Powerful Short Autobiography

Saturday, March 29, 2014

If you haven't read Portia Nelson's Autobiography in Five Short Chapters, I recommend you do so:

I see many parallels with my weight loss journey. Do you?

Life is never a straight line from point A to point B. Habits are just that, whether good or bad. Individuals always have a choice, and sometimes those choices are difficult.

Very good analogy.

Another Celebration Of 5 Years of Maintenance!!

Friday, March 21, 2014

NOW I'm officially at 5 years of maintenance! I've gotten wonderful applause and congrats from the At Goal & Maintaining Plus Transition to Maintenance Team. And, although that title is a mouthful, it is a fantastic team!! Their research says (I'm pretty sure it is based on the National Weight Control Registry) that chance of regain drops to 27% after 5 years of maintenance from 80-95% at the time of goal achievement. And that is great news. Statistically I have a 73% chance of maintaining my weight loss now. However, I know that does not mean I can give up my healthy eating and my activity. I am still just one binge from a 10 pound gain that can mushroom to 40 pounds or more in no time. So I make a commitment to healthy eating every day!!

I have already been celebrating 5 years maintenance since March 9th. March 9, 2009, is when I got back to my Weight Watcher free lifetime. I think the difference between what I reported to the team is the 2 pound leeway WW allows or maybe it is that WW consider a healthy BMI to be 20-25 whereas SparkPeople considers it 18.5-24.9. Whatever the discrepancy, it's okay! I've maintained FIVE full years. WooHoo!!

PS If you didn't read my blog of March 11th, 5 Surprises after 5 Years of Maintenance, I'm twisting your arm to please do. I think it is my best blog this year:

But it is good for us to remember how quickly we can fall back into old habits.
So let's never forget.
Have a terrific evening.

Have you joined the National Weight Control Registry? The paperwork is a bit much, but it is so important for them to have great data on folks that have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for over a year.

Healing, Dancing, Running and Changing

Thursday, March 20, 2014

Gwen (3 year old granddaughter who I keep 4-6 days a week) is much, much better. She's eating and sleeping and wanting to play. Runny nose is about her only complaint now. Relief!

I enjoyed the Senior Dance this morning. My friend who power walked with me Monday showed up with pictures of me in the Senior Games walking events. I didn't even know her boyfriend had taken the pictures. Perhaps I'll scan them so I can post them to a blog, timely or not.

This afternoon I went to the Y and did the SP Intermediate Running Speed Program on the treadmill. It was a challenge although I did finish it. I'm definitely not as fast as I was a year ago, but I'm working on it. Truly it is more important to me to be fit than fast, but I'd like to be both. I know I have to be careful as injury from speed work is not what I want. And as far as fall prevention, I go to the eye doctor tomorrow and hope to get glasses that will help me see where I am running better.

Last thing I want to share today is that I decided to change my attitude about the scale and -- voila! -- I changed my attitude. Haven't weighed in several days despite the fact that I've been eating smart and feeling a bit more slender than last week. I don't have to see it on the scale. I know I'm doing fine!! Hope you are, too.
