Grapefruit Season!

Friday, December 13, 2013

Grapefruits are ripe! My neighbor brought me 21 pink and white grapefruits. Some are the size of an orange and some are more typical grapefruit size. Some are sour; some are sweeter. None are as good as the ones that used to grow at my daughter's rental house. That's okay. I still love grapefruit.

Even though the Grapefruit Diet of years ago was mostly hype, there is something about grapefruit. They seem to reduce my sugar cravings. I forget about them when they aren't in season. I should remember and occasionally splurge on a foreign one out of our season. Yummmmm.

PS I'm planning to have fun at the Jingle Bell 10K tomorrow!!

I miss my grapefruit tree. It bit the dust before my husband passed and I wish that I could get another one that was a sweet as this one was. He also was the one to get me to eat them too. I did not like grapefruits before because they tasted bitter but this one was a ruby red and was so sweet too.

I love the pink ones, but sadly the "greening" has hit the trees in our community and I don't think anyone has one left and we used to have wonderful fruit here. Hope you don't get a problem in your area.

I love grapefruits, and have even written about them in my blog

When we lived in N. Calif., we had a grapefruit tree. This sucker produced the most beautiful looking grapefruits, I've ever seen. Unfortunately the fruit was completely inedible. The grapefruit were not only sour, the fruit was so acidic, that no amount of dilution (of the juice) or sugar could render them "stomachable".

As my blog posts indicates, I don't even like sugar on grapefruit.

The lot, of that California house, did have other desirable trees, however. An apricot tree that produce huge, red, sweet tasty apricots. A bing cherry tree that produced the best bing cherries I've ever eaten. And, a giant redwood that dwarfed the house and the neighborhood. And, oh yes, a mulberry tree that produced tons of fruit. While nobody I ever met cares for mulberries, the mulberries would ferment on the trees; the birds would eat them, and then they would get drunk resulting either in their falling off the fence when they would alight there, or flying beak first into our patio plate glass sliding doors and thereby committing "hari kari"!. :-| | emoticon

Yesterday when I went to my Galloway running FaceBook group I was really surprised to see this picture posted:

A person in my running group recognized me and posted it. She found it on an athletic wear FaceBook page. I don't know who submitted it. The picture came from my SparkPeople success story. Funny, but I was wearing Fila athletic clothes, not Lily Bomb so my picture should not have been submitted to that site. It has a contest for people to submit pictures of themselves wearing the brand.

I really don't mind. Now a lot more people I run with know that I've lost weight. One of my friends commented that she wanted to buy it as a poster. Am I going to be a poster??

Run and Running Party

Sunday, December 08, 2013

Yesterday morning I got in a great 7 mile outdoor run with my running group. (I had prepared for an 11 mile run, but evidently I'd misread the schedule.) It was in the 60's at 6am when we ran, but humidity was over 90% and my glasses kept fogging. Oh, I'm not complaining. It was a great day for a run! The Galloway Program Director recommended that since my current goal is to qualify for the national Senior Games 5K, that I run every other Saturday with Galloway on the longer runs and do speed work on alternate weeks. Sounds like a plan! Previously she'd kind of hinted if I was going to focus on 5Ks I didn't belong there; glad she's changed her mind.

Attended the Christmas dinner party of Lakeland Runners Club last night. My friend, Shyre, picked me up so she'd have someone to go with. She said she didn't know anyone there and asked me to introduce her around. Well, she knew almost as many people as I did, although I did get to introduce her to about a half dozen runners she'd seen at races but didn't know. The meal was delicious. The carolers from the local arts high school were fantastic. The club annual awards were inspiring and there were lots of door prizes. Although I didn't win a prize I sat beside someone who won a $15 gift card for a Road ID. She already had one and gave it to me. I had been going to order one, so it was just what I wanted.

The club president posted this photo of our party room on FaceBook shortly before the event:
They took lots of pictures, so maybe more will be available today. However, they have not yet posted the Christina 5K pictures on their site due to some kind of software issue.

This morning I'm still in my maintenance range, but near the top, 3.4 pounds over my favorite weight. I'm thinking at least a pound and a half is sodium. Lots of water today, veggies, and good eating today.

Two Christmas parties down and one to go! Have a healthy, happy day, SparkFriends!!!

I'd like to recommend adding a little to the Road ID certificate and getting the deluxe silicone and band with the flip lock stainless buckle. If you decide to do that, get a runner who already has one to help you size it. There are no directions and it would be easy to make the band too short.

Good Try

Saturday, December 07, 2013

In my family I am known for deviled eggs. Whenever we have a family gathering relatives almost always ask me to bring deviled eggs.

This last week I decided to make some healthier. So instead of my usual Kraft mayonnaise, I used plain Greek yogurt. I also used no salt and sodium-reduced pickle relish.

I can't say that I liked them, although mine didn't go to waste. My hubby took one bite. On a positive note, my 6 year old granddaughter still loved them. I think next time I'll try Greek yogurt with some sea salt. Making two drastic changes may be too much all at once. Perhaps I'll try half mayo and half yogurt at some point and see if perhaps I could gradually get everyone used to the change. We'll see.

I use reduced fat mayo or fat free mayo. The reduced fat has less sodium than the fat free. I would imagine that mixing the reduced fat mayo with non fat yogurt would be okay too.

Oh, I love deviled eggs!!! I agree with others, one change at a time. Make sure and don't tell anyone because change will make preconceived notions before they even try them!

Good for you for trying to make them healthier, though. I believe in moderation, so if you don't "get it down" you can always have them as a treat! emoticon

SparkTeam Dinner and Recipe

Friday, December 06, 2013

The SparkPeople dinner last night was great! There were eight of us in an absolutely gorgeous member's home. (Edit: yes, she is gorgeous; but when I wrote it I was thinking of her house!!) Wish my hubby would have gone with me, but he opted out. I adapted an old recipe of my mom's and everyone seemed to like it. I got several compliments. Unfortunately, when I added it to SparkRecipes, I noted it makes 18 servings (or 9 big ones) but the nutrition information was not divided. Believe me, I've never met the person who could eat all this in one sitting:

If anyone knows a way to edit it, it would save me. Bet I have to delete and re-enter it. I baked it, but then transferred it to my crockpot to keep it warm. Inefficient as far as dirty dishes, but it worked.

I should have taken a picture of it, but forgot my camera. In fact, nobody took pictures last night. It was an oversight. It was an evening to be remembered!

Edit: I used the "makeover" function, as suggested, to produce the right nutrition info. Instead of over 500 calories, it now shows 31 calories per serving.
