INITIAL FITBIT IMPRESSIONS

Saturday, January 26, 2013

I received my new pink Fitbit Zip late yesterday afternoon. Easy to set up, I was surprised at how small it is, yet how much it can calculate! Even with the few hours I had it on in the house, it was amazing how many steps I took! Too bad it doesn't measure spinning as well. (smiling) BTW, clipped to my bra, it has a very secure clip and case.

Seeing actual numbers is eye opening; kinda like the time when I started here on SP and began paying attention to reading calories on food labels. Wow, nothing like seeing those numbers!

This is going to be fun! Wishing all a good weekend.

I think you will enjoy your FitBit. As another Sparkler said, you can compete against yourself from day to day (or you can compare yourself to others on the FitBit site). It helps with combatting the temptation to be sedentary for very long. Get those step in! emoticon

Uh oh.... better go read the blog post I wrote this morning......that little Fitbit is AH-MAZING but addicting! Welcome to the "I just need to run up and down the stairs 5 more times to get my 50 floor badge" club. Or, the "just let me walk 7 more laps around the family room to get my 20,000 step badge" club.

If you like numbers and you like competition, you're going to love your Fitbit!

I better run, I've only got 2 floors in this morning which is only the equivalent of climbing a tall giraffe according to Fitbit.

Good Luck!

Changes During My Time w/ SP

Friday, January 25, 2013

I tracked my package and Fitbit is due to arrive today. So, if I can set it up tonight, I'll start using it tomorrow. Usually my mail arrives late afternoon.

Since this is my SP anniversary week, I've pondered what has changed over these four years.

The biggest change is an overall awareness of what I'm putting in my mouth and how much exercise I'm getting. There is a dramatic difference in the contents of my grocery cart. I read labels more often and pay attention to things I didn't before - serving size, calories, etc.

I guess the list can go on, but suffice it to say that another very important factor during my four years has been YOU. The support of those former sparkers, along with present ones, has been absolutely invaluable. I appreciate it so much.

Have a wonderful day.

(p.s. OMG! I forgot my biggest victory of all... very little (very) sugar - almost none. After a lifetime of being the sugar queen of the universe! Next, caffeine.)

Belt Caper Irony & Misc. Thoughts

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Before 6 years ago, I had the luxury of never thinking about food and weight gain. I had years of collections of belts - all kinds, styles, etc. A belt diva. During this past 6 years, I gave them all away with other things to charity and figured belts are out and I'd never need them again. Fast forward to this week. I'd bought a few pairs of on-great-sale skinny jeans that were a bit loose in the waist. Not going to buy smaller pants, what did I race to Target for yesterday? Yup, a belt. I should have kept a couple. (smiling)

It's funny that I'd completely forgotten about my 4-year spversary until a friend here reminded me. A couple of months ago, I blogged about it being upcoming, but then I forgot about it. Another irony. When I first found this site, I'm the one who wasn't going to do SP because: 1) I'm not a joiner, 2) I don't agree with their drug ads, 3) I don't want to be bothered with details like tracking, 4) It's another gimmicky way to lose weight, 5) whatever else silly stuff passed through my brain.

The irony is that I've become one of SP's biggest supporters. Not only do I tell others about it routinely and bring them here, but I buy the products and participate as much as possible. These four years have been filled with every possible loss and trauma that I could imagine happening in my life, and SP was the one stable thing that helped me keep focus on health and well-being. Even when I was just doing baby steps, at least I was still headed in the right direction. And, of course, I went through the inevitable times when I wanted to "take a break."

Okay, friends, I appreciate your support (from those in the past as well as present) and wish all of you the best.

Why I Caved & Ordered Fitbit

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

I don't jump on bandwagons, so I took my time and heavily weighed whether I'd really use the hefty-priced Fitbit. Honestly, I walk a lot. And I've always wondered what it translates to in miles and calories burned. I want to "step" it up, so I feel that Fitbit will help a lot in motivating me. Ordered a pink one yesterday and awaiting its arrival. Will share my adventure with it. (just the basic one, I don't need sleep monitored)

Have a wonderful day.

(p.s. I've read several blogs about losing their Fitbits. If anyone has special tips to lessen this possibility, please share.)

I keep thinking about the FitBit, but I already have a good pedometer that I forget to wear. It won't help much with tracking biking either, so I can't justify getting one right now for me, but I think it's a great device.

