The ER Reminder

As though I need a reminder when I'm a regular member of SP, the ultimate reinforcer, my recent visit to the emergency room shook me awake further.

I brought someone into the ER recently and, as a helper, was able to sit there while waiting and observe. It reminded me that the decisions I make today - both large and small - may help me stay healthy in the future.

I also had an interesting short conversation with a nurse about water. He said that the first thing most patients need when they arrive in the ER is fluids. That, when asked if they drank water that day, they say yes and proceed to list coffee and soda. He said many think that as long as they drink liquids, that counts as water.

Several years ago, I heard a MD on the radio talk about just how important water really is - going into specifics that were astounding as to diseases that eventually thrive in bodies that are relatively arid. Since then, I have been a preacher of sorts reminding friends and family to drink drink drink.

    Yes, so many patients are dehydrated when they come to the ER--both adult and children. Soda pop is not helping the problem either. I put my foot down and told me husband that soda is no longer allowed in the house. He and my girls drink it like water. If I drink it, my pain level soars to a 10!!!

    I agree! Low-grade chronic dehydration can cause multiple problems. It's so dry in Phoenix, Arizona I try to get at least 64 ounces of water a day.

    I know water is one of the things I almost always recommend to my clients at work. Nine times out of ten, they are slightly dehydrated and the boost of water cures what ails them. Thanks for the great reminder!

    I always thought that by drinking my 8 8-ounce glasses of water that I was doing well. Unfortunately I have been reading that obese people like me need to actually drink half their body weight in ounces. So I've been trying to drink more. 9 glasses is about my max so far.

    You are so right on about water. I almost lost my mother a couple of years ago when she took a bad fall and broke both her legs at 65. All she could do is really just sit there in bed she didn't drink enough water, because she couldn't just get up and hit the toilet with two broken legs. This was in the middle of summer too, Will needless to say another 911 call and a visit to the ER for being severly dehydrated. The doctor told her she could have DIED!! She drinks nothing but water to this day! I preach to everyone how important water is. Now i have to practice it!! emoticon

    Drinking water is something I struggle with every day. I just started taking a quart water bottle (even has all the ounce demarkations on it) and am forcing myself to swap one of me large diet cokes from McDonalds with that.

Banishing (almost) the Scale

I never even owned a scale in my life until four years ago, when I embarked on this weight loss adventure. I'd never gained weight and never even thought about it; thus, no need for a scale.

Okay, I bought a scale in October 2009. The scale served as one of several ways to mark the progress (or lack thereof). However, in 2013, I'll use it - maybe - twice a month to track my loss and make sure I'm going in the right direction. There comes a point when you realize how easy it would be for those numbers to drive you nuts. My famous story is how I recently varied 6 lbs in the course of a mere 4 hours!!! And that was with nothing happening in-between to affect the scale's outcome! So, I refuse to let the scale rule.

    I don't think the scale rules me - but I am addicted to the darn thing. What I read on it each morning doesn't affect my feelings or behavior.... but I have to know the numbers! The program I am following actually wants a daily weigh in for several weeks, then reduces the readings to once a week. That is going to be difficult emoticon

    this morning 157.5 was going to blog about my my pound and a half weight loss then after supper and gym got back on guess what 159 what the i quit the scale too plus what i ate before scale i coffee cocunut milk and i sugar i veggie burger i large cup of tea, 10 almonds for snack lunch was turkey one piece of cheese on 90 calorie flatbread with mustard and lettuce. and plain greek yorgurt with blueberrieswow that would make you gain two pounds lol hate hate hate the scale this after going to the gym for two weeks straight blah,lol

    I used to weigh in twice a week. Now I weigh in every other Saturday. I was just getting too emotional about the number and I have conciously decided to stop micro-managing my weight loss.

    I agree completely! I think twice a year is good. Anymore than that and it can drive you insane! I think it puts more stress on us than needs to be. I read an article once about many of the SP staff. Most, if not all of them, don't use the scale. Even Coach Nicole doesn't nor SP Coach Jen. Most of them either measure or just go by how their clothes are fitting. emoticon emoticon

    Spot on! I know from Science experiments that the rising and falling of barometric pressure, and the amount of humidity, can change what something appears to weigh.

Seriously, I don't have "lucky" numbers, but I DO like Friday the 13th. Feel a good vibe with that number. I believe we make our own luck.

    Go for the gusto in 2013. There are only 2 Friday the 13th in it though so you have to make your own luck for the other 363! emoticon I also believe that what you do sets the scene for "luck" or "fortune" or "success" to visit.

HAS IT REALLY BEEN 4 SPARKING YEARS?

I started this healthy adventure on my own four years ago in October, but found SP by accident in January a few months later.

These four years have been full of major bumps in the road for me, but logging into this site has helped me reinforce better food and exercise choices. And being more healthy has helped me to cope much better with stress.

As for the weight loss, I'm about five lbs away from goal. I feel good. These four years have flown by!

Farmaggedon - Documentary

Last week, a sparkfriend blogged about the documentary "Hungry for Change" which is available on Netflix. I watched that and it was another helpful film (like Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead). I noticed "Farmeggedon" while searching for the other one, and watched it yesterday.
Wow, sometimes I wish I didn't know so much about how the food industry is highjacking our health. If you get a chance, check it out.

I have been very careful about the foods I buy. I try to go organic when at all possible and buy fruits and vegetables only.
