4 Years Ago On Columbus Day

Sunday, October 07, 2012

Four years ago, on Columbus Day 2008, I embarked on a new adventure (just as Columbus did). For the very first time in my life, I was putting myself on a diet.

That's right, very first time. A spoiled brat in the sense that I had a lifelong ability to eat any quantity of food and never gain even a lb, about 8 years ago (2004), that began to change. I was working more and more, and having no time left over, exercising less and less. Added to that were multiple losses including many deaths of loved ones that created a lot of emotional overload. And the icing on the proverbial cake was the big hormonal change; in some ways, tougher than puberty. (smiling)

But it took me four years to process and own that my body was no longer thin and svelte. When I looked in the mirror, I saw the previously thin person. When I saw a picture of myself, I reasoned that cameras add several lbs. When I bought larger sized clothing, I commented one time to the cashier that they were manufacturing clothing smaller and smaller for the same sizes! (smiling) No I wasn't in denial. It was a total disconnect from reality which was a complete departure from my usually-sharp self-awareness.

The AHA moment occurred when I met my now dearly-departed cousin in Las Vegas for a few days. We were at the Madame Toussand (sp?) wax museum and I was in the wedding dress they provide to "marry" George Clooney (BTW, I don't even like him, this museum was my cousin's idea). When I saw the photo of me in that wedding dress, the big AHA moment hit me over the head. Wow, look at me!

So, on Columbus Day '08 I started Nutrisystem. I was on that for about 2.5 months and lost about 30 lbs. It was the first diet of my life, and I used that period of time to learn about portion control, and all of the other healthy tips that I continue to this day (or do my best to continue).

Then, the following January ('09), I found Sparkpeople. I've had a tough time during these few years in that I've lost so many more people who were near and dear to me. And many many other bumps in the road. But Sparkpeople has helped me to stay on-track through the darkest of times. I've been on a "forever" plateau that, at times, has made me not care about my doing "Endless Shrimp" at Red Lobster. But overall, I have about 12 lbs to go to be done and start maintaining.

Above all, I want to thank all of the sparkfriends throughout the years - some no longer on this site - who've helped me with their comments and support. I send all of you the biggest cyber bear hug possible with great affection and appreciation.

Spark on!

How time flies when we're not having fun! I know there have been a lot of difficult times in these past 4 years but I also know you have had some triumphs...coffee and sugar come to mind. You aren't the same person I met here way back when, thankfully I'm not either and I know we will continue to evolve until we've lost those last pounds and moved on to maintenance.

Gas Prices ($4.59 & rising) & MOD

Friday, October 05, 2012

On Monday, I filled my tank (vehicle, not my body's) with $4.15 gal. Two days later, $4.59 and rising daily. In a week, they are saying there will be lines and some stations closing. This is in San Diego. Every time gas goes up like this, they use the excuse of a refinery fire. We are being gouged, plain and simple.

As for being MOD, wow, ME???? Most days, I barely motivate myself, let alone others!(smiling)
But thank you to those who voted for me, or however it's selected.

I am on my way down for the count now. Weigh in indicated significant progress and I'm determined to make this my final round. About 12 lbs to go now.

Have a happy day.

The midwest got gouged for awhile because of some refineries in IL and the price is finally going back down, but we weren't nearly as bad as the news is saying CA will be. At least it is incentive to drive less, carpool more, take public transport more, walk more, or do with less (when possible). Everyone loves their independence, but sometimes it comes with a price.

I hope this only lasts for a short time and/or government gets involved and helps somehow. $6/gallon gas in the US is just crazy. But in the meantime, you have incentive to try other forms of transportation.

A refinery fire really can make a difference in price, especially Richmond. California requires special gas, and most refineries in the country don't refine to California requirements.

What About Chitosan?

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Yesterday, I stumbled across this as a "fat blocker." Upon further research, there seemed to be no conclusive evidence that it "blocks" or absorbs fat. Anyone have any experience with this?

Member Comments About This Blog Post:

1_AMAZING_WOMAN 10/1/2012 2:06PM

From what I've heard it doesn't block a lot of fat, though it may give you a feeling of fullness. It can also give you a bowel blockage if you don't drink a LOT of water with it. Also, if you have any allergy to fish or shellfish then this is a NO-NO. And even if you don't have an allergy to fish or shellfish, over time you can develope such an allergy by taking this every day, several times a day. Same goes with glucosamine/chondroitin (the allergy factor, that is), but I am taking that anyway cause otherwise I am in so much joint pain I can't walk.

Great inquiry. I would use caution. The only thing I'm aware of that blocks fat is my mouth-LOL.

Body builder's as a group are always looking for ways to get "ripped" for competitions believe me, the only successful way to lose fat is through calorie reduction and exercise which increases metabolism. See Bodybuilding.com - a free site.

USP Labs has a product "OxyELITE Pro" that body builders "sometimes" use to increase their metabolism to get that ripped look. You will know it is working as you will get a flushed feeling as one gets when taking niacin tablets. Most fat burning products cause your metabolism to increase; but, recognize that to do this your heart has to speed up - even while at rest!

One can easily increase heart rate by not sitting down. For me, I'll stay the coarse with healthy food choices and friendly exercise. Hope this helps. May God bless your journey to good health, Earl

Oops, clicked I like this blog instead of leave a comment...not that I don't like it but that's not what I meant...anyway....

Years ago when I was in the searching for a miracle mode, I had bought a book about this both as a fat blocker and a cholesterol lowering product. I thought it appeared to have some merit so I went out and got some and tried it....I don't believe it did a thing really at least not more than any other fiber introduction...that's how it is supposd to work basicly so for the same benefits...metamucil would do the same for far less $.

Anyway, though I still am intrigued when I hear of some new thing...like coffee bean extract...the latest one...I no longer go there.

I have no experience with it, but just read a list in the 'Eat to Live' book of things Dr. Fuhrman says don't work, and Chitosan is mentioned specifically. His conclusion is the it doesn't work. Sorry I can't give you the page number as I'm reading it on my kindle.

YIKES! Too Many Smoothies!

Thursday, September 27, 2012

When I started juicing about three months ago, I lost a lb a day, but then switched to making smoothies when I got the new blender. This includes making a v-8 type of blend.

Well, I guess I overdid the smoothie thing. For the first time in weeks, I brought out my old friend - the scale - and yikes! I'm up a bunch.

I researched Medifast, thinking that I'd kickstart my metabolism. In next blog, I'll write about what I found and decided not to do it.

Wishing all a happy day.
