Beck - Day 39 - Keep Up with Exercise

Sunday, February 20, 2011

At this point of my life I am an avid exerciser. I thoroughly enjoy many forms of cardio and I'm willing to push myself to achieve new goals. I have just taken up running and am training for the Senior Olympics 5K Road Race on March 12th. I'm willing to do strength training because I enjoy the results and sometimes I enjoy feeling strong while I'm working out. So this chapter of Beck is one I just want to tuck into the back of my mind in case I ever have a challenge that makes me revert to my old couch potato days!!

It's great to enjoy exercise, isn't it? And to have got to the point where you can always fit it into your schedule is somewhere I want to be!

Because you are finding such pleasure in exercise, I doubt that you will become a couch potato any time soon! It's a joy to watch you evolve!

Third Blog of the Day! What is Going On??

Saturday, February 19, 2011

I don't usually blog 3 times in one day, but I have news. I weighed 126.0 this morn on my scale at home and 126.8 clothed at Weight Watchers. And, yes, it was great to see my happy weight number on the scale. I have been working since the beginning of October to get back to this weight and have been bouncing all around it for 4 weeks now. This week I'm going to add at least one more teaspoon of olive or canola oil per day because it will improve my eating (diet/non-diet) and just add forty calories per day.

Perhaps it is more significant, though, that I felt more excited about making my three mile run. The number on the scale is just one way of assessing my health and fitness!

Your doing so great! WOW! You must be at goal. I bet that feels great. The better thing you are going to stay there! Great going with the number on the scale. What a great breakthrough. I'm impressed you run!? I tried that last summer. My knees didn't like it. So I ended up doing speed walking.

"Look at Her Go!"

Saturday, February 19, 2011

I saw an attractive thirty-something woman talking to a much older man as they briskly walked the lake. They were both dark haired and I absentmindedly wondered if maybe he was her dad -- or maybe not. I could hear them talking about fitness training as I approached. The woman looked at me as I passed and I heard her say, "Look at her go!" I stuck my thumb up above my head and she gave me a great big whooping, "WooHoo!" Now, that felt great.

I made the three mile lake today in 27 minutes, running the whole way!!

Beck - Day 38 - Dealing with a Plateau

Saturday, February 19, 2011

I understand that sometimes what you would expect on the scale is not the number that is going to be there. I know you wait it out. You keep on eating healthy and living healthy and eventually the scale will budge. Losing weight would be so much easier if the scale gave us consistent feedback, directly related to our behavior. It doesn't.

Today is my weigh in. I'm ready to hit my goal weight and start implementing the eating plan that is going to keep me there for years and years to come. But if I don't hit it today, it won't get me down. I'm in it for the long haul.

And I also know that maintenance is a range, not a number. Weight fluctuates. I just want mine to fluctuate down a pound lower than it has been the last three weeks. It will. I bring determination to this effort!

Dear SLENDERELLA61, don't drive yourself nuts with a small number- use a buffer zone.. I have a max high and low weight.. However with strength training in the maths.. My weight can fluctuate much more because healthy muscle needs more hydration..

I have gained 5kgs of muscle- but my measurements are changing all the time.. I still fit my clothing- I find the scales is not all the real picture in the maths or does it give feed back from burning of body fat.. Many trim people burn off body fat and because they eat correctly no loss of muscle mass.. Their actual body shape changes..

I went from a pear to a hour glass.. My hips and chest evened up and my waist disappeared.. I do more upper body work in the gym and my arms are not longer match sticks compared to my thunder thigh legs..

Beck - Day 37 - Reduce Stress

Friday, February 18, 2011

I read the chapter. It makes sense. Solve problems to reduce stress. Relax when your body is stressed. Change your mindset by identifying rules you have for yourself and others and then relax your self-imposed rules. Your rules may become evident while you are problem solving.

Right now I am stressed at work. I have two big projects due, but I will have them done this week. Retirement is set for the end of June, so this is a short term problem. My body is not overly stressed, probably because the regular exercise really helps.

I have not yet identified any self-imposed rules. Maybe I already relaxed all of them. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. I'll be on the lookout for them, especially when I am problem solving.

I did biofeedback at Tampa General for migraines. One thing that they told us to do was to take a short "mental vacation". Close your eyes, do abdominal breathing and visualize your body relaxing. If you do this for say about 10 minutes, it is really refreshing and relaxing. You do have to use mind control and chase away any thoughts that creep in about anything other than breathing or relaxing - that's the hardest part!

For me this is a major project...stress at work. It is hard to relax when stressed but I am working on it. Glad you appear to have already done the work.

Need need need this one -- work is quite stressful and I'm not planning to retire any time soon!! So all help in managing it (know I have lots of "rules") will be very very helpful!!
