I Know I'm Making Progress When.... (#2)

Thursday, June 17, 2010

... I look into my grocery cart at the checkout and am amazed that it's my cart. I inwardly marvel, "Wow, look at all that healthy stuff. Could it really be my cart? Yes, this year and a half adventure into better health has taught me to make a list (check it twice) and look at nutrition labels on the packages.

Granted, I still have a way to go in being the ideal grocery gal shopper, but hey, I'm making progress! Hooray for me!

Wishing all a great day.

(p.s. Both concerts last night were just sooooo much fun.)

Isn't it amazing when you can see how the small changes we've made start to add up and show? Every once in a while I am reminded of how my husband and I are both choosing different foods and beverages and portion's been so gradual that it doesn't seem like much but it's there. Good for you!

I Know I'm Making Progress When.... (#1)

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

...I'm headed to the county fair today - whose theme btw is "food" -and not a bit worried about my choices.

Why? Certainly not because I make perfect choices after a mere 1.5 years of healthier eating (after a lifetime of poor habits), but because I have learned to do several things. Look for healthier food while there. Drink lots of water. Have a healthy snack before leaving so that I'm not famished. Don't get into the "what the heck, it's a holiday" mode of thinking and then dig into a ginormous Texas donut.

I bought a pass that will admit me free any number of times until July 5 to enjoy all sorts of music they will have there. Tonight will be Dennis DeYoung (former lead singer of Styx) and Foghat. Next week will be Kenny Loggins, Lou Graham (Foreigner), and Lonestar. I love all kinds of music from all different eras.

As for food, I will enjoy myself. But that doesn't mean overstuffing. Throughout the past year and a half I've learned to eat to live, rather than live to eat. Still learning, but have come a lonnnnng way, baby! (smiling)

Wishing all a wonderful day.

    Sounds like great fun!

I usually just don't eat at fairs, which saves lots of calories. Do love me some funnel cake, but it's so not worth the calories (and always share it if I do indulge.

Earthquakes are Making Me Lose My Appetite

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

We have had several strong shakers since the 7.2 on Easter Sunday. I'm sitting here dizzy and sick to my stomach as my whole house just shook like a wild ride with a 5.9. Where should I move to, any suggestions?

Move to Wisconsin. We don't have earthquakes. There's always something. Like rain. But Mostly it's pretty nice around here.

Like the other posters said - there's always some issue or other....where I'm from it's pretty much snow (Winter '10 was extreme) and flooding rain (I live near a nationally known, notorious flood zone......nationally in the sense that pictures of my area have been found on - I kid you not - (Houston Chronicle) and BBC America, and CNN HN filed a report from my town - so surreal) - so go figure......

Wishing you the best in whatever choice you make.....

The east coast is quite lovely... here in CT we have the occasional nor'easter. But usually we have advance warning.
Hope you feel better soon.

My DD Just wrote to me that she just had a earthquake shake her house a bit ago too. You must live close to each other? Now there are lots of little after shakes. She is very scared right now too. I hope that it settles down so that both of you can relax.again. It's scary and unsettling to have the earth shake like that..
No place is safe. We all take our changes every day in some way or the other. emoticon

No matter where you live there will be something. I have been through 2 major earthquakes, and yet I fear a tornado more. Some parts of the states are having bad floods right now. Nothing is safe really.

I fully understand how you are feeling. A couple years ago I was feeling sick and could not eat anything beyond a little light fare (without realizing why), and after the earthquake I suddenly felt better. You are obviously very sensitive to the earth movements, but I do not know if there is anything that can change that.

20 More to Go

Wednesday, June 09, 2010

On this site for over a year
Is my goal even near?
I doubt I'll ever lose the rest
Of this weight that I detest.

Thinness all my life left town
When hormonal changes came around.
It took my brain awhile to admit
That I was fat, it's the pits.

I hate to even say the word
It's something that I never heard
During my life - fat fat fat
Now what do I do about that?

I've lost a bunch, but there's more
So from the time I go to the store
To get the food and then ingest
I have to put myself to the test.

To follow healthy rules is good
Through SP I've learned what I should
Do or don't, so I rely
On this site to help me fly

To my goal of 20 more down
I guess I'll have to stick around
Until I've got this routine down pat
This is what I'll do about that.

(Some folks have advised me to use the word "fluffy" instead of fat. All this time, I've thought of myself as having become "chubby." I am not fluffy any longer. With 20 lbs to go, I am feeling more like my old self, but will not be content until the rest is gone.)

I enjoyed your poem and am so glad that you are sticking with it since I feared losing you a while back....I think we go along for a long time without seeing ourselves then something happens and we see only the bad....those who advised you to call it fluffy wanted you to be kind to yourself and not engage in negative self talk but there is something to be said for clear vision too and I believe you can tackle what you, focus on your goal....don't be too critical but don't practice self deception will do may be a longer timeline than you wanted bu it will happen. emoticon

You are doing great, doing fantastic on your SparkJourney. Keep up the good work!

And fat is fat. Yes, I am fat. No, I'm not fluffy, which sounds like a cat. (Hey, I almost rhymed!!!) People from the South have euphemisms for everything, but calling a spade a spade is preferable to me. Everyone's different!

My Brain Thinks I'm Skinny

Tuesday, June 08, 2010

All my life, up until the past few years when the hormonal tidal wave occurred, I've been able to eat anything at any time of day or night in any quantity. Yup, not even one pound gained as a result.

So, one gets used to that type of metabolism. But one day I awoke with extra pounds on my bones for the first time ever and it felt (most of it is off with 20 to go) beyond awful.

I've been at a plateau for about a year now and my body doesn't want to give up more weight. So my brain has started to think that means that I can eat the same way I always have with no price to pay.

Wrong! Thanks to the reinforcement from this SP site, I have learned and stuck to new ways to deal with healthy patterns, thoughts, and actions. If it weren't for SP, I would probably revert into my old way of thinking. With time, I'll do this on my own. But for now, I'm still working on lifetime patterns that just do not hold true any longer.

I feel your pain when I joined the military I had to gain weight !!!! I was used to eating what I wanted when I wanted .Then an accident and limited mobility changed my reality so I have to keep remembering that was then this is now !It is my body and my mind and I am in charge I just keep reminding myself LOL!

I can really identify with what you're saying. A few years ago I was very fit, I went out running 3 times a week and went to the gym 3 times a week. I could eat anything I wanted and not worry.

Then I had an accident and tore the tendon in my right leg. This meant I couldn't exercise for almost a year. Unfortunately my brain didn't get that I couldn't eat the same way I had been. Needless to say I gained weight.... 4 stone to be exact.

I started trying to lose weight again just before Christmas and up to now have lost 23lbs so Im not doing too bad. I can't wait to get to the 30s.

I wish you all the best on your journey.

Take Care
