I am out west, Arizona and we were 119o here in Havasu. I use to live in Santa Maria, Calif. Hardly anyone had A/C. It was really hard when we would get the 90o there. It was more humid, and we just weren't acclimated to HOT. That being said, I'd sure love to live there now, instead of here haha.

Have to Go Back to Vet Again

Monday, July 09, 2012

On Saturday, I'll be bringing Harry back to the vet. This time, it's for a recheck on his problem eye infection. It's responding slowly, but he's showing several signs of relief and progress. And this time, I think I'll be less nervous knowing that others have written about their cats making a lot of noise en route also.

Once he's there, he is such a good boy. But he's like a child who knows he can get away with throwing a tantrum with mom, but not in front of others.

I really like this vet and can breathe easier that she's thorough and less expensive. I couldn't continue with the former vet on an affordability basis. The cost per visit and perscription was too high and unrealistic.

Wishing all a happy day.

Put 3 pissed off cats into 1 carrier and you'll decide that the best vet is the one who is closest to you! I am just so bad about making appts for them that I figure it's just easier this way. (Although it is always a bunch of fun trying to re-carrier them when we go to leave the vet!)

Cats do like to voice their displeasure when on the road. (I think it is to discourage us from taking them) My son's cat had to enure a 5 hour road trip when he moved out of state. The howling was unbearable.
Over the years there has only been one cat that we have had that actually liked car rides... but we had taken her frequently as a kitten. Other drivers would be surprised when they saw her calmly looking out the window.
I'm glad that Harry is improving. emoticon

Jesse, sorry to hear that Harry hasn't been well. Hope the checkup is good. Ms Molly is very quiet going to the vet but PolyDactyl starts to care the minute you put her in the car. By the time we get to the vet, her little pads are wet with sweat. It always kills me to take her but like Harry, the minute she's there, shes' fine and starts purring.

hugs....Mary Anne

Does your kitty stand in the middle of the room and essentialy shout at you to look at him several times during the day? And then turn his nose up at whatever you put in his food bowl that he loved just an hour ago? That is what my son's cat does to him. The cat is pushing 18. I'm thinking that it won't be long before he will be gone and I'll miss him.

It is great to find a vet that you like, who is resonable and thorough. emoticon

Jesse, most cats do not like traveling, so they are very vocal about it. Just in case you have any doubt about their feelings. LOL All seven of my cats cry and try to get out of the carrier on the way to the vet. One did not out of the carrier and it took us over an hour to get the cat out from under the car seat. My hands were all cut up by the time the cat got out.

I am very glad you found a good vet that is fair in her cost. I travel a full hour one way to a vet because of her rates and her medical skills. All my animals love her.

How is your kitty doing?

Yeah, moving wa an experience I'll not soon forget.

Ordeal at the Vet's

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Yesterday's vet visit was, well, let's say - a little less than a nightmare. But we'll start with the end results first.

Harry's medicated eyedrops have already begun working. Ulcerated infected eyes seem to be in his future as he doesn't have proper tearduct drainage and it all pools no matter how often I clean those beautiful eyes. So, that's the great news. That he's already begun to feel better.

I'll just leave it at that, rather than rehashing the difficulties. Suffice it to say that the two hours I spent there were mostly wait time due to medical emergencies of other pets that came in.

Wishing all a wonderful day.

(p.s. Everyone raved about how well-behaved Harry was. Which made me laugh because enroute was a nightmare with his loud crying. But it'll be easier next time since I now know this new vet, and like her a lot. Also, she is less expensive than my former vet, although a little farther to drive.)

Glad the meds are helping - it's never 'fun' to take any of my cats to the vet. They all hate the car and I swear it's a miracle the police haven't pulled me over for excessive noise or suspicion of cat torture! Hope things go better in the future and best of health to Harry!

While it's never fun to wait, here's how I tend to look at it: if I had an emergency, I'd hope my vet would put me first in line, too.

Sorry it was not a good experience.

Anxiety Over Going to the Vet

Saturday, July 07, 2012

My cats are indoor, shy guys. Whenever I have to go to the vet, it is a major ordeal for me. I am bringing Harry in for his eye problem in about an hour and it's to a new vet. I feel anxious over driving with him even though he's in his carrier. He's such a shy guy and is so fearful of these infrequent trips. When he cries enroute, it makes me nervous. Silly, I know, and I just have to put my big girl pants on and concentrate that his eyeball needs help and this is the only way to get it.

Does anyone else go through this at pet-to-vet times?

I'm not sure it it'll help Harry or not, or even if he'll sit still for it but....

Make yourself a cup of tea. :-)

Seriously - soak a teabag for about 3 minutes. Semi-squeeze the water out and let it get cool to the touch. Place it on his eye. It will draw out a lot of the infection and stuff that can build up in there. I know it's worked wonders when mine got pink eye. Or even sometimes with allergy season theirs will get all red and aggravated. It works and it's safe for them. Regular old black tea - the kind of bags you buy in the big boxes at the store - nothing special.

Works great for humans too at the end of a hard day or when your allergies act up and make you want to claw your eyes out.

When my cats are crying while riding in the car I don't feel very good about it either. i think that is a natural emotion with our babies. Also, going to a new vet is scary for them and us because we don't know how they will be with our pride and joy also!

I'm so sorry Harry's not well but glad his eye drops are helping.

One of my cats, Tyler, howls and yowls at an ear splitting pitch the entire time he is in the carrier. A few years ago, when I broke my ankle and couldn't drive, my nephew who had only just received his first learning permit, came over to drive us all to the vet (me, 3 cats and my son). It was early March, there was a snow storm, my nephew was already extremely nervous about driving...and Tyler did his yowling thing. It was constant, the entire 20 minute drive each way. It was freaking me out and I was just the passenger. I felt so bad for my nephew but he got through the experience with only minimal emotional scarring LOL.

I'm not really nervous, but tbe whole thing is just draining. Simba just howls the entire way - and is then perfectly happy at the vet. He HATES being shut into/out of something. Unfortunately he now sometimes pees in tbe car, too, which is very frustrating. And he needs to go every couple of months.

Hopefully you're recovered now!

My Roscoe lets out his first cry when we get to the elevator (going to the car), and then a few on the way there. Once I walk into the vet's office with him, though, he's full into "I'm pretending I'm not here" mode. By that time, he has got himself fully UNDER the bath towel I had on the floor of the cat carrier, and he sits there, absolutely still and silent, all the time we're waiting to get called in for his appointment. I'm sure that he thinks because he is covered up I will think he isn't there. Too sweet! :) I hope your appointment with your kitty went went today, Jesse.

With six cats we have six trips to the vet and each cat has a slightly different persona. Three are quiet and well mannered. Two are noisy but calm. The last one is the old man of the group and he starts meowing or maybe I should say meyowling the minute he gets put in the carrier. I think he can be heard two counties away.

Needless to say, it is always a fun trip. emoticon
