Ordered Emergency Supplies. And, My Juicer Arrives Today!

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

After a few weeks of researching products and making sure I got the best quality at the lowest prices, I placed the order last night for emergency supplies. After the huge power outage a few weeks ago, I realized that although my preparation for these situations is good, there is still a lot to go. I ordered a small generator, lantern, mini-stove, emergency kit for vehicle, crank radio for vehicle and another one as a back-up at home. It was a big order, but an investment in safety. I also started building a cash reserve at home, which I'd never paid much attention to.

My new juicer is a day early in its scheduled arrival (at my doorstep today) and I'll do something uncharacteristic for me - read the manual! (smiling) I also bought a juicing book. I have no idea what I'm doing, so this is going to be an adventure. Curious about what to do with the pulp. I've started researching it, but so far, not much info. I'm sure the book will cover that also.

Wishing all a fun day.

just curious....which juicer did you decide to buy? Of course the one I want is almost $1,000. Given that I've never juiced before and may not like it either, it would make since for me to get something cheaper....ya think?????

We use the pulp in our garden for composting. We juice EVERY day. Check out my latest blog on juicing.

I love your emergency cookie you are! I actually bought a book about being totally self sustaining off the grid. Have I read it yet...Heck no...but it's there and on my 'to read' list...I think I'd better get to it quickly! I have NO faith in the government, or for that matter the society of today. I like the wind up radio idea and we already have a generator living in FL. Of course to run that you have to have you want a bunch of gas cans lying around that isn't the most reliable item...I wonder if they have solar generators....hey that would be a great item to invent wouldn't it? emoticon

Good for you for getting your emergency kit ready. That was a big wake up in lots of ways. Hopefully we don't have to endure that, or worse, again in the future. Have fun with your juicer!

Most books don't offer much help other than "tossing" the pulp. If you compost it's a great use for it, but otherwise.... (It gets stinky fast if you try and put it in a sealed bag to get to a friend and don't see that friend quickly!)

Just be careful with lots of straight beet juice. Too much and it freezes your voice muscles for a little bit. It doesn't hurt, but it's a little scary if you're not expecting it. (Although hubby thought it was quite entertaining once we read that it was "temporary".) Some books warn about it, but some don't. Oh, and if you become addicted to carrot juice and drink enough of it, you get an orange tinge to your skin. (No, I don't have pictures!)

I think the pulp makes great compost if you don't have any other use for it. Your experience has really gotten me thinking about what kind of emergency supplies I need too.

Interesting----about the juicer, I've had two kinds; one the pulp was very very wet. I didn't like this because I wanted the juice, what's a juicer for? The other one produced pulp that was extremely dry and we just threw it away. I've never found one like that one before, and if I do, I'm going to get it! I, too, have started to build up a cash reserve for home. I have to laugh--here in western Montana there are people who are preparing for armaggedon, it seems, and I won't go THAT far, although sometimes I wish I was 'off the grid'!

Decided to Buy A Juicer. First time Trying.

Monday, September 19, 2011

I don't know what I'm doing, so I also ordered a book to go with it. Researched models and got a good one at a low price so that it won't be wasted if I wind up not using it.

But I've wanted to try for a long time now, and that movie I mentioned in last blog really inspired me to go for it.

Will let you know what happens. It's due to arrive on Wednesday and I hope to go get some veggies to try it soon afterwards.

Wishing all a happy day.

The nice thing is that if you didn't spend too much on it you won't feel guilty putting it on a shelf once the "new" wears off. I used to use mine constantly but it's not so often now. But nothing beats the treat of fresh orange juice with breakfast on the weekend! Just remember to wash it out right away if you use citrus fruits. If you don't, the plastic parts start looking a little funky really quick.

I just use my vitamix, which isn't the same as juicing - but don't really have the room for a juicer or the will to clean it! Will be interested in hearing your review.

Fat Sick and Almost Dead (a movie) And, To Juice or Not to Juice?

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Today I watched the documentary by Aussie Joe Cross about his travels while talking to people about their eating habits. He started juicing and his success is impressive. He's also impacted others significantly. If you get a chance to watch this film, it's worth the time.

I've always toyed with the prospect of juicing, but will have to research more about it.

Wishing all a fun day.

I have started juicing. I tried it a couple of years ago, but gave up without really giving it a good try. i have found a basic recipe and really enjoy it. i do have some questions, looking for answers.

Juicing can be fun, but it can also be expensive and time consuming. If you want to start, you have to really look at the kind of juicer you want. You need one with a large mouth - for convenience and to minimize prep time. You also should look at one with a strong enough motor to juice wheat grass, even if you never use it to do that. The stronger motor means that it will last longer. My experience is that they also tend to produce more juice. Also look at what's required for clean up of the machine like is it dishwasher safe. I didn't have a dishwasher when I bought my first juicer and it took me longer to clean the thing than it took me to cut up the fruit/veggies and make the juice.

Just a few things I learned the hard / expensive / time consuming way. :-)

That movie did provoke a lot of thought in me. The movie talked about it being short term. I'm still working on doing the healthy menu thing so I won't go back to bad habits after juicing.

Thighmaster & Blue Man Group

Saturday, September 17, 2011

I've made a new rule for myself. I've decided that, whenever I'm on SP site, I have to use my thighmaster. Sitting here right now with my thighs starting to hurt. Ouch. So, the longer I'm here, the more these thighs will burn. See how it goes? (smiling)

Very excited that I decided today to get a ticket to Blue Man's Group. It'll be my first time, and even when I see the clips, I laugh like mad. Now the dilemma.

I can get an $80 ticket for $40, but that means I have to go downtown alone and walk in the dark to and from the parking lot to the venue. If I get the Sunday matinee ticket instead, it'll be more expensive, but in broad daylight. Sorry, but crime is a concern and I have to be realistic. I think I just answered my own question by writing this out.

Wishing all a fun weekend.

My Plateau ALMOST Did Me In

Friday, September 16, 2011

It's been about three years since I started this journey. Prior to about five years ago, I'd never had a weight issue. But then, tons of things changed. And so did my body. It took me awhile to fully realize, despite buying clothes in larger sizes, that I had too much of the wrong things on my bones - like fat.

Okay, so three years ago I did a couple of months of NutriSystem and after two months took off about 30 lbs during the ensuing six months. Then around 2.5 years ago, I arrived here at SP. Despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to drop any more weight. I have called it my "forever plateau" and it almost did me in. (I will soon blog about my year of emotional eating following the deaths of 10 loved ones in the past four years.)

I started to think, why bother? If I'm not going to lose anything else, why should I keep trying?

Well, there are so many other benefits besides what the scale says. (and I haven't used that in about six months) 1. Staying healthy, 2. Feeling fit, 3. Keeping a routine that resembles a healthy lifestyle, 4. Stress relief through exercising, etc.

I refuse to let this plateau sabotage my efforts. HOORAY FOR ME! (I think I'll now go give myself a big goodie) (A spark goodie, that is.)

Wishing all a great day.

Great attitude. And I'm proof of why we don't go away. When I stopped trying I gained a ton of weight. Okay, maybe not a real ton, but some days it feels like it.

You're always a winner in my book!
