Holiday Weight Gain Not Inevitable

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I was thinking that I better lose a pound or two in preparation for the holidays. I know I've read that the average American gains 15 pounds or 10 pounds or 5 pounds (depending on what you are reading) between Halloween and New Year's. Many years in my life I have gained holiday weight, and I was thinking I might need a cushion.

Than I looked back over my records. I actually started my most recent streak of healthy eating in December of 2008. I lost almost 6 pounds that month. In November of 2009, I lost .8 pounds and in December of 2009, I lost 1.8 pounds. Both those years I cooked big family holiday meals and indulged in a few treats. Clearly, I do not have to gain weight over the holidays. I do not need a cushion; I have determination to maintain!

It is a good idea to plan for holiday eating in advance. I love that you are already doing that!

I agree with you, during the holidays if I am eating sweets, I make sure they are the best on the table or it is something I really, really want. For the rest, I picture...fat, white flour and salmonella eggs.

I agree; if it's a lifestyle change---why change? I enjoy our holiday meals, I just don't overindulge for 3 months! One, two or three meals is not going to upset anything and I'm committed to healthy choices. Moderation is the key. I've also learned to focus more on friends and family than food. Keeping my activity level up helps too. Remembering food headaches and hangovers helps; surely I'm not the only one who's had them! I'm not perfect by far, there are still things I will not keep here in the house. I'll enjoy them in moderation elsewhere and when the family celebration is here; extra food goes home with my kids and their teenagers! Good to be thinking and planning ahead; thanks Marsha!

    Hi Marsha
I agree with you, there is not a reason to lose weight now just to gain it over the holidays.
In 2007 at this time I was in process of releasing weight and release weight every week till the end of the year. . I did not experience weight gains in 2008 & 2009 and don't plan on it this year. We can enjoy the holidays and maintain.

You're right. We don't need to lose weight for a "cushion" just so we can gain it by pigging out at holiday meals. All I have to do is remember how totally miserable and in pain I was all Thanksgiving night three years ago. I never want to experience that ever again.

We won't, will we.

You are doing very well realizing that you don't have to gain over holiday time. I have managed to get through my big family meals without too many scars.
Now taking a vacation trip away from home and all your healthy eating and exercising habits, that is an entirely different colored horse.. What would be the solution for that?? Your guess is as good as mine..

I am just the opposite. I am losing now, because I plan to blow it on the holidays. Or at least for a few days. By planning cheat days, it motivates me to lose the weight now. Planned Cheat days help me in the long run.

9,496 Times and Follow Up

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

I just went to edit my SparkPage and saw a surprising number. It says in the lower left hand corner that my SparkPage has been viewed 9,496 times! That is amazing. Of course, I look at it fairly often, but that is not all me.

Did you know you could see how many times your page has been viewed? How many times has your page been viewed?

And, in follow up to yesterday's blog, I did not have a gain due to the prime rib dinner last eve. Hooray!!

(OMG... mine says 8164! And yes, I use it to navigate & swap out pictures every month or so... so a lot of that IS me, too.)

I would have been surprised if you had gained any weight with that wonderful Prime rib dinner. I bet you now enjoyed it even more.

Thanks for the information.

Fun with No Consequences???

Monday, October 11, 2010

I'm at the top of the weight range that is acceptable to me AND I had to attend a prime rib mystery dinner fund raiser. Of course, I did not have to eat it, but I chose to enjoy some. I ate very moderately and don't expect a gain tomorrow morning when I weigh. Fingers are crossed.

Both my husband and I were called upon to participate, and we had fun! Even if I have a gain tomorrow, I would still choose to attend the function. But, of course, I'll be tracking very, very carefully for the next week or so. And it's to the gym tomorrow morning for sure!!

One meal won't derail you. I have discovered this many a time.
Like a Spark article said, as long as you get it 80% right consistently, you will do fine.
It works.
So don't stress it, just remember you can have some fun and let loose once in a while! You can even *gasp* miss a day of exercise too!!
Also stressing over things makes it harder to lose weight as well.
So relax and enjoy life, which is what a healthy lifestyle is meant to be!
You really are doing a great job, you just have to believe in yourself!!

