12 week challenge update (pics)

Friday, January 18, 2013

I am almost done week 2 of my 12 week challenge and it has been going very well. Yesterday I really did not want to go to the gym I had an incredibly long day (got to school around 6:45, kids came in at 7:40, taught first three classes straight until 12:20, this is when my lunch would begin, but I had kids who are failing come in during lunch for a special weekly coach class, they walked out at 12:50, this would be my planning period, but I have another kid come in to work on SAT material, he walked out at 1:30 so I could go to a meeting. The meeting was over around 2, so I went to the workroom and made my copies for next week. School was over at 2:20. whew!). I was trying to think of every excuse not to go, but I had my scheduled training session, so I just went. I got there early. My training session was at 6:30. I got there around 4:30. I did the elliptical for a little bit (maybe 15 mins) and then decided to do the treadmill. I was just going to walk with an incline. I decided to jog for a little bit here and there. After a while I saw that the stair steppers were open, so I decided to try it. This is my first time every using this machine. I always see crazy fit, skinny girls on them so why not. I did stairs for a half hour. It said I did 100 floors and my heart rate was higher than on the elliptical or treadmill. It was pretty difficult! After that I did the bike for around 10 minutes and then it was time for my session. We did a half hour of weight lifting (mostly upper body because my legs were tired lol). I worked out for 2.5 hours and burned 1188 calories! I felt so awesome when I left. I had energy and was in a great mood. Usually I am stressed with having to spend that long at a place when I know there are things I could be doing at home, but it was really relaxing being there. I would like to make this a routine. So far this week I have burned over 2,000 calories and have been doing very well with my exercising goal.

I was also excited to try my new PB2. I bought it from the gym. They were out of the chocolate peanut butter flavor, so I just bought original peanut butter. I mixed it with water and it was VERY close to the regular consistency of peanut butter. I had it with a banana. FANTASTIC! I put some of the powder in my oatmeal this morning. It is also quite tasty (and for only 45 calories for 2 tablespoons who could ask for more!?).

I was feeling pretty skinny last night when I came home from the gym, so I decided to take more "ab" pictures. I was trying to wait until the end of the 12 weeks, but I just can't do it. lol. I was surprised to see progress! Here are my comparison pictures.

Jan 17th (current)- my thighs also look much smaller in this picture, but I had to crop it for appropriateness purposes lol.

There is still some fat and skin in the center of my stomach where my 6 pack should be lol, but I am noticing a difference. There is less mass on the sides and my bone structure underneath is becoming more prominent. I am estatic about this! I knew what I wanted to work towards, but I guess it is natural to not really believe if that is possible for you. If other people have done it why can't I... but I haven't ever done it before so I still was not 100% sure if it would work for me. I think it will!

Why I wanted to lose & Challenge update

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

I am in the middle of my 2nd week of the 12 week challenge. Last week I saw a 4 lb loss! I was back up a little bit after my weigh-in day, but that's usually how it works with me. My body fluctuates a little here and there, which is normal. I have noticed that I am looking forward to working out more now that I have started this challenge and I am much more consistent with working out. I am also being more careful about my food.

Last weekend I went latin dancing with a friend. I can't believe I danced in public with strangers! It was a blast!!

Current muscle pics

We had zumba in the dance studio yesterday rather than the cafeteria. It went really well! Hopefully next month picks up even more so we can continue the program. Here is a picture of me before zumba.

I did yoga again on Sunday with a friend. We haven't gone since the summer. It was fantastic!

This week I made probably my new favorite protein shake recipe. Strawberry banana cheesecake protein shake.

-frozen banana sliced (137 g)
-frozen strawberries sliced (124 g)
-2 c coconut dream original coconut milk
-1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
-.5 tbsp jello sugar free cheesecake pudding mix

SO good! It made 5 cups! (95 cal per cup). It took me all day to finish it.

One night I made myself some tortellini with lemon garlic shrimp and scallops. Quite tasty. I also bought myself more fruit. I can't wait until it is fruit season!

