My Lucky Day

Friday the 13th is usually my lucky day. I think we make our own luck, to a certain extent.

Guess I should go buy a lottery ticket and go to a casino. Nope, my idea of good luck is the good health I enjoy and the love of family and friends. Of course, a better economy would be very nice as well.

    Good thoughts.. positive energy makes every day a good day. I do consider it lucky if I get through the day without breaking/dropping/smashing/etc. something. I am the clumsiest person I know!

The Journey Stopped Being Fun about A Year Ago

Yes, SP site is fun. Nice people, reinforcement of good habits, etc.

However, this dratted plateau has gone on forever, and I've gotten advice out of the kazoo (ouch!), which I've tried and tried. My body does not want to part with any more of this dearly beloved blubber. But I still have about 20 lbs. to go.

So, I have to reassess how to do this and get back to feeling the fun. I will, and when I do, I'll tell you about it.

You are so right...I am currently in the "I'm so excited I found SparkPeople!" phase. (Only with Spark for about a month) However, I have been struggling with my weight...let's see...oh yes...FOREVER! :D I have had great success with Weight Watchers, but have experienced exactly what you are describing. I wish I knew the magic key to getting past it...one of my friends insists that changing up the routine works every time.

I just had an epiphany tonight while going to grocery stores.

    Being stuck su--- !!!
I had to face that I wasn't making progress and just move on. It was like I was on hold... waiting for something to happen and it didn't. What I did do was maintain a 30 pound weight loss for 3 years and that is nothing to sneeze at. I didn't realize that I had to move to the next level. I had to make changes.
Find something fun and go for it.

TOO MUCH WATER?

Last Saturday, I started an extreme one-week experiment that I'll be writing about soon.

Part of this one-week has entailed upping my water intake to 16 glasses (8 oz) per day. Yikes! The point of this is to feel fuller and, thus, less hungry.

All it has done is to keep me in the bathroom all day, and I am also concerned that it's too much and washes away minerals. (Yes, I do replace them.)

Okay, and a question that I've researched and gotten different answers to - do other drinks count as water?

Wondering if this is too much water intake. Any feedback?

    1/2 an ounce per pound of body weight - example I'm 285 so that's 142 oz water per day, = 9 glasses of 16oz sized waters.

As long as it's spaced out it's healthy.

I stop 3 hours before bed.

    One thing I heard recently is that we all vary in how much water we need. Why would a 150 lb woman need as much as a 300 lb woman, for instance. The recommendation was to drink half your body weight -- so if you weighed 150 lb, for instance, you'd want to shoot for just 75 ounces of water a day.

Another way to tell if you're getting too much is the color of your pee. It should be light colored. If it's more of a golden color, then it's too concentrated.

I really don't think I could do 16 glasses a day. I think my tops has been 12, and I'm usually around 8-10.

I do include anything that doesn't have sweetner or caffeine, so I include my herbal teas.

    I drink significant amounts of water but I also take anti-inflammatories .There are many variables in how much water you consume ,temperature , exercise etc. Basically how you feel will be important so the experiment has merit.love and hugs,Cheri

    OK, just re-read - the point is to feel fuller. Sorry.

This seems a bit of an extreme solution. I'm become a big fan of exercising - in part because it allows me to eat more. Have you considered upping your exercise? If you do, don't forget to adjust it on the exercise tracker & then the nutrition page will update your new calorie range.

SNIKWAD seemed to answer your questions pretty thoroughly. I count herbal tea (no caffeine) as water. I imagine you're going pee a lot because you're body has more water than it needs, so it's flushing the rest. Literally. emoticon

    There is a such thing as water intoxication but in healthy adults you'd have to be drinking close to 5 gallons of water (in one sitting) to be in the danger zone for that. Otherwise, just "going to the bathroom all day", no that's not a sign that you are drinking too much water.

But, one estimate of how much water you should be drinking, dependent on your body weight.....you should drink 1 fl oz of water for every 1 lb of your body weight. So, someone weighing 150 lbs should be drinking around 150 fl oz of water per day to remain "well hydrated".

As for other drinks, are they water? The purists say no, of course, because the guidelines for how much "water" you should be drinking are based on you just getting clean, pure, cleansing, hydration, nothing more.

But, I look at in terms of what am I adding to my body...is it just hydration (water)....or is other stuff included that's not in "pure water"? Like sugar, caffeine, sodium, etc?

To me those are the big things that get the "No" answer for a given drink. So, soda, milk, tea, coffee, apple juice, high-sugar sports drinks, no, I don't count those as "water".

    Ease into it, don't go hangho build up to the amount..Also don't drink too much near bed time, it can disturb the hormone system that slows urine production down at night so we can sleep...

The Scale Game I Play (without intending to)

For someone who never weighed herself until two years ago (I didn't need to most of my life), I now own two "good" scales. Neither agrees with the other, so I've stored the one that scores my weight higher. It must be way off. (smiling)

After 1.5 years on SP, and almost 2 total years of this healthier lifestyle change, I have not let the scale become the master of my fate. Yes, I understand the other benchmarks for success and have used measurements, clothing fit, etc. to judge my progress.

But lately I've been more diligent about keeping myself posted on current poundage. It goes something like this...

I figure the scale's parts are "cold" when I first step onto it, so I weigh about five times. Each time, I get a different number despite not standing in tricky positions to appear lighter. (smiling) Then I ponder my past math class and wonder if I should take the mean, median, or mode.

If I remember correctly, the mean would be averaging all five numbers. Adding, then dividing. Whamo - my "true" weight. Or, I can take the median - the number that arrives in the middle of the other four. And the mode - the number that repeats the most often. Why do I do this to myself? It just comes naturally! (smiling)

Since there was no repeat number this morning, and I was too lazy to average, I went for the median. Hooray for me! Who knows what I'll choose next time?

    I just make sure I weigh myself first thing in the morning. I don't give the scale the opportunity to change it's mind. When they weigh me for chemo it is like stepping on to a cargo scale. I always use the explaination that it is later in the day and I have had a lot of water. And besides (whine, whine) I'm tired. I like to think I weigh more when I'm tiered! LOL

    Just be sure that my D H is no where behind you. He has a habit of sneaking up behind me and putting a" toe" on that DARN scale and brings my weight up about 5 or 10 lbs!!! Just what everyone needs a JOKESTER in the family! emoticon

    Wow 00 were you in my bathroom this morning??
I've decided that it is the derivative that matters most and as long as the curve is aimed DOWN, (or the battery needs to be replaced!) all is well. And I keep the sample size to 3 checks!

    I have that same 'heavy' scale...LOL!

I play the scale game too. Digital scales are easier (or ARE they?) 'cause a number displays and you can't play the...is it closer to this or this 'game'.

The doctors scales are always 'way off' too...hee, hee.

It's just a number but it does mess with our minds. Just one 'tool' for us to measure our progress.

Sometimes this is what I feel like doing to it... emoticon
