Spirit of The Marathon

Thursday, January 19, 2012

That was the title of the documentary I just watched on net flix. They followed several people through their training for and running of the 2005 Chicago marathon. I actually felt the emotions as they fought through the pain and when they crossed the finish line it was like I was back at the finish of the marathon that I completed.

Watching this just reinforced my resolve to again run a marathon this year and not just complete it but to run the whole time.

Overall my training is going well weight keeps going down and miles are stacking up. I think I am on my way

All Those Workouts

Thursday, January 12, 2012

I was up early this morning and had to wait an hour before I could go to the Bear for coffee. I was looking through the program guide and started watching all the infomercials for different workouts. The funny things is they all claimed to have found the "Scientifically Proven" way to lose weight and all these miracle testimonies of people it worked for.

The thing I noticed is that if you watch the workouts long enough you will notice the same moves on different programs...hmmmmmm... The thing they don't tell you is when you get it in the mail it usually comes with a diet guide (HUH???) well go figure diet and exercise together.

I think what the marketers count on is people thinking "well gee I can get this program and still eat that bag of chips" HELLO Cletus no you can't. You eat that bag of chips and do you know what it will take just to work that off?

Now I am not downing these programs I have personally bought P90X and 10 minute trainer both of which I love. I just think people ought to look more closely at what they are getting into before diving in. I mean come on you can do all those workouts right here at SP and the videos are free. SP will set up a workout schedule for you if you need it... so think before you buy and make sure that you have the basics under control before you dive into a program that is so intense that all you did is spend 100-200$ for a dust collector.

Have a great week meeting your goals

4 Years

Sunday, January 08, 2012

Today marks my 4 year sparkaversary. Hard to believe that 4 years ago today I said enough is enough and after watching a weight loss special on tv and the segment about SP I joined.

Even more amazing is the fact that I am still here. Oh I have had my ups and downs, met my goals and then gain some back, ran a long ways and then stopped. But you know what I am still here, I am running, logging, working out and losing weight.

Over these last 4 years I have learned a lot about myself and what makes me tick, what triggers me to eat and what keeps me going. I think a lot of that is do to the awesome leadership of one Mrshoneyc aka Rita. Poor Rita had the privilege of getting stuck with the largest spark class in history 50,000+ but through her leadership there are still a lot of us here 4 years later plugging along, don't believe me go to your spark classes page and see where it is on the leader boards. After 4 years ours is still in the top 20, that is an amazing thing to me. Thak You Rita.

I can hardly wait to see what this tear brings along with the next 4

Hey Greg I am right there with you. I will have my 4 year anniversary tomorrow. As long as we don't give up we still have a chance to make it. I thank Rita too for the help she gave us. I don't think she even realizes the impact she had on her team. and I thank her for that!
Keep on keeping on!

It's Just 10 Minutes

Friday, January 06, 2012

Thats what I told myself yesterday when I was done with my run. Let me back up a little.

I told my DW that what I wanted for my BD was the 10 minute trainer videos by Tony Horton (you know the P90X guy) so thats what I got. Well when I got home from work yesterday they were waiting for me... YIPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!

I went on my scheduled 3 mile run and when I got home I opened everything up got out the workout schedule and guess what workout was first?????

Give up well it was lower body... Great I just ran. This is where I told myself "It's only 10 minutes, how hard can it be" BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I should know better I have done P90X and Horton does not do anything easy. That 10 minutes made me realize just how out of shape I have gotten despite still running, an hour after the workout my legs were so sore I could hardly walk. Today is better and I did the cardio video today, not easy but doable I am sure glad I got these DVD's and excited to see the changes after 1 month.

Hope everyone is doing good with their new years goals and stick with it we can do this

Miles and Milestones

Thursday, December 08, 2011

So I have been running 4 days a week, Mon, Wed, Thur and Sat. This week I decided that it was time to ramp it up a little and ran 3 consecutive days, Tue, Wed, Thur and I will run again on Sat. I logged 13.03 miles in the last 3 days and am not nearly as sore as I thought I would be. Saturday we are doing 7 miles so right on track for the 1/2 marathon in Jan.

I will stick with these running days until after Jan the will add a Monday run as well as increasing my daily mileage. My goal for the marathon training is to be at 70 miles or more per week a month before the marathon. I know that sounds like a lot and it is but I know that is where I need to be to meet my goals. I have mapped it out and it is easily (well as easy as 70+ miles a week can be) obtainable.

Weight wise I am doing well I am down another pound this week and soon hope to see that 219 on the scale. I am not in a big hurry I know it will come. Probably start coming off real fast when I start adding core work to my weekly routine.

Well I hope everyone has had a good week and your weekend is even better.
