Thoughts & Prayers for Tornado Victims

Thursday, April 28, 2011

To all of those who've been impacted by the amazingly awful tornadoes, my deepest sympathy is felt in these tough times. It's such a helpless feeling to not be able to do anything after the ravages of mother nature.

Take care and prayers are with you.

Reminders from Animals of The Lightness of Being & Quote I Found

Monday, April 18, 2011

This weekend I exercised my hiney off. In the wonderful sunshine, in a field surrounded by nature. A couple of people had their dogs out and as I walked the long loop, I watched these beautiful creatures run and fetch. Reminded me of how I've always liked to move and be active, but how I've stalled out with all the recent losses. It's time to start my engine again.

One dog suddenly just flopped on the ground and rolled around with happiness. I laughed aloud at such a delightful display of joy and unabashed enjoyment of life. It really was fun to watch.

Of course, there are my own furry little brothers - Prince William and Harry - who are puppies in cat bodies. They are rascally dudes who are just in love with life - plain and simple. They remind me that I can (and WILL) reclaim the joy that was usually in my heart before all the deaths of loved ones (10 in the last 3.5 years).

And a quote I found that I would like to share...

A 16th Century monk named Fra Giovanni once said, 'The gloom of the world is but a shadow, behind it, yet within our grasp is joy. Take joy.'

We can learn a lot from our animals. I'm so sorry about all the loss you've had in your life. Today I met a woman in my Boot Camp class that had recently lost her husband. She said that at first she just couldn't even get out of bed, but that she realized by waisting a whole day feeling sorry for herself, she was not honoring her husband's life, or the life they had together. It sounds like, You're on your way to finding your joy again, and to honoring the lives of your lost loved ones. Good luck! emoticon

Love the quote! Yes, the animals make me laugh every day - I say it's their job. When I'm not yelling or angry at them, of course.

How Do Caffeine-Free People Keep their Energy Up?

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Since I've had no caffeine for 16 days, I also have less energy. How do caffeine-free folks do it? I miss the little jolt I got from a small amount of coffee each day.

Also, is it my imagination, or are fewer Sparkers blogging and huddling these days?

Wishing all a fun day.

Oh, wow, I thought it was just me. Yeah, it seems like fewer people are blogging and huddling and posting messages on the boards...

So, a great big thank you for letting me know that's not just me!

And I don't know how you do it, giving up caffeine. I gave up mine right after I had a baby, so I was sleeping every couple of hours throughout the day. I'm back to drinking at least one cup of coffee a day, though--trying to keep my tolerance low again, but I don't know if I could make it through the day without some caffeine.

You gave up all caffeine? Ouch. I couldn't do that. I don't have to have coffee, but I love green tea. I have at least 5 cups a day. I thought it was suppose to be good for you. I'm glad you're a lot stronger than I am.

I never was a coffee or tea drinker, but did drink quite a bit of Diet Pepsi. I haven't been drinking it for almost a year now. I drink 10-12 cups of water a day, try for 8 hours of sleep, exercise every morning and eat as healthy as possible. I find that when I'm doing those things, I have way more energy than ever before. You'll get to that point, I promise!

I think with the warmer weather people just aren't on spark as much. I find that Spark is a little busier fall-spring. and slow during the summer.

I have found since giving up my Diet Coke I want to do more healthy things so I am exercising more and being more active which gives me extra energy.

Possibly you've made a connection between people not having any caffeine and not blogging. They are so ampped from living a healthy life they forget to keep their blogs up. Just a thought.

And emoticon on quitting caffeine.

When you find the answer, let me know! I don't do much caffeine & my energy is certainly better, but it's still not quite where I want it to be.

I wasn't trolling for comments on my blog today, just concerned at the lack of blogs from people who used to be regulars.

For me it's about getting the right amount of sleep, water, eating right and being active during the day. If I'm active then I'm more tired at night and I sleep better resulting in feeling better the next day.

I am mostly caffeine free. The only time I have caffeine is my once-a-week lunch date with Hubby. The restaurant doesn't have caffeine free Diet Coke, so I have a regular one. (I only have one soday per day, and it's at lunch.)

I felt the same as you at first. Now that it's been several months, though, I feel SO much better! I actually feel as if I have more energy all day long. The caffeine would give me a quick burst of energy, but when it dropped off, my energy would totally crash. Now that I don't have to deal with that crash several times a day, I am more energetic than before.

Hang in there!

I never really saw coffee in that way and now don't drink it unless I am at a decent coffee shop and I get an espresso. A good night's sleep usually does the trick for me. Or a piece of fruit. emoticon

I'm not purposely caffeine-free as I will drink a cup of coffee about once a month, but since joining SparkPeople I have been completely soda-free. I used to rely on soda to get me through the day. Ironically, now that I'm not guzzling caffeinated drinks throughout the day, I actually I have more energy. But I have made other changes too. I make sure I get eight hours of sleep a night, I drink 10+ cups water per day, and I exercise a lot, and I my eating habits are much healthier and more balanced throughout the day. If I feel my energy dive during the day (normally about mid-afternoon when it does happen), I drink more water and/or have a snack with a mix of carbs and protein. That always does the trick. I think the hard part in all this, is that it's not any one thing that keeps my energy levels so high. It's a combination of behaviors. But, I think if you implement them even incrementally, you'll still see improvements.
