Montana Teacher Disappears After Leaving For Her Run (headline on MSN website)

Monday, January 09, 2012

I sometimes email SPfriends who hike and/or run in isolated places and ask how they manage their safety in a crime-filled world. Almost all of them respond that they are not concerned, and that one can't live in fear, etc.

Wow, my city and neighborhood have high crime stats (I get daily police blotter emails), even though they recently announced that crime is down. Well, folks, they just early-released oodles of parolees on top of what we already have in CA.

I hope all will at least keep safety in-mind and take precautions (cell phones, letting people know your route and anticipated time home, etc.)

Wishing all a good day.

    Awful about the Montana Teacher...
Regarding cell phones, recently in the park behind my house there was a guy there who was rolling joggers soley for their cell phones.

He used a bicycle to make his getaway.

I, sadly, have to do most of my runs indoors because of crazy things like this poor woman in Montana. Sad.

The missing Montana woman is related to the blogger from Shut Up and Run so I heard about her dissapearance when I checked in there this morning. Very scary!

I carry pepper spray (more to fend of dogs) and try to always wear my RoadID and tell my boyfriend how long I'll be gone/where I plan to go and I have my phone when I go out for long runs on the weekend. But my shorter lunch time runs during the week I usually go with minimal gear and don't tell my coworkers where I'll be.

I AM concerned with safety - in fact I was asking about the safety of the path we took sat if I were alone - but I do agree you can't live in fear. This is actually billed as one of the safest small towns in the country (not Albany, but the town outside I live in) - but bad things happen everywhere.

I do carry a cell phone & id & a little money.

I always am very careful when I go out. Even if it is to go shopping. They can be lurking in a parking lot also.
Keep safe, friend!

Thank you, I'm just beginning running and I do not go alone. My husband would not be comfortable with me running alone even if I wanted to do it alone. I run in my neighborhood which I don't feel uneasy about at all but I am prudent...running with 2 or more and with my cell phone.

Thank you for the timely reminder - we must be alert and have a safety plan.

Could This Be True? They Changed Cookie Monster's Name?

Sunday, January 08, 2012

I heard the other day that Sesame Street changed Cookie Monster's name to Veggie Monster. Now, if that's true, it's too bad that we can't even enjoy him singing, "C is for cookie, it's good enough for me" anymore. He was lovable. C'mon, Sesame Street, bring our Cookie Monster back!

Did they turn him from blue to green too?

Changing cookie monster's name is even too PC/health conscious for me! I watched Sesame Street as a child and never thought cookies were a substitution for wholesome food...

Way too far. Couldn't he have a brother or sister be Veggie Monster? I don't want to tell my kids (all in their 40s) about this. emoticon

How do you change an icon like that.
Some things are a little too over the top.

Seeing cookie monster consume his cookies made me more mindful on how I consumed my cookies.

For me, veggie monster would look more like that Weight Watchers Hungry Monster.

Wow I hope it's not true, he was always my favorite but I don't remember eating any extra cookies because of him....maybe made more crumbs lol. They could have given him a wife named veggie monster and taught balance maybe lol emoticon

Listed Items Only When Grocery Shopping

Saturday, January 07, 2012

My Week 2 focus topic - one of three - is to grocery shop only the items I list before going to the store. In fact, I read a book of tips reently that suggested not to go into any type of store w/o a list. And to stick ONLY to what's on that list.

It's great advice. However, I went food shopping this morning and I had no list. I shop by memory, first checking what food is already at home, and then knowing the stuff I cannot buy (sugary treats, cheese, etc.) Going to try to start making a list, and checking it twice.

Hope the first week of 2012 has been good to you. And remember to be good to yourself.

I'm a list maker, but my husband is not. I figure if we add a little extra to our cart it's fine as long as it's healthy. We are both getting better at looking at the ingredients on something before we put it in the cart.

I started doing list grocery shopping when I moved out on my own - it seriously helps me save a lot of money! On the days I forget my list, it's like a free-for-all in my shopping cart, and my wallet!

I always have a list but occasionally get something "off list". Usually it's something healthy, though or something I forgot to put on the list.

I almost always have a list, but will add to it. It can be quite difficult when you are at least half an hour from town and forget something. emoticon

I usually have a list but ALWAYS end up buying something extra that looks neat to try!
I hope you can stick to your guns with this plan!

Focus of the Week-Weeks 1 & 2

Friday, January 06, 2012

I've decided that each week I will set a focus behavior to concentrate on. This past week was portion control and another smaller, personal one. I have done fairly well, but am going to focus on them again for Week #2.

Additionally, I am going to add one more. Grocery shopping. Listed items only. NO DEVIATIONS. During this month celebrating my 3rd sparkversary, I find that I need to reinforce all of the basics.

Might do this all year. Haven't decided.

Wishing all a happy day.

Reflections Upon Three-Year SParkversary

Thursday, January 05, 2012

This month marks three years on SP and I have to say that I've given back as much as possible. Bought products, brought in new members, spread the word, etc. So, with that said, I feel a lot of gratitude.

As I read newbie blogs and smile at all of the familiar thoughts, feelings and expectations that are there in the beginning, there is a lot to be said.

One thing that sticks out right now, though, is that I used to think it was a cliche when more experienced members would remind me that this is a journey. I thought, sure, but I just wanna get these extra lbs off and then blow this town. (smiling)

However, it IS indeed a journey of much more than just lbs lost. Forming new, healthier behaviors is part of the adventure and one that is such an investment in the good health that I've continued to enjoy. How can I possibly expect all of the lifelong behaviors to change in a mere three years?

So, this is a journey that you can either relax and enjoy, or fight yourself every step of the way when the inevitable setbacks occur.

I vote for relax and enjoy. Sure, it takes work. But it's sooooo worth it.

Wishing all a wonderful day.
