Obstacle: Knee Pain

My right knee started hurting. Guess I'll have to give up my 120 minutes of cardio per day and cut calories. I'm worried that I'll be hungry and less fit.

I will give up all jogging, jumping, and running with Natalie. Today I told her I could only walk fast. Bummer.

Wish I had an expert to help me figure out my safe limit, but I'll do the best I can. Think I'll try 30 min of walking, the SparkPeople strength training, and knee exercises. Since I'm in the process of fighting health insurance denial, I really can't go to the doctor unless I'm dying.

I will get through this.

    Marsha I'm so sorry that you have to go through all of this pain. I think fast walking for 30 minutes several times a day might do the trick. Also, have you considered water aerobics? I go either to the Gandy Pool ($2.50/class - it's heated) or possibly the YMCA for their classes. (I think you have to join the Y unless you have a doctor's note.) You don't have to stop exercising, just change the type of exercise that you're doing. Can you bicycle? That's also a great way to exercise. There are some terrific bike paths that run from Bartow to Highland City. There is also a wonderful gym at the Kelly Recreation Center, next to the Gandy Pool, that has treadmills and stationery bikes. The gym cost is $3 per day, for the whole day. Just a thought....

    really take it easy don't overdue the spark knee exercises sound wonderful. also some people i know with knee problems do well with riding a bike. have a great week and emoticon

Maintenance Observation: Clothes

When I was a size 1X things often fit me whether I gained 10 or 15 pounds or lost 10 or 15 pounds. Now just a couple pounds means a new size.

    I'm like that now. I mean I can wear a size 12(which is normal)or a 10 and sometimes squeeze into a 8

Husband Does the Shopping

My husband does the grocery shopping and I do the cooking. He started shopping probably six months after I began losing weight and eating healthier because I wasn't getting him the things he wanted. Right now his chips and potato salad are not tempting me. Even the leftover Halloween candy is not bothering me right now. A year ago it would have kept calling my name, but I'm comfortable co-existing right now.

Whenever Gary buys things that are not that healthy, I use a little and add things I need. When he wanted to split a can of Chunky Campbell's soup this week, I gave him 3/4's of it. To my 1/4 I added fresh green beans and organic low sodium black beans. If I had split the can with him I would have been way over on sodium that day.

For now, we are both happy with this arrangement.

New Pictures

My daughter snapped some pictures yesterday so I updated my profile picture and gallery. My dear granddaughter was sweet as can be as you can see in the pictures. The bougainvillea is in glorious bloom so it made a great back drop for yesterday's pictures. I found pictures of me a year ago at 40 pounds greater. I have not located any from 1998 when I was 77 heavier and if I find them I'll need help to scan them because I know they aren't in the proper format. Needs more work, but making progress.

Also making progress on dental issues. Got two permanent crowns today and appointment for Dec 3rd for the next one. Looking forward to getting mouth comfortable and in good shape.

I need to do better planning for my meals. Although I'm meeting calories, carbs, fat, protein, calcium, cholesterol, trans fat, and saturated fat goals almost all of the time, others I'm having some trouble with. Fiber is one I'm usually just fine in, but find it a limiting factor. Sometimes I have to make a non-whole grain selection in order not to go over. Sodium I have to really work to keep under the max. Potassium I've been over a couple times, but iron, folate, and magnesium I'm not getting enough. Some of the things it says to eat (like beans to get magnesium) are then suppose to be limited to reduce potassium. I do take a multi vitamin which may be helping. On the other hand, I may be getting too much of some of the nutrients in the pills. It's just a lot to figure out. I'm certainly getting more information and feedback than I've ever gotten before on what I eat. I would like to try the meal plans but doubt that my husband would be in favor of it. We'll figure this out.

You are doing such a great job! I think that the vitamins and minerals that you get from food are a little different than what you get from a pill. I know that if you take vitamin A in a pill you have to limit the amount that you take. But, if you eat food with vitamin A in it, you don't have to limit as much. Unless you're eating tremendous amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, I wouldn't worry too much. Just don't take extra supplements (besides a multi vitamin) or you will overload. You might want to research this (in your spare time - lol) and see what the experts say about it. I may research it too just to see, now that I'm curious! Have a good day and keep up the wonderful work!

It's Monday

I was up at 5:30am. Didn't make my goal of 8 hours sleep, but I had seven good hours and feel good. I walked 2 miles on Fort Frazier trail with two neighbors, DeLois and Berneice. I don't know them well, but I'm glad walking brought us together. Then I met the Brophy's and a man named Bob (last name unknown) walking in my neighborhood. Came inside and did a 45 minute StartWalking (Leslie Sansone) on BrightHouse On Demand. Still have 25 minutes to meet my goal of 120 minutes per day.

On the positive side, my dear granddaughter (DGD) is making great progress on potty training. After several starts and stops and discouragement, I think she's got it. Just needs reminders.

Yesterday had a great and yummy time at Harry's. I ordered the Red Fish (that made New Orleans famous) off the tapa sampler menu. It comes with nora rice. I ordered mixed fresh veggies with that - broccoli, carrots, zuccini and yellow squash. The fish had 1-2 T of yummy sauce. I did the best I could estimating the items in the dishes in order to enter it in my tracker. I estimated 4 tsp soybean oil, but it could have been olive or other, and 1 tsp butter. Just a guess. The rest of it I knew.

I have now exercised an average of 2 hours per day for over 6 weeks. I set a goal and planned to reward myself with a new scale. The scale showed 137.6 last eve after supper and 134.8 this morning. Good. My hydration was 51.5% last eve and 50% this morning. Good. What was the disappointment was the % of body fat. I was 29.5% last eve and 30.5% this morning. I had expected 22-23% fat as my estimated BMI by my doctor was 22. Oh, well. It certainly gives me something to work on. I suspect my fad dieting early in life has messed with my muscle mass.

    You are doing an awesome job Marsha! I try to do between 90 and 120 minutes per day too. (except on my rest day when I only do 30 minutes) You are making great progress! Keep up the good work!

    Wow 2 hours a day. That is awesome. I hope that as time goes on, especially around Thanksgiving I can work my way up to 2 hours a day. I usually get in about 70 minutes at most but am working my way up. Good for you. And good luck! emoticon