I wanted to end this blog with an interesting discovery I stumbled upon last night. I found the list of reasons why I wanted to lose weight in my phone last night. I was speechless when I read the list. I will share what was on there with you....
-To be able to jump
-To not have to wear a bra
-To have more sex
-To look better in clothes
-To have energy
-To be able to have fun athletic dates
-To participate in races
-To enjoy clothes
-To wear heels
-To get compliments
-To feel confident seeing people from HS
-For better posture
-To be a better teacher
-For pools and bathing suits
-For confidence
-To be able to take risks
-To not care about other opinions
-To feel good about myself
-So studetns won't say "what happened?"
-To be included in what friends do
-To be hit on by a stranger
-To wear sexy clothes
-So thighs won't touch
-For that breath taking look he gives me when I'm dressed to go out
-To enjoy fitness classes
-To maybe dance in public
-To be able to see my feet
-To not be embarassed at the doctors
-To like my hands
-To be able to shave
-For hip bones

I'm not sure if I shared that list before, but this was incredible to me. I feel like I've accomplished EVERYTHING on that list! As of Sunday I was 77 lbs down since I started and 10 lbs from my goal. However, my goal is more for appearance versus numbers. It is mind blowing to me that "to be able to jump" was my goal at one point. We all have to start somewhere and we all have to identify areas that we want to change. My new goals include improving my half marathon time and to improve my muscle tone (among other things), but it is really empowering knowing that in a little less than a year I was able to make such huge changes and change my whole outlook. I crossed off my weight loss bucket list and am making more strides daily. We can do this!!!

12 Week Challenge Progress (pics)

Friday, January 11, 2013

So you know that I can only go so long without posting pictures lol. The 12 week challenge is going well. So far since I started I am down 3 lbs (I started Jan 3rd, but the challenge officially started on the 6th). Working out has been much more consistent for me this week. However, I did have to put a hold on the Brazilian Butt workout. A few weeks ago I did the elliptical for a short amount of time and I am guessing that I pulled my left hip flexor. A week and a half later it was still sore and then it started feeling worse. I decided it was a better idea to take it easy on the lower body. At the gym this week I focused more on arms and I walked non-vigorously. I am hoping that next week it will be back to normal and I can do some of my lower body workouts that I enjoy. So far it has been feeling better, but I didn't want to risk an injury.

I am also excited to say that my boyfriend has been noticing a difference in his clothes. He wore a 1x v neck long sleeve shirt/sweater that is almost a thermal material and just bought some button up shirts and polos that are 2x's. He was a 4x! His weight has stayed the same and he went to the gym with me this week for the first time since probably the summer, but eating better must be making a difference. I am very excited and proud of him! He has always been close to the same size, so this is his first time ever wearing smaller clothes. Here is a picture I forced him to take while we were shopping yesterday. lol

I took some better "before challenge" pictures, so here they are. If you don't want to see my underwear then click away now lol. Since I am really trying to look for a difference in muscle definition it is easier to see with less clothing.

Here are some pictures I took a day or two later just lounging around the house. These are my pre-ab pictures lol.

Here is a picture of the outfit I wore last night. I was feeling in a loose shirt kind of mood. It was a great feeling because even though the shirt was slouchy I felt pretty tight and small underneath. I am also noticing that these blue pants that I bought in Puerto Rico on Thanksgiving are starting to feel a little big. I am not necessarily excited about this because they were from Express... but I guess that is good that I am still getting smaller:)

So far I am on track to reaching my goals and I won't get discouraged about getting BEHIND with the butt workout (haha- pun intended lol). Another woman at work decided to join the 12 week challenge and get on SparkPeople, so that has been super exciting! It is strange for me to get stopped by people I have never really talked to and for them to say that they heard about the website or the challenge and to help them sign up. The movement is definitely spreading. Hope everyone has an awesome weekend planned!

Mole question

Monday, January 07, 2013

So I am kind of freaking out and thought I would turn to my Spark family. I have had a variety of moles for a very long time. Several on my shoulders have been there since I was a kid, so I have never really thought anything of them. My boyfriend tells me constantly that I need to get them removed, but I'm a huge baby and have just kind of avoided it. I guess I thought if it was that bad then during my annual exam the doctor would notice and mention it, which has never happened lol. I decided to step up and confront this issue. I have a large mole on my shoulder that has an abnormal circumference. I feel like it might have gotten a little bigger over the past few years, but I don't have data to prove/disprove that. I also have a flat, light brown mole on my scalp near my hairline above my ear. This one has definitely gotten bigger. I read online that the flat moles are the bad ones. I have some other raised moles, but these two are the ones that have stood out to me the most. I made an appointment on Feb 1st with my doctor about these moles, but I am kind of nervous. The lady on the phone said my doctor removes moles or may have to recommend me to a dermatologist. Would they remove the mole that day or would they look first and then schedule a future date for "surgery"?? What is the process of removing moles? Mentally I am envisioning a huge knife sawing off the one on my shoulder and having to dig a hole in my shaved head to get the other one. Has anyone had moles removed? My head is getting hot just thinking about it:(

