Miscellaneous Observations About Sparkers

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

During my three-year adventure on the SP site, I've enjoyed meeting people from so many different backgrounds and circumstances. How interesting it is to "meet" people with one common goal - better health.

Some of the handles are obvious, but others make me wonder what they mean. I sometimes think, how did they arrive at that screen name for themselves? In the past, I had sent in the idea for the SP article on how negative names affect our self-image. It's always a pleasure to see a sparker change their name from something negative to a more uplifting moniker.

And as different as each of us is, so are the blogs here. Some write about nothing but health topics. Others have never even mentioned health. Some write daily jokes. Others write religious quotes. There's certainly an assortment to choose from.

I've also noticed that the sparkers who have had the most success in losing weight are usually the ones with the fewest award points. That is, they've been busy moving, rather than sitting at the computer accumulating points (of which I'm guilty - smiling - although I DO move quite a bit).

Wishing all a good day.

Hey, I never thought about that points correlation. I'm guilty of trying to collect points sometimes myself...and more for articles and blogs than for fitness. Not good. Thanks for the inspiration!

I always hate spinning more than a 2 or 3 on the Spark Wheel because I don't feel like I've "earned" those points. I always thought it was weird that I didn't like that... shouldn't I want more points? But, I basically believe the same thing you did. I should get points for doing what is healthy- exercising and eating right.

My SP name is my public pagan name. SkyeFyr. It was a combination of my (at the time) Native American beliefs and my British roots (for spelling). It basically means lightening. My "whole" name is SkyeFyr NightSong - because of my love of summer storms at night. I'm usually the idiot standing out in them getting drenched to the skin.

Interesting observation! I care about logging my fitness but not about Sparkpoints or trophies. I have limited time and a slow Internet connection so I have to use Spark for the most important things first...logging food, followed by exercise, and then, hopefully blogging and encouraging Sparkfriends. I agree that it's more important to be up and active than spending TOO much time online, no matter what we're doing.

I go thru phases of inputting my exercise . . . then not inputting it . . . one reason I don't have as many points as I could.

You and me both have the same thoughts lol

I know exactly what you mean, I would rather see results on by body instead of the poionts lol

So, I go through periods of not listing my fitness minutes and then I figure why shouldn't I list my fitness minutes? I do them, I will take any credit for doing the fitness minutes I can get lol

My Status Thread is Like the Movie "Ground Hog Day"

Sunday, December 11, 2011

I crack myself up with my thread. Seems as though it's always "Day 1 of no sugar" or "Day 2 of no caffeine." Maybe one of these days I'll get past five months of no sugar that I recently did and felt so much better w/o.

Wishing all a fun day.

Hey, 5 mos is so much better than most of us could do! You're my hero when it comes to sugar deprivation. :-)

Today was the start of the "holiday food" at the office. I so don't want to be here around temptation like that. After his past weekend it's so much harder than usual.

You know repetition is not always a bad thing. Look at all the days you have been without sugar or caffeine this year. It is much better than not even giving it a go. Give yourself credit for what you have done. What does the overall picture look like?
I think you are doing great, you are staying focused and keeping your attention on moving forward toward your goals.

You can do this. I do my fasting from junk food in three day cycles. It is easier for me to cope with the small time frame. Often I go more than three days, but just knowing I can have a little treat, makes it easier. Then I am back on another three days.

The Case of the Abandoned Elliptical

Saturday, December 10, 2011

I was so excited when I'd gotten my new elliptical a couple of years ago. However, I never bonded with it; the motion isn't comfortable for me and I don't like it.

It's in my bedroom so that I can hop on it whenever I want. I haven't wanted. (smiling) But I'm going to give it another go instead of hanging misc things on it. Just tired of looking at it. Either use it, or lose it.

Wishing all a fun Sunday.

You could always throw it on ebay and put the money towards something else that you might like better / use more. Although I have to admit that the primary reason my treadmill is in the living room is so that it COULDN'T become an additional hanging space. :-)

You would think that all ellipticals feel the same when you're on them but they certainly don't. I tried everyone they had at Sears before finally picking the Sole I have now. It was the most comfortable for me.
See how it goes and if you still aren't comfortable then let it go.

Thoughts Are Seeds We Plant...

Friday, December 09, 2011

...and if you plant crab apples, no need to expect to harvest Golden Delicious.

I read this in a book I'm reading last night and I really want to stop planting crab apples. This past four years' deaths/losses and assorted road bumps have unravelled me and I think I'm about done with the grief and ready to finally start putting back the pieces of my life.

Wishing all a good day.

That quote is so right about what we plant.
Dealing with losses is is a matter of perspective. When my mom's heart failed... my sis choose to focus on what she had lost.... I focused on the gifts my mom brought into my life. Yes I miss her, but she will always be with me as she is a part of me.
Thank you for sharing this quote... I need to be more mindful about what I am planting.

Yes, good words and thoughts are the only way to live this great life we have been given from above from the Father of lights by way of the cross of Jesus who loves us so much.

You are so valued and loved and appreciated as you live the life you have been given each new day.

Enjoy your weekend by enjoying who you are in Jesus.

Just When I Thought I was Going to Quit SP, Friends Pulled Me Through

Thursday, December 08, 2011

And they didn't even know they had done that. Honestly, I go through this periodically even though I enjoy and support SP in so many ways.

Sometimes I just want to quit and not be bothered due to many factors. But then a bunch of SPfriends - new and former - provide such valuable input and feedback that I'm glad I don't follow these impulsivities. These friends do not overtly say do this or that, but they are just there. Sharing their own slice of life, providing strength by sharing how they are doing things.

I'm not a joiner and always rebel against my own best good. Well, not always, but frequently. I hate to have to log in and do things every day. But it's also the very thing that has kept me on-track. If it ever comes down to having to take some time off, I'll do that rather than signing off for good.

Wishing all a wonderful evening.

Glad you are hanging around! I think of quitting too, but it's really worth it to hang in there.

BTW....I'm watching "Forks Over Knives" on Netflix as I'm Sparking right now. I'm sure you've seen it. I've been eating about 90% "Eat to Live"....still use olive oil, and eat free range, organic eggs. Also, have one cup of coffee in the morning. Otherwise.....it's all Eat to Live!

I go through the same thing as you.

As a matter of fact I did quit once last August for three or four day and just had to come back.

Now, when i get to the point of wanting to quit I just quit doing anything on or with sparkpeople except for logging in.

I do log in every single day even if that is all I do and then slowly but surely I get back in the swing until the next break.

Yes, sparkpeople really is good for me and I am glad that we are all here and doing what we all do best which is caring for one another.

Have a great week slimmerjesse emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
