Went to the Movies w/o Popcorn or Candy

Saturday, January 02, 2010

There used to be a day when there was no way that I could go to a movie w/o a feeding frenzy of treats. After a year's healthier journey, I went to the movies today and didn't even miss the treats. I'd eaten a healthy breakfast, had my water beside me, and had already planned a healthy lunch afterwards. Hooray, hooray! Looking forward to another year of treating myself right.

Good for you! I love to go to the movies. It is really hard not to snack when at the movies at least for me. We went to see Avatar which is a almost 3 hour movie. We had eaten breakfast before leaving and had lunch right afterward. So I didn't miss the snacks at the theater to badly. I am still working on it.

Excellent job! Ironically enough, we went to the movies yesterday too, only we did have popcorn (a small) because we'd earned a free one. Only that plus a protein bar WAS lunch because there wasn't enough time beforehand, and I knew I'd be starving by the time we got home (about 3 pm). And I am fine with that. But I had such a good eating day planned before that!

Way to go!!! I went to the movie the other day and didn't get anything. But it was because I refused to pay those crazy prices and it didn't smell good to me. So I know that was a big accomplishment. emoticon

  GO YOU!!!

I haven't given up the popcorn yet, but it's so hard to get a hand into the bag when it's in hubby's lap. I might as well give it up. :-)

And the nice part about not eating almost an entire huge bag of popcorn is I was able to enjoy dinner with him afterwards! He didn't have room and brought most of his home and it wasn't anywhere near as good reheated the next day as the night we got it. Guess I just won all around!

Enjoying "The Spark"

Friday, January 01, 2010

Have to say that this is a great way to start a new year - reading the info that reinforces all I've learned after a year (almost) on SP. Thanks to Chris and the SP team, and of course, to all my sparkfriends.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous 2010.

I started immediately on Chapter 1 - then I went back to the introduction because I didn't want to move to fast in the book. Chris makes a statement in his intro, "And The Spark will give you a more portable and tangible source of ongoing inspiration, to place by your bedside or take along on your daily commute." He definitely was right on point, I plan on reading the book on my commute and spreading the spark. However, I don't know if I can last that long, I just want to keep on reading and reading. I'm so excited about the book, I call my "sister" and SparkFriend today and told her I was ordering her a copy. Senility set in and I couldn't remember her address so it won't be a surprise, so at least she knows it's on the way.

It's a terrific book, isn't it?? Read it fast, loaned it to my daughter, will wrest it back from her soon so I can reread more slowly and implement some of the great suggestions, particularly about maintenance!!

A Thank You to All of my Sparkfriends for Making 2009 a Sparkadventure

Thursday, December 31, 2009

It's been a tough year for me with the loss of many friends and family members, as well as other life challenges. However, the Sparkadventure was so helpful in keeping me on-track and staying accountable in this healthful journey.

Some of my sparkfriends are no longer on the site, others have hung in there, and new ones have appeared. To each and every one of you, thank you so much for all of your kindness, support, and humor.

Here's to wonderful things in 2010 for us all.

Can Fidgeting/Tapping Really Burn 350 Daily Calories?

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

I read an article about 50 ways to burn more calories each day. It said that slimmer people are usually tapping or otherwise fidgeting. It recommends that doing this can burn up to 350 calories daily. In fact, I'll cut and paste it below:

34. Tap your foot. Your skinnier friends are probably fidgeters, who burn up to 350 calories a day just by tapping their feet or being restless. Try it for a few days. Walk around while you’re on the phone, or tap out a tune with your hands or feet (in the privacy of your own office, of course).

Seems too easy to be true. However, where would I start doing this? In the course of a work day, I run the risk of looking like I have had too much coffee and being hyper-active. I can just see me adding this to my fitness tracker and counting it as 350 calories burned. (NOT!)

Let me know if this has actually worked for anyone out there. Have a wonderful day.

Then typing should equal fidgeting/tapping. If so, then I've burned 1000 calories in the last three days!

MY WHOLE LIFE IS BEING HYPER. I CLEAN 5 ROOMS AT ONCE MY FAMILY SAYS, I CAN NEVER SIT DOWN FOR ONE MOVIE, I ALWAYS HAVE TO DO SOMETHING OR TAKE CARE OF THIS OR THAT. I HAVE BEEN 5"7" 130 AVERAGE SINCE 1978. RUNS IN THE FAMILY. I DO FIDGEIT AND IT DOES BURN CALORIES. WHY???? CANNOT LITTLE THINGS BE ADDED ALSO? IT BURNS CALORIES. EVERYTHING SHOULD COUNT NOT JUST BIG TIME EXERCISES. WHY SHOULD WEIGHTS ETC. JUST COUNT? I HAVE A HOUSE CLEANING, FAMILY TAKE CARE OF LIFE. I INCLUDE CLEANING IN MY FITNESS. IT IS ON THERE. LOOK PEOPLE. IT IS FITNESS. EVERYTHING YOU DO THAT MAKES YOUR MUSCLES WORK IS FITNESS! EVEN SMILING!!

I can not fidget even when I try, my mom glared and slapped me lightly every time I did it as a child so I feel guilty like I am doing something wrong when I do it! LOL Also want to yell at people who do it in public like at the doctor's office or worse yet at work sitting next to me! LOL maybe all of that irritation I feel burns calories!!!!

I kinda think this could be true. When we had our big construction business we hired a young guy that became like a son to us over the years. Actually he DID eventually become our son-in-law after he met and married my daughter by my first marriage. This guy was the biggest knee bopper I've ever met in my life...he was NEVER at a desk where his knee wasn't shaking about 100 miles an hour...yep you guessed it..he never had a weight problem even though he ate the WORST possible diet in the world..he was a fidgeter, knee wobbler big time...makes me think there may be something to this...I'm shakin' my knee hyper~speed as I'm typing.. emoticon I can feel the calories spinning on my weight ticker as we speak! emoticon emoticon

Uhm...this is kinda suspicious...I dunno...It is true that more activity = more calorie burning, but...its sounds so easy and good to be true! LOL. Anyways, I will try it at work, as I am sitting down for 6-7 hours, and tapping should help me a bit at least. Thanks for the info!

Any activity would burn calories, but I am suspicious of the stated amount. I wonder if they've also factored in the larger lifestyle of these fidgeters - any nervous-type person I've known not only fidgets, but survives largely on coffee (and sometimes cigarettes), carrots and celery sticks. And at their home they are in continual motion, dusting, shining, and puttering. I think the whole package might explain it....However, hedge your bets and tap those feet under your deak once in a while! : ) Can't hurt, right?

haha, i think i've read this before too. i think the point is that they are saying the skinny folks are skinny because they ARE hyperactive naturally. could be true. personally, i assume these sorts of things are included in the base calories we burn daily just being alive. but if you can make yourself fidget more, who knows?
