Just Humbaugh??

It occurs to me that the whole cuisine industry - fancy chefs and gourmet food - may just be nonsense! Bah Humbaugh!!

It seems to me that people like - or learn to like - whatever they eat. Extra salt, fat, and sugar may seduce us into liking something temporarily, but dull our senses and hurt our health if we continue eating it.

I'm really glad that I have come to like plain food that I choose to eat based on health. Really I enjoy my food more now than when I was overeating.

    I like fairly simple food too. Adding some spices helps but it tends to enhance the flavor unlike added sugar, salt or fat. Did you notice that since you've gotten used to food without sugar, fat or salt that many restaurant foods taste very "strong"? To me they taste processed, fatty and salty. For that reason, there are many foods that I simply don't enjoy eating when we go out for a meal.

    I agree as well. I think we use a lot of seasonings to disguise the fact that we aren't eating fresh and healthy. I love the taste of a sun warmed tomato and some old fashioned apple cider vinegar. Yum!

May Goals

May Goals:

1. Wise eating - both food choices and portions
- maintain weight between 123-129.9
- track using either Weight Watchers or SparkPeople or both

2. Continue to improve fitness
-meet with Wellness Coach to tweak strength training regimen and measure body fat %
-complete 9 or more strength training sessions plus the daily bootcamp videos
-run 12 times with at least one day in between runs; Mayfaire 5K on May 7 - try to beat previous 5K race time; make one run (including warm up/cool down walk) at least 8 miles
-burn at least 1800 calories per week with cardio; cross train with walk, bike, swim, elliptical
-learn to use heart rate monitor

April Accomplishments

April Accomplishments:

1. Nutrition - I ate well at least 90% of the time, so I'd give me an A. I was concerned that my running might be causing a weight gain (increased blood supply, stronger bones or tendons or cartilage) because I gained at two Weight Watcher weigh ins this month, but today I was back down - 124.2 here at home; 125.4 at WW -- right where I want to be. I could do better tracking, but not a bad job. I tend to eat just over my calorie range and exercise more than I committed to do and it balances out.

2. Cardio - 27 days I did cardio exercise and burned more than 2000 calories each week. I set a personal distance record (7.5 miles), a time record (29:25 for treadmill 5K), and did a good variety of activities (walking, running, Zumba, biking, swimming). Although I did not run a competitive race in April, I signed up for five 5Ks - one in May, two in June, one in July and one in August. A

3. Strength Training - completed 9 strength training sessions this month, including 8 at the gym and one here at home. B+

I stayed involved on SparkPeople and got lots of good support from my SparkFriends. Thanks. Hope I gave some support, too. I did very good on water and attitude and pretty good on sleep. Overall, an excellent month!

    I'm so impressed with your progress and maintenance! I found you on the Healthy Lifestyles Forever team and see that you are close to my age, but have maintained your weight loss at a time in life when few have accomplished that! I will learn so much from you! emoticon

What a awesome report. You certainly deserve a A+ for your total work that you do each month. One thing you couldn't mention is what you have done for others. You have been an inspiration for me since we met. But you have inspired and motivated many people here on Spark. You are a example of what one can do with their own life and I thank you for that.

    When my kids were little they would eat Easter eggs but not regular hard cooked eggs. So, for a brief period we had decorated eggs at other times too! Mostly I just put smiley faces on them.

A Top Priority

Yesterday I had Gwen (7 months) and Natalie (4 years) all day. My daughter earned the most she'd ever earned in one day as a massage therapist. She worked at a company who provided massages for all their Administrative Professionals. She came home tired, but with a big smile on her face. I was glad I could rearrange my own work schedule so that she could have this opportunity.

On the downside, I did not get any formal fitness minutes yesterday. The day before I had my worst day at work in years and I didn't get any in that day either. It has probably been three years since I've had 2 days in a row with no exercise. Now, I didn't sit around. I even ran some sprints with my granddaughter and dog in the back yard, but did not sustain it enough to call it cardio. I'm on my way to the gym this morning. I'm going to get a good cardio workout, good strength training session, and also meet with my Wellness Coach.

I know it is very easy to get out of good habits. For the next two weeks, exercising every day to reinforce my good habit is a top priority!

    Hi Marsha
Great blog. There are days that we have little control over the events and you had 2 days in a row. I know your concern about maintaining your exercise, many people would continue to not exercise. But they are not you. You are one of the most motivated person I have met, So as far as missing a couple of days, I really don't think it would effect you in any way.
Your family is lucky that they have you, that was able to adjust your own schedule to take care of your grandchildren.
Everyday , when you post the exercise that you have done that day, I am impressed and inspired . You have been a awesome example for others to follow on their journeys.

    Your daughter and your granddaughters are so lucky to have you in their lives: and of course your commitment to your own health ensures that they will have you for many years to come!! Your Wellness Coach is going to want to use you as her "poster child" for sure!!

    Your family and work have to come first, as that is life. Knowing you, you probably made sure you ate at the lower end of the calorie range to make sure you didn't gain anything. Besides, we are actually supposed to have 'rest' days from exercise although looking after children that young can be scarcely considered rest. I don't see you losing your good habits any time too soon. You have them too deeply ingrained now. You will be impressing the heck out of your Wellness Coach I will bet :)

She and your granddaughters are also lucky to have such a wonderful role model of healthy living! Seeing how happy you are with your lifestyle choices is sure to make a big impression on them and influence their behavior as they grow up!

    I can't believer Gwen is 7 months already!! I think you have your priorities straight; you're back on track. My heart goes out to the mom's that are facing this challenge and still have a young family to care for. It can be done; but wow!

    Taking care of two young children IS exercise in my book! If you log your steps I bet you would be surprised at how many you did. Any time I am with my granddaughter my steps are up 3-4 thousand from my norm.
