On the Job Hunt

Tuesday, August 05, 2014

It's been several months since I blogged on SP. I've gotten back to tracking my food and fitness again, and starting to see positive changes. Other things are changing, too. After 5 years out of the regular work force, I am searching for a job.

For a long while, I was my mother's FT caregiver. She passed away in March 2013. I've also done a few freelance art assignments, sold some goods online, and did some odd jobs to earn money. But for the most part, we are living solely on my husband's income.

We're doing OK, but if we want to move forward, it is necessary for me to work. That way we can start saving money for our goals, including buying a newer truck and camper trailer. We're also saving money for our HUGE 5-month backpacking trip on the AT in 2015.

I will admit it. I feel a little scared. It's been a long time since I've had a job, and I feel like a fish out of water. It will be an adjustment, but I know I can do it. But the last week I've been dragging my feet to update my resume. I know I have to get it done TODAY!

The job itself will be temporary. We plan on leaving on our backpacking trip in April. But I know it will be good to do something to contribute to our family. I'm praying I find a job with good people and not a lot of drama!

OK....off to work on my resume!

Making Changes...again

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I haven't been active on Spark People in over a year, only popping in to say "hello" once in a while. Last spring I lost 22 lbs. hiking the Appalachian Trail, and had a fairly active summer despite a leg injury. I enjoyed walking nearly every day and even rode a bike (pics in my gallery). But once winter set in, I got into a state of depression and also less activity. This caused me to gain back the weight I lost and then some.

I've been making changes slowly in the past three weeks or so, and it's starting to pay off. I lost 6 lb in the past 2-3 weeks. I'm eating more veggies again...a surefire strategy to get some nutrition AND eat less calories. I'm walking a few times a week, even if it's cold or the sidewalks and streets are covered in several inches of snow. That actually adds resistance to my workout, and a little added challenge. My hubby walks with me and he's supporting me in all my efforts.

Originally we were planning to head back to the Appalachian Trail this April to complete what we started. But several things happened that changed our plans. Due to the "Snowpocalypse" the past couple months, my hubby lost quite a few days at work. Since he's a temp, that means no pay. Also we prayed about the AT trip, and received some direction to focus on some other things right now. So the AT will have to wait...at least another year.

We do have some exciting things to look forward to, and it's been fun to do goal-setting together. The longer we've been married, the more we seem to work as a team to get things done. I'll share some of our new plans soon. I'm also hopeful that I'll be out of my "winter blues" very soon, especially since there are good things to look forward to. Prayers are always appreciated. :)

It's Only a Paper Moon

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I created this video to highlight my love of vintage/antique photography, espeically the craze from the early 1900's of photographing with the Paper Moon. I used a winter/Christmas theme template from Animoto, and paired it with "It's Only a Paper Moon" by Ella Fitzgerald. Enjoy. :) This movie isn't related to weight loss, but rather reflects my creativity which helps keep me happy and motivated to succeed.

Very Creative. I enjoyed it. Our weight every day is a constant reminder that we need to do something to loose it. But sometimes we need to take our minds off it and show other interests others might like to try and enjoy. Which takes us away from thinking about food all the time. Plus it shows us your likes and personalities.

#2 Are you sure I'm old enough to have a Coke????
#3 Let's read the ingredients…
#4 Are you kidding me?? You people drink this junk?? Can't you read??

(A gentle reminder I need to kick the habit for good)

I'm a Pepsi addict, myself ~ but I sure do get your point!!! emoticon I had stopped drinking pop, of any kind, for months ~ and in the last week have started drinking them again ~ occasionally. With full intention of quitting again. Well, there is no time like the present. So, I will officially commit to laying off the pop. Thanks for this great reminder! I hope you have an easy time quitting! emoticon emoticon emoticon .
