeks can continue to be more intensive than my extreme weeks? So the plan was to spend the holiday week touring the local amusement/water park ... looks like the outdoor pool at the gym will get thrown in for good measure?

What I forgot was to include this EXTRA activity into my normal counting, i.e. spending 6 hrs today walking around in the baking heat, standing in line after line after line, finally riding thrill rides ... I think all that counts for some cardio! All this AFTER the gym at 6am this morning, ha!

So, let's try to leave the morning session in place .... and keep up with the kids the rest of the day. And EATING to keep up with my output won't be a problem these days (no more passing out in the middle of the floor) .... oooohhhhh, that funnel cake was GOOD today!!!
