Where There's a Will There's a Way

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Today as I was packing up to go to the gym, I realized something. I've gotten much better at packing up to go to the gym!

My gym has lockers, but they are day use only, so you have to take everything each time. I carry my walking/running shoes and my bathing suit in my trunk at all times now. I've walked many miles in whatever I was wearing and my exercise shoes. I have plenty of miniature bottles for shampoo and conditioner, usually full, with me. I have a towel, wash cloth, a sports bra, and extra underwear most of the time.

I laugh, though, at how many times I have had to improvise. More than once I forgot a towel and only had what the gym provides - a one foot square towel piece. I found out I'm pretty much drip dry! And it isn't a crime to leave the gym still moist. I've forgotten the shampoo and tried bath soap on my hair. My observation is if you have conditioner it isn't too awful to use soap on your hair, but without conditioner it is better to settle for plain water. I've forgotten my sports bra and used an extra shoe string to tie up my straps for workout. Then I felt like a 70's protester (bra burned) leaving the gym with little support! Probably the most shocking time was when I thought I had grabbed underwear to change into. Unfortunately it turned out to be underwear I'd converted for a dust rag by cutting out the crotch! That day I left the gym really feeling weird and vulnerable..

So today I'm celebrating that I usually have what I need now. But it is a good thing to know that no matter what I forget, I'll find a way to get my workout in!!

    Hi Marsha
A great blog and some good humor. I never realized what one may need to take to the gym. I live close enough to walk, but also when I go, I am ready to work out . We are not permitted to take any type of bags into the exercise rooms. If one has a bag they would need to leave it out side the rooms or put into a locker, the reasons were that some one walked out with (2) 25 pound weights and the other reason a bag was sitting beside a exercise bike, a woman tripped over it and fractured her skull.
You really gave a good report of the necessities and what you would or could do if you forgot something.
Thank you for sharing

I'm laughing hard at the last one! Didn't your mother ever warn you to be sure you have on decent underwear in case you got in an accident??? Ha-ha. Well, at least it was CLEAN! Being prepared saves time and leaves us with no excuses!

I so understand what you mean about being properly supplied..I did the underwear thing once, only worse, I had forgotten to put ANY in my gym bag, and sure felt weird walking home au natural lol, At least you just get in your car and drive home, slightly better unless you get stopped for whatever reason. I am lucky to be close enough to walk to the places I go to.
Here is to having complete gym supplies with no senior's moments of forgetting something!

I know what you mean; when I worked my gym bag was always ready and in my trunk. When I got home from the gym I'd empty and repack it; hitting the gym straight from work was my best strategy. The gym is close so today, I suit up at home and run over and work out and return. My yoga gear rides in my trunk now and I have an extra set for yoga at home. Life is good.

Walking Wins at This Event!

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Weight Watchers is sponsoring a 5K this Saturday at 6:30pm at Lake Hollingsworth. The Lakeland Runner's Club is loaning its timing clock. As I previously reported (and reported and reported) I ran a 5K on May 7th. I have 4 more 5Ks scheduled, the next one on Saturday, June 4th at 7:00 am.

I could run this Saturday, but I don't think I will. One reason is I bet it is going to be hot. The second reason, far more important, is my daughter will walk with the stroller and 2 grandkids if I walk with her. I think it will be good for all of us.

Yes, Monty. At least part of the time there will be 3 generations walking. We'll see how far Natalie gets. We are taking a stroller that would allow her to stand up and be pushed behind Gwen if she tires. She could even sit down on a little seat if she got really tired.

You know, I should not have even let those "Old Lady Skinny" comments get to me as much as they did. It was like I knew intellectually that the mean comment was just not relevant for me, but it still bothered me, even though I was trying hard to rise above it. But you, SparkFriends, said all the right things and made everything right. You are the greatest!

I want you to know that the person who wrote the mean comment was not a SparkFriend. It was on a different web site where I use a different screen name. So I felt pretty confident she would not read my comment here. I have no desire to inflame someone. Pretty much I've decided to leave that toxic (JOYINKY's wise word) message board. Don't need it.

