Glasses, Tight Shoestrings, and Staying in Condition

Saturday, April 05, 2014

I got my new glasses. They have removable magnetic parts at the temple corners that make them like goggles, especially good for cycling. The lenses are Transitions, changing from clear to sunglasses. They have an adjustable removable strap in the back to hold them on tight. But best of all, they are single vision, which means I can see the ground really well, as opposed to my regular progressive glasses where the bottom is really meant for reading. When I run with the new glasses there is no doubt I can see better. I am so hoping these glasses will help keep me from falling. I know that being attentive, picking my feet high enough, and just being careful is important, too.

Today I ran 10 miles. At mile 9 the top of my feet were hurting, so I stopped and loosened my shoe strings. Couldn't believe how much that helped. I know feet can swell as you run and mine must have. Had never had that issue before, but I'll watch to make sure I'm not tying them too tight before I leave from now on.

It had been 5 weeks since I'd run over 6 miles, partly due to a cough that messed with my training last week. My leg muscles were a little sore after the run today. My plans are to do at least one 10 mile run each month so that I don't lose my half marathon conditioning. Then with one month's training, a 12 mile and 2 weeks later a 14 mile, I'd be ready. With 2 month's planning I could do even better.

I still haven't decided if I'm going to rejoin the Galloway group next session. I have until the first week in June to decide. There are many pluses and minuses. I may join, but not run with them every week. Still thinking----

Edit: yes, I will be running 3x a week and running quite a few 5Ks

I'm sure the glasses are helping...they are our eyes afterall....I never mind what I have to spend on glasses...they are my EYES!

Good for you! My goal is to run three time a week, too. It's a nice number for me and it keeps me injury free.

I'm glad your glasses are working out! Nothing worse then running "uncomfortably."
Keep at it!

I am currently reading a couple Galloway books.

Awesome idea on the glasses. If you're like me even though I wear a progressive lens I can still read well with no glasses so if you do have to read something you can just remove the glasses. One of the advantages of being near-sighted!

Sounds like you will be ready to run with your advance planning in place.

I actually want a pair of prescription goggles for swimming. I know they exist because when my kids took swimming lessons, one of the instructors had them.

    Yay for glasses!!
Yay for 10 miles!! I always have to remind myself to loosen my laces a bit before I run long. Solid HM-ready plan.

OMG progressive lenses! I got a pair two years ago and had to give them back. I know there are people who like them (including my optometrist) but they were almost lethal for me. I was walking along and heard a noise and looked quickly to the side and the vision distortion (and loss of proprioception) caused me to fall and I cracked a rib. I don't understand how anyone goes down stairs confidently with them on. Driving??? Not safe in my book. Well, I'm glad you got good new glasses.

Glad your new glasses are working for you - I was supposed to get bifocals last visit - but that makes me nervous. Thanks for the shoestring tip - I wonder if that is why my one foot hurts when I run long distances. have a great day!

the new glasses sound fantastic! I have transitions this time and they do make a difference. Next time, if I don't need new progressive lenses in the ones I have, maybe I will do the same and get a single vision sunglass. I have to be very careful going down stairs with my progressives!

You are going to do awesome!. Joining the Galloway group would mean the companionship of your fellow runners, always a bonus!

"Shoestrings": not an expression I'm familiar with. "Shoe laces"? Are both terms used in US?

Good idea to loosen 'em up, no matter what they're called!!

In addition to the 10 miles once a month, you'll run as least 3 times a week, right? Otherwise you won't be able to get ready for a race that quickly.

Those glasses do sound great!

Scanned Finally

Friday, April 04, 2014

My friend, Bertie, who took these pictures asked that I scan and post them, so here goes:

Here's a picture of me finishing the 1500 meter walk. My official time was 11 minutes flat.

This picture was taken during the 5K walk, at about three-quarters of a mile in. We went around the high school track, before heading out the gate, down the street to a park, around a loop with lakes and playgrounds and picnic tables, and then back to the track.

Here's the medal ceremony. My good Weight Watcher friend, Brenda, took the bronze medal.

The Senior Games ended March 10th. It was fun. We'll do it again!!

Nice pictures. You're a photogenic runner. I look like a frazzled sweaty mess in race pics. I actually bought the expensive Marathon photo of me in the 8 K because I looked so bad I'm hoping it will spur me on to look better in the one next year!! My husband is a very photogenic runner, too, darn him!

Unexpected Motivation

Wednesday, April 02, 2014

I enjoyed a slow, easy run on the TM today with almost no coughing. Just missed two runs due to the cold. I'm back!! There are some new signs at the Y that I like. "Good Things Come to Those Who Sweat" and "Stick with It. What is Hard Today Will Become Your Warm Up." And there's a white board that I can't give you verbatim, but said something like you have just one body to live in and it can be an anchor holding you down or it can be a source of energy, vitality, and joy. Motivation from an unexpected source is even more effective!!

I have plans that will keep me from much computer time for the next week. I'll be done on Thursday the 11th. I'm thinking of using a Runner's World training plan with daily e-mails. My next race, a 5K, will be on June 7th, so I'll have just 8 weeks (and one spare day) to complete the plan. That just might work!!

Wishing you another happy, healthy, active Sparkling day!!

Powerful Short Autobiography

If you haven't read Portia Nelson's Autobiography in Five Short Chapters, I recommend you do so:

Life is never a straight line from point A to point B. Habits are just that, whether good or bad. Individuals always have a choice, and sometimes those choices are difficult.

Very good analogy.