Not Sure

Saturday, October 09, 2010

Yesterday I saw a woman I hadn't seen in months. She asked me if I'd lost weight on purpose, and I assured her I had. "I hate you," she said, and walked away. It didn't feel right and left me wondering what I could do. I suspect she's been gaining. Wonder if she'd want an invitation to SparkPeople. Don't have a good feeling about it. Maybe leave well enough alone. Just not sure.

On a more positive note, I enjoyed a SparkTeam walk this morning -- beautiful weather and great conversation. I did miss TBRANCH who is now in a cast. Wish her a speedy recovery. I enjoyed a great Zumba class at the Y and then played with Natalie for several hours. What fun!

Wish everyone could find peace with food, energy for fun, and happiness in life!

Since she walked away - it would have been difficult to tell her about SparkPeople. I have printed up cards inviting people to join us whenever anyone asks how I lost the weight.

Let her deal with her problems and maybe next time you meet she might be ready to listen to you. I have never encountered that. Sure, people tell me they hate me - but then they laugh and admit they wish they had the same determination I have shown.

I am sorry - I know how terrible she made you feel. But we cannot live another person's life for them. Hopefully her day will come soon and she will be ready to walk the walk with us.

You rock!

I enjoyed the Spark Walk too! We were so engrossed in talking that the time just flew! Do you realize that we did two 21 minute miles and it felt like we were walking really slow? You are used to zipping right along and it was just a warm up for your Zumba class but I was so sore from my two hour work out the day before that it felt like a good workout to me! LOL

People have strange relationships with food and weight. I've never been able to figure it out. I suspect the "I hate you" comment had less to do with you and more to do with her feelings about herself than anything else. It's a shame that she couldn't get past that and see you as a person rather than what you look like now. I guess we all have our own obsessions.

I agree with the others Marsha. This was a mean response to your success. In this case, I guess that we have all walked in her shoes to some extent and know how it feels to be that fatter person with a slim friend?

Her response was one of jealousy and envy. Your reaction is a much more sensitive one about reaching out to her and sharing the secrte of your success.

Perhaps there are subtle differences in ways to raise the issue if you decide to go down that route - having decided whether Bigger You would have welcomed advice from her slim friend. An 'invite' to SP might imply that you think that she is overweight whereas telling her how you did it might be more of an admission that you felt overweight and therefore less apparently critictal of her?

You're a wise lady Marsha and I know that you will do the right thing.

Glad you enjoyed the rest of the day.

I know I allow too many people to upset me and they probably don't know or care that they hurt my feelings. But think instead that she must be feeling pretty bad about herself to say that comment to you... Maybe she -no not maybe , for sure = she needs a prayer.

Hi Marsha
That is sad about the lady and her comment. Can't really assume, but she could be frustrated and that is how she reacted, You didn't get the opportunity to say anything and I know you would have if you had the chance. Nothing you can do now.
At least most of your day was awesome, great weather for Florida, even down here it only got into the low 80's. Isn't Zumba fun? I am glad I started and we found out there is a second class during the week so I am going to do 2 a week.
Thank you for sharing and have a beautiful Sunday.

Short Term Obstacle

Thursday, October 07, 2010

As I blogged, I rode 25 miles on my bike on Sunday and then 10 more miles on Wednesday. My bike is really comfy, the weather was gorgeous both days, I felt no discomfort, and thoroughly enjoyed both rides. So I was really surprised to find a round scab, about the size of a silver dollar, that must have been made by my bike seat rubbing off the skin through my clothes. Now I feel it. Isn't that strange? I guess the bike is off limits until it heals up. Maybe I'll go to the new bike shop in my neighborhood to see if there is more padding for my bike seat. I guess it's just a short term small obstacle to overcome.
