Today is a beautiful day here, perfect in the shade with a light breeze and just a bit warm in the sun when you are moving. We've been lucky. The 3 days I've needed to take the stroller and walk to pick up Natalie at school (because hubby had the car for Senior Games checkers, Sudoku, and chess) have been good weather. Most of the walk was pleasant really.
About two thirds of the way has sidewalk. I found that what worked best for the areas with sand, grass and weeds are to pull off the street and wait when a car is coming, but to actually get back on the road to push. The first day I just took the one child stroller and 7 year old Natalie walked. Unfortunately, she injured her toe. So, the last 2 times I've taken the stand-and-sit stroller that transports them both. Pushing about 90 pounds of kids does take some effort. I used Map My Route on SparkPeople and it showed I burned 111 calories for the 1.6 miles, but that wasn't considering the pushing. However, many times I've accepted a higher than I thought calorie count, so this time I accept what it says. (I also did a TM workout with a one mile run this morning at the Y).
Natalie says she would like to be a walking student all the time next school year and walk (assuming no foot injury). But I bet when school starts again in the August heat, neither she nor her parents will want to do it. We'll see. I might need an extra shower a day, but there are worse things!!