I know it sounds scary in theory, but getting moles removed is no big deal. They can remove them a number of ways, and it's all quite painless. No big holes in your skin, no big saws. :) The doctor should just be able to remove them right then, unless they're super busy. Like someone else said, it takes hardly any time. Easy peasy!

Good luck to you. I'm glad you're getting them checked out - better safe than sorry! Try not to worry too much. Whether you need anything removed or not, it'll all be fine and no big deal! :)

I recommend seeing a Derm Doc. I have had a large one removed from my back that was precancerous and the doc did a crap stitch job. Go to one who is not mole removal happy lol. I have had a few removed by laser onto neck (more cosmetic since they were irritating to my necklaces). I also have a few I need a real SKIN doc to check out. I need insurance for that...I feel your pain in being paranoid I have about 3 that are concerning me but my VA doc says they "look" fine... :/ hope you get things checked out!!!

I had one taken off my shoulder not long ago. There's nothing to it. Took about 10 min. and done. Didn't hurt either! Get them checked!

I also had a small cancer on my nose they numbed it sent it for a biopsy that same day. I see my dermatologist every 6 months to get an upper body check done. My regular Dr. never seemed to think there was anything to worry about. The most important this is please go get it checked it might be nothing but believe me you don't want to wait till its to late to find out. emoticon

They may just take pictures and follow them for a year. They will measure any grow from the pictures. Having moles removed can be painless. They can be frozen off sometimes, they always test them after, but most are nothing. If you have had moles most of your life, this is most likely the case. But have them checked just to be safe. Skin cancer is easily taken care of early on. Relax and take care of the little stuff before it turns into big stuff!

I wouldn't bother with your regular doctor. A dermatologist will do an all over check and remove anything suspicious and send it off to a lab. Even if it's a bad one, they can tell by the sample whether they got it all or not. I have a LOT of moles. Some I've had all my life but didn't turn "bad" until I was an adult. I go yearly to the derm and average a bad one every 1.5-2 years. Definitely something to stay on top of, your dermatologist will be able to tell you how often you should go. It is SO not a big deal to get one removed.

I had some skin tags removed and it was not bad. My mom has had a few suspicious moles removed, also not too bad. I would agree that they would probably want to do it the same day (but if you really want to say no and schedule it later, I think you could say that.) Try not to worry. It is very good that you are getting these checked. Also, show the doctor all of the moles, and then that can be a baseline for future comparison.

    see a dermatologist

if it is anything suspicious, yes they will numb you that day and remove it and send it out for a biopsy. My doctors nurse actually did it for him after you are numbed, she used a small instructment and it was gone two stitches were put in and I was on my way.

Got a call back a few days later that mine was pre cancerous and was brought back in where a dermatologiy surgeon numbed me up more, and removed it. had eight sticches that time.

do not worry so much you could have worse things happen,

I hate needles but it was not bad saw and felt NOTHING

Brazilian Butt Workout

Saturday, January 05, 2013

I decided to try working out at home today. For whatever reason this is hard for me. I had enough space in our bedroom to put a towel on the floor and made it happen.

I did a 1 min plank and 20 sit ups. Then this Brazilian Butt workout I found on pinterest.

20 squats
20 plie squats
20 donkey kicks (each leg)
20 fire hydrants (each leg)
20 circling donkey kicks (each leg)
30 alternating sliders
30 hip lifts
20 lunge kicks (each leg)

I did some stretching and yoga moves after. Whole thing was 42 mins and I burned 328 cal. I was out of breath and had to take some breaks. It definitely worked me. You are supposed to do the whole thing three times, but I wasn't able to yet. I am making this part of my 12 week challenge. We will see those results on april 1st:)
