Sugar On 60 Minutes Last Night

Monday, April 02, 2012

I don't usually watch TV, but a friend invited me to watch 60 minutes with him as he's just waking up to the sugar syndrome. He was blown away by the studies' findings, and I told him that I've been telling him the same stuff for ages. (selective hearing?) A recent blood test revealed pre-diabetes range and he's drastically cut back his imbibing of soda and other demons (desserts). I think he got to the problem just in time.

I've continued to try to impart other things I've learned from SPark and elsewhere, but until he hears it from the experts, it'll probably continue to fall on deaf ears. But I'll still continue trying cause it's tough to watch loved ones in the process of making themselves sick.

As for me, I don't crave sugar anymore. It's funny, I have more trouble fighting caffeine urges even though I didn't really like it that much. Fortunately, it's only occasional urges that bug me and they are getting less frequent. I think I'll always track my progress as it makes me proud after a lifetime of struggling with them

Wishing all a good day.

I also was pre-diabetes and cured the problem by eating low carb and staying away from sugar! I will have to look up that 60 min show..

I am so much happier without sugar and eating low carb. You are doing great on your program of healthy eating.

I was impressed that 60 Minutes had Dr. Lustig on. Your friend was probably more receptive to the story because of you. No so much deaf ears, but denial ears. But when something comes to our attention often enough we will pay attention to it.
Keep spreading your Sparks.

It's amazing how hearing something from an independent third party seems to carry so much more weight than coming from a friend (or spouse). Glad he got the message!

Congratulations on breaking free from sugar cravings. It's a constant struggle for me. Most days I win, but somedays I give in.
emoticon emoticon emoticon Hopefully one day, I'll be able to kick the habit for good.

Just from my own experience, I think carbs in general are the problem. I was diagnosed with diabetes in October, and I've never had a sweet tooth - even before I was diagnosed, I think the only times I ate dessert were at holidays and birthdays when I thought it would have been rude not to. However, I've always used carbs as comfort food.

If you read Dr. Mercola's web site, he says SODA is the real problem as there are 10 tsp of sugar in one can. Roby Mitchell, M.D. whose web site is www.drfitt.com has lots of help on Metabolic syndrome/Insulin Resistance as sugar/starches raise our Insulin and then we have Gherlin, the hunger hormone pumped out by the stomach. Dr. Mitchell is very interesting. He had Advanced Prostrate Cancer and cured himself with diet and exercise.

APRIL FOOLS!

Okay, I admit that was a lousy joke, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to practice that statement. Hopefully, I'll make it come true in the near future.

I say this at the start of every month when I ponder how quickly the year is flying by - I can't believe it's April already.

Wishing all a happy day.

I Didn't Win The Lottery Tonight

Saturday, March 31, 2012

The huge jackpot numbers were just announced. Although I'm not a regular lottery player, I did catch some of the fever and bought a few tickets. If nothing else, it goes to help this financially unsound state.

to Dream or not to Dream
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of not winning the lottery fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? Not buy a ticket and wonder what if;

you and a million other dreamers
ah....maybe next time

I don't expect to win anything, but I like to spend the rare $5 for the daydreaming I can do of what I would do "if".

I've found that eating moderately consistently is what drives me, not being thin. Extra food is not worth ruining my real appetite. Eating well has to be its own reward. I crave being free of the tyranny of thinness. emoticon