ARCHIMEDESII 1/24/2013 4:29PM

I think the Fitbit is a great little fitness gadget that could help a person be more active. it certainly is motivational. If you like technology or gadgets, you'll enjoy using the Fitbit.

Now, one BIG drawback is the clip. It seems really secure, but it isn't. a couple of weeks ago, I found a fitbit one that someone had lost. The battery was still charged, so I decided to use it and see what all the hype was about. So, I hooked it on my belt and used it for a while. What did I learn ? Like I said, that belt clip is not very secure. I nearly lost it too !!

You'll find it much more secure if you clip it to your shirt pocket or bra. You don't have to keep it on your hip. Although that is one place to keep it.

Long story short, I did happen to find the original owner. Fitbits are easily lost since they are so small and compact.

Enjoy your Fitbit !

CANNIE50 1/23/2013 5:34PM

Yep, wear it on your bra. It's easy when wearing a sports bra. It becomes interesting when I attach it to a regular bra - digging around in cleavage in public to check how many steps I racked up in the grocery store is not such a great look (but I do it anyway!) I enjoy my FitBit. I will be interested to read what you think of it, after you get it and start using it. One area where it is helpful, even for those of us who are already committed to exercising, is by reminding us to stay active throughout the day-it monitors sedentary time which may not be a problem for you, actually, but I can fall into the trap of thinking that I already worked out hard, so I will just sit (and sit and sit). PS Oh, another tip - I place mine with my jewelry when I take it off. Honestly, I think a person would be smart to etch their cellphone number on the back of it, but I haven't actually done that, of course emoticon

JUSTLLAMA 1/23/2013 9:00AM

The only time I've ever lost mine was when I took it off to shower and didn't lay it in it's normal place. So my suggestion? Have ONE spot you put it in when you aren't wearing it.

And I wear mine on my bra too. I read through the Fitbit forum and that seems to be the place the majority of women wear theirs.

Let me know when you get it and we can link up on Fitbit too!

I'm thinking of biting that bullet, too. I'm interested in seeing how it compares to my pedometer and I'm also interested in seeing how much sleep I actually get. Good luck with yours.

I am another "clip it to your bra" person. I've never lost it - but like someone else mentioned - I have left it on the charger and grumped about it for the rest of the day! It hasn't been through the wash, but has been submerged for at least 15 minutes and survived. Ordinary pedometers never recorded the proper number of steps. The Fitbit is not perfect, but it is close to it! Enjoy!

HDHAWK 1/22/2013 7:47PM

I love my Fitbit. I clip it to the front of my bra. I lost it right away when it was hooked to my waistband (but found it thankfully). The clip broke once and the company sent me a new one. I have the ultra. Not sure they are making the exact one I have at this time. Just remember to take it off your bra at night instead of running it through the washer. I've heard a lot of people have done that!

I have the Fitbit One and I use a cheapo pedometer leash I bought on Amazon (less than $3.00 including shipping.) It's working fine. The clip on my FB is tight so far, so I don't really need the leash except that it makes it easier for me to look at the unit during exercise.

I love my Fitbit! It has helped motivate me to go a little further...just one more flight of stairs...just 2/10th of a mile more, etc. I have seen my fitness minutes skyrocket. If you or any other Sparker's want to friend me on Fitbit, I welcome the extra motivation! My URL is http://www.fitbit.com/user/23WSKNR>

I LOVE my fitbit. I've been wearing it since I got it mid-November. It has definately sparked a LOT of otivation in me. Where I used to think hitting the gym was enough for the day I know run or rebound on my work breaks and pace around the house at night. For me you can't put a price on that kind of motivation. Or maybe you can and it's $99, HA!

I ordered the expensive one,and what little I got to use it, I loved it. Unfortunately I lost it on the third day I had it. I would like to get another, but I am afraid of losing it again! I was thinking about maybe super gluing a cord to it and wearing it around my neck. Or may ordering a different type, like the jawbone that i could wear on my wrist. I will be looking forward to how you like yours.

I have been thinking about ordering one & like you have delayed due to the price. I keep buying the cheap pedometers and end up throwing them away due to their not working properly or losing them as they won't stay attached to my waistband. Will be looking forward to your reviews.