Since I've been on SparkPeople I have found tremendous support. I am truly grateful.

Of course the comment got to you - you're human and she meant it to get to you. It was mean. You are wise to drop the web site but before you do, you might let the tech people know why you are leaving. They may have a control system in place like SP does to report inappropriate comments and hers was certainly inappropriate. I've known a few people to even get comments here but SP is great about dealing with them. This is such a wonderful web site! emoticon emoticon emoticon

... and here I thought "old lady skinny" was an awesome phrase! I am "old lady skinny" was the first thing to pop into my mind!

To me that is a very positive phrase - "old lady skinny" sounds healthy to me! Both my sisters are on medications - I eat vitamins. I'll take vitamins over medications any day of the week!!

My sister just found out that my briefs are size 14 and she thought that was ridiculous until I had to point out that is a Girls size 14. Then there just wasn't much said about it because she is size 6 Womens. Yes, there is a difference - look it up - google it if you're curious.

As with everything in life my dear dear friend - you can put a positive spin on anything!

Old Lady Skinny !?!!

Sunday, May 15, 2011

I was told today by an online acquaintance that I am "old lady skinny." There may be a grain of truth in her comment. It might be actually easier for me now to eat normally than when I had the challenge of monthly hormonal fluctuations. She went on that people who are "old lady skinny" have unattractive body proportions. I don't think she'll ever read this, so I think I can just write what I think, and I think she is jealous. She still has quite a bit of weight to lose. I don't think I have unattractive body proportions. Her words can't hurt me and I don't need to argue with her. I may have old lady skin, but I don't fit her definition of old lady skinny!!

It sounds very clearly like jealousy. I looked at your pictures, and you are beautiful! She's just trying to make herself feel better about still being overweight. She may be feeling bad about saying it now. I wouldn't think about it anymore if I were you. However, if she says something like that AGAIN, then you might want to consider distancing yourself from her.

sorry to hear someone said something so nasty to you... what happened to the way we were brought up , if you can't something good - don't say anythign at all..
You worked hard to get to your goal weight and should only feel proud, don't let anyone put down.... that other person is probably jealous that you met your goal and she didn't...

Omg soooo mean.... Get that negative person out of your life now. You deserve so much better than that. That saying... with friends like you who needs enemies?....isvery accurate here! I have had people like that in my life. Very passive aggresive. They would say something mean and then follow it up with something I would feel is worth listening to and there you go....Know you are worth much more than that and stick with the Sparkies who think you look awesome!

AQUAGIRL08 5/16/2011 5:20PM

No, Marsha, there is no grain of truth in the woman's statement. You are not "old lady skinny". You are perfectly proportioned and have a beautiful shape. You remind me of a gazelle because you are so graceful. The person you were talking to is to be puttied because she is so full of poison. I feel sad, when I see people like that. They could be so much more than that if they just loved themselves as much as you love and care for yourself. I get angry when I see them take their spite out on an innocent person (you) who doesn't deserve it, because you don't.

Reaching 61 on May 25, and hitting my goal weight today, weighing in at 169.5, I've heard it all. I've been told I'm obsessive because all I talk about is a healthy lifestyle. And THAT is from my overweight sister! I feel wonderful today. You look fantastic and I know you can run these others into the ground. But I don't have to tell you that. You are a positive force! Thanks for all the inspiration!

The Belt Buckle Bash

Saturday, May 14, 2011

Last evening hubby and I attended United Way's Belt Buckle Bash. We took a hayride all around a horse ranch, listened to good (not usually my kind of music, but I was in the mood) country music, had a very good BBQ dinner in a big auction barn, played corn toss, got a new cowboy hat and bandana, had silly pictures taken (no- I don't have them digitally), and talked to lots of good people. It was fun.

And it was more fun because I felt totally comfortable wearing a belt, even a belt with a big buckle. For years I didn't wear belts. Now I not only can if I want to, I feel good about it!
