I knew Natalie had really enjoyed not only decorating Easter eggs and finding them, but also eating them when she asked, "May I have a hard boiled egg for dessert, Old Mom?"

When my kids were little they would eat Easter eggs but not regular hard cooked eggs. So, for a brief period we had decorated eggs at other times too! Mostly I just put smiley faces on them.

A Top Priority

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Yesterday I had Gwen (7 months) and Natalie (4 years) all day. My daughter earned the most she'd ever earned in one day as a massage therapist. She worked at a company who provided massages for all their Administrative Professionals. She came home tired, but with a big smile on her face. I was glad I could rearrange my own work schedule so that she could have this opportunity.

On the downside, I did not get any formal fitness minutes yesterday. The day before I had my worst day at work in years and I didn't get any in that day either. It has probably been three years since I've had 2 days in a row with no exercise. Now, I didn't sit around. I even ran some sprints with my granddaughter and dog in the back yard, but did not sustain it enough to call it cardio. I'm on my way to the gym this morning. I'm going to get a good cardio workout, good strength training session, and also meet with my Wellness Coach.

I know it is very easy to get out of good habits. For the next two weeks, exercising every day to reinforce my good habit is a top priority!

    Hi Marsha
Great blog. There are days that we have little control over the events and you had 2 days in a row. I know your concern about maintaining your exercise, many people would continue to not exercise. But they are not you. You are one of the most motivated person I have met, So as far as missing a couple of days, I really don't think it would effect you in any way.
Your family is lucky that they have you, that was able to adjust your own schedule to take care of your grandchildren.
Everyday , when you post the exercise that you have done that day, I am impressed and inspired . You have been a awesome example for others to follow on their journeys.
Thank you for sharing.

Your daughter and your granddaughters are so lucky to have you in their lives: and of course your commitment to your own health ensures that they will have you for many years to come!! Your Wellness Coach is going to want to use you as her "poster child" for sure!!

Your family and work have to come first, as that is life. Knowing you, you probably made sure you ate at the lower end of the calorie range to make sure you didn't gain anything. Besides, we are actually supposed to have 'rest' days from exercise although looking after children that young can be scarcely considered rest. I don't see you losing your good habits any time too soon. You have them too deeply ingrained now. You will be impressing the heck out of your Wellness Coach I will bet :)

You won't get out of the habit because it is to important to you. All you need to do is think of the smile on your daughters face and you will feel great. cool to spend the time and build relationship with the grandkids.

Taking care of two young children IS exercise in my book! If you log your steps I bet you would be surprised at how many you did. Any time I am with my granddaughter my steps are up 3-4 thousand from my norm.

Going the Distance

Monday, April 25, 2011

Today I ran 6.8 miles and went a total of 7.5 miles on the treadmill. By starting out really slow I was comfortable my whole run. When I finished, I thought I could have kept on for a long time. I went pretty slow because my emphasis today was on achieving my longest run to date. My aim is to increase by no more than 10% per week because that is what I've read is recommended to decrease risk of injury. It took me 90 minutes to make the 7.5 miles, which I calculate as 5 miles per hour average. Sometimes I walked at 2.5mph and a couple times I just felt like running a 7mph interval for two minutes.

I am registered to run five 5Ks in the next four months. I'd like to find a 10K to run in the fall when the weather is likely to be good. Wonder if I'll ever feel like tackling a half marathon, a little over 13 miles? Maybe.

Wow, good job!! If you can do 7.5, you can do 13.1. Honestly, there's not that much of a difference. 13.1 is a fun distance, and once you do one, you'll do another and another. It's fun because you don't have to run all out. You just keep a steady pace the entire time, and it's even okay to walk part of it. You can do it! Just find one and register, and then you've got to do it ;-)

    Hi Marsha
Great blog and congratulations on your miles and time today. You are so motivated, so to answer your question Yes I think you will run a half marathon at some point. I made a commitment to walk a 10 K last year and never did. been watching the schedule for this year and as you I would prefer one in the fall. I really don't want to have to travel the day before a race, so my options will be limited. You really are committed as you have signed up for five 5K's already, WOW!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing and being such a inspiration to all the read your blogs.

Kahlua Making Progress

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Here's our first picture of Kahlua, taken by my daughter. I think she used a camera phone! (Some of you saw this picture already, because I put it in my gallery yesterday.)

Kahlua -- or more formally, Madame Kahlua -- is walking better and better on the leash. Yesterday I bought her a second Easy Walk harness, since she chewed her first one. This morning's walk I had to urge her on and away from smells a couple times. The only time she really tugged was when a black cat crossed the road and sat under a tree looking at her.

The dog gets extra brownie points because I walk her on a short leash, try to get her to heel and walk nicely on my left side. My hubby, on the other hand, just wants to wear her out and walks her on a long leash, permitting her to explore more. Inconsistency is the bane of parenting children or training dogs, but I think she's learning two different styles just fine.

We left Kahlua in the back fenced yard with back porch access through doggie door for nearly 4 hours last eve while we went to the Trans Siberian Orchestra concert, a blend of classical music, rock, and dramatic lights/ lazers/ fire/ videos with singing and acting. It was the first time we'd left her alone since we adopted her 2 weeks ago. She did fine and was glad to see us return. As an aside, I enjoyed the concert, but it was long and sitting for 2 and half hours just doesn't appeal to me as much as it used to.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, active Easter Day!!

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the concert. I agree that it was rather long but you sure do get your money's worth! Kahlua is such a pretty dog. What a sweet face she has - much prettier than a shepard - and her coat looks like it might be soft. My dh does the same thing when walking the dogs. I walk them on a short leash and he walks them on a long leash and lets them sniff everything. If you walk her in the middle of the street, she won't pull to the side and sniff as much.

Kahlua is beautiful and looks like like a highly intelligent dog too: she will soon figure out your different styles!!

Can't sit for long any more either -- getting a bony bottom!! (or bonier than it used to be, certainly . . . )

Way to go training Kahlua! I had to laugh when you mention hubby is not cooperating. That is exact;y the trouble my parents had with Bendix. Mom was the disciplinarian while hubby let him do anything he wanted, and as hubby walked him way more often, the poor dog was constantly getting sick from eating grass and other things he shouldn't have. It really takes two to be on the same page if you want her truly trained. But if you are spending equal time at it, hopefully what you are doing will stick with her.
So glad you enjoyed your concert! I feel the same way about sitting too long too.
Enjoy your Easter! Mom and I will be going for a hike soon :). I have done my normal 75 minutes cardio already.

Lucky Find

Saturday, April 23, 2011

I found a brand new Toastmaster Automatic Rice Cooker with instruction booklet and all the important parts for just $5 at a charity thrift store. I really like the way it cooks brown rice just right and keeps it warm for up to 12 hours. I've always liked brown rice, but had trouble with it coming out either undercooked or soggy. Now that I can easily make it right, I'm sure to include it in my eating plan more often!

I love the rice cooker my Mom gave me -it was a gift from her Thai co workers. I don't know why she insists on making rice the old pot on the stove way when this is so much easier. She really resists technology and change.
Enjoy your perfect rice! Have a Super Saturday!
