Senior Games Update

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

Today hubby and I played Bag Toss, otherwise known as cornhole. It was a double elimination tournament. My nephew came to the site and helped keep Gwen supervised while we played. Hubby did win 1 out of his 3 games; I lost both of my games, but I didn't embarrass myself. I hit the board often, and the hole occasionally, but just played better players. Glad I participated. And at the site there was a ballet class for 3-5 year olds going on. Gwen was invited to participate and love it!!

So to recap, hubby got a silver medal in checkers, but struck out in Sudoku and we both struck out in Bag Toss, but had fun. He has chess tomorrow. He's really good at chess. I have a running 5K, a walking 5K, and a walking 900 meter event on Saturday. Last year I placed in all 3 events; this year, we'll see!

Don't Eat C. R. A. P.

Monday, March 03, 2014

At the Y last week I saw a white board with a message that has stuck with me: Don't Eat C. R. A. P.

C = carbonated beverages
R = refined carbohydrates
A = artificial sweeteners
P = processed foods

I'm doing pretty good with most of these, but plan to do even better!! The artificial sweeteners are definitely the hardest one for me. I celebrate that I have cut way back, but recognize I could still do better.

    I dont normally eat any of those. I gaveup artificial sweeteners when I noticed my sweet tooth was getting more powerful. So now I use sugar or honey, but less of it.
PS..Sometimes I have to eat white pitta or noodles, when wholemeal unavailable

Galloway Group Picture

Sunday, March 02, 2014

Here's the picture of our Galloway running group that was taken yesterday. I'm the 6th face from the right. Not everyone made the picture - at least 3 people were running events - but it is a great group. One of the guys from my Weight Watcher group has decided to join. I'm so excited that I recruited one!

Running and Portions

Saturday, March 01, 2014

Disney sent me a congratulatory e-mail with this picture in it. So happy I got one without having to buy it. So we get to see me running in Epcot.

Today I went and had my picture taken with the Galloway running group at 6am and then waited for sunrise about 6:50 to start running at Lake Hollingsworth. After a 10 minute walking warm up and one mile run at 11 minutes per mile, I ran a half mile in 4:16 and then a full mile in 8:57. If I can do that for 3.1 miles, I'll make the time I want for Senior Games a week from today. We'll see. I also gave a big sprint, just to see how fast I could go. In 53 seconds (I tried to estimate a minute, but was a little off) I made it .14 miles which is going at 6.1 minutes per mile pace. Ewww, wish I could do that for a mile!! I am feeling recovered from the half marathon, although my nose is still running. Perhaps I'll be over this symptom by Saturday, but I'll run either way.

Enjoyed my Weight Watcher meeting today. It was all about portion control, a great topic. I'm pretty good with the foods I eat regularly, but there is always more to learn. I'm really feeling good at this weight. Definitely do not want to gain any more, but I am just fine with 132. That's a BMI of 21.3. Good enough!!

Picture, Senior Games, and Confession

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Guess I wouldn't have needed to pose with my Princess HM medal after all. Sarah found another picture of me to include, see lower right:

I finished number 27 in my age group out of 283 runners. Out of the 19,800 finishers I came in about number 3,600. I know, though, that many took their time and stopped for pictures and more entertainment than I did.

I still have a head cold and it may be aggravated with allergy. We have so many (some quite beautiful) things in bloom. There certainly is a lot of pollen around. I slept well last night, glad I could run yesterday, and don't feel as tired today.

So for now we are focused on Senior Games, and as usual, taking care of grandkids. I am so proud of hubby earning second place in checkers. Other than playing occasionally at Cracker Barrel, I don't think he's played in 30 years. He tried to practice on the computer, but couldn't find a checkers program he liked. Hope he does well at chess. Chess he has played and has practiced quite a bit. He's doing Sudoku, too. I'd be doing that one, but I do have kids that day. We are both doing the Bag (corn bags) Toss. He made us a set of boards to practice. It's fun, but I am very inconsistent. I'll sink one and then miss the board entirely!!

I kind of feel like I'm cheating and should confess. I changed my ticker weight from 126 to 132. Last year was my year to try to achieve 126. I got there several times, but have trouble maintaining there. It is my favorite weight, but it seems like 132 is much easier for me to maintain. This is my year to make peace with the scale. I've weighed exactly 131.4 the last 4 days in a row. There may be a time I want that middle 2 back, but for now that is good enough!!

The body will tell you what the weight should be and 132 sounds perfect for you as you don't have a problem maintaining it. You look great at whatever weight!

    I'm thinking maybe "confession" is not the right term? Confession suggests admission of wrongdoing or failure. There is no failure here: I think it's a real breakthrough for you. You're committing to health rather than setting an arbitrary target that doesn't accord with optimal nutrition, optimal exercise and optimal opportunity to focus energy on other things you enjoy -- the things you CAN enjoy because you are already at what has evolved overtime demonstrably to be your optimal weight. So: you're acknowledging your optimal weight is -- where you are at.

AQUAGIRL08 2/27/2014 7:45PM

    Awesome stats on the Princess HM!!! I hope you start to feel better soon! As for changing your ticker, I feel like you eventually have a natural, healthy maintenance weight. You may like having the 2 in the middle, but is the stress worth it? Only you know the answer to that question. I don't think that using 132 as your goal weight is cheating. You are using your body's natural maintenance number. That is a smart decision. If you drop below that number, it is a nice little gift.

    Congrats on the HM!

Judith Beck makes the distinction between your "lowest achievable weight" and your "lowest SUSTAINABLE weight." I suspect that most of us have to come to terms with the latter if we aren't going to make ourselves crazier than we already are! Love that you will make peace with the scale.

    Sometimes finding "natural" range might take a while? Anyway, I'm having similar issues, but I think going up from 122 to 125 is not such a horrible thing. Leaving my ticker at 122 for now, but also not stressing about it.

Good enough is good enough... hope that cold continues its EXIT path from your life!

(although even though I'm losing excruciatingly slowly, I'm more at peace with the scale than in previous times.) Good luck to hubs in chess and both in the toss.
