A Maintainer Who Runs; A Runner Who Maintains

Monday, December 16, 2013

Am I a person maintaining a large weight loss who does a little running? Or am I a runner who does a little weight management?

Actually, neither effort is little. They both take determination and consistency.

But I know my priorities. Weight management/maintenance as part of my overall health comes first. If I had to quit running to be healthier, I would.

Luckily running is part of my health and wellness efforts. That I enjoy running is a plus. That I've made many running friends is another plus. That I, a couch potato for decades, am competitive and can win some age group bling is a total hoot! I love it!! But I would run if there was never another award in my future. And if I have to sacrifice performance in order to cut calories from time to time, well, that's okay, too.

Yes, health comes first. I've been plagued by injuries off and on for two years, and had plenty of time to think about maintaining and running. I *will* maintain the weight loss, regardless of whether I am able to run. I want to be able to run, as well; when I'm not injured, it fits right into the maintenance plan.

Just Thinking

Sunday, December 15, 2013

Now to figure out what next. Time to set more goals.

Well, I do have a half marathon on Feb 23rd, the Disney Princess HM. I just bought a beautiful Sparkle skirt to wear. I'm going to be Cinderella's Fairy Godmother who got fit!! I have a little wand and I'll play Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo on my MP3 player with speakers. It's going to be fun! So I do need to keep trained for the 13.1 mile distance. I've been told the race is very crowded and it is not a good one to go for a PR, so training for time is not a high priority. I just want to enjoy it and finish.

Then, March 8th is the Senior Games 5K. I want to qualify for the National Senior Games. I'm not totally certain whether the local race will qualify or if I have to qualify in the state games. No one is in the office to ask until January. A time of 28:09 has made it the last years, so I need to find out if that is the time again in 2014. The state games are not until December of 2014, probably the first week. If I stay healthy and avoid injury I think I can qualify. It will take work -- speed work. I'm planning to work with a coach for about 2 months prior to the qualifying race to give me the best shot.

I'm planning to join Lakeland Runner's Club again in 2014. I only did one of their training runs a couple years ago and it was too fast for me. This year I'm going to check out their other options and see if they offer something I would benefit from. It is a less expensive option than the Galloway group and far less expensive than a coach. A lot of people in our Galloway group do not do any local races, but I'm thinking that is mostly what I want to do in 2014. I'm debating whether to join Galloway again in June 2014. I love the social aspect of the long runs, but know that I am disciplined enough to get my runs in whether I join or not. I'm thinking. I'm thinking.

As far as food and weight goals, I am planning to check out the new part of Weight Watchers. I understand that overall the program is not changing for 2014, but they are adding a Simple Start (or something like that) aimed at helping new people or people wanting to take their program up a notch. I won't know if I want to work the program until I see it. Maybe. Probably 3 months of tracking on Weight Watchers would be good for me. I find when I switch between SP and WW it keeps me on my toes and I don't get complacent. I've kind of found that 4-6 pounds I lost this year. I'm happy that maintaining around 129-133 is very doable for me, but I'd rather be maintaining 124-129. So after I see the new materials, I'll set some goals.

Speed work / hard training for peak performance and calorie restriction really don't go together very well. What are the priority of your goals? If qualifying for the Senior Games is number one, then I suggest you design a nutrition plan that supports that goal.

Start really thinking of yourself as an athlete because you are just that. Trust your body.

Jingle Bell 10K + One Mile Dog Jog Race Reports

Saturday, December 14, 2013

I will not leave you in suspense. I took first place in my age group for the 6.2 mile run!I wore bells and jingled all the way!! The temperature was in the mid-60s and the overcast sky turned to blue before the event was over. Great day for running! I got 7 hours sleep even though my nephew picked me up at 5:30am. I did better eating the day before and the morning of the race and had no GI problems this time. I consumed 4 Gu Chomps during the race and that seemed just right. Nonetheless, I was almost 2 minutes slower than my fastest 10K, so no PR. But this course had a lot of turns and some hills. I set my Garmin for run 4 minutes/walk 30 seconds, but I didn't stick to it. Several times I was listening to my MP3 player and didn't hear my Garmin and ran through the walk break. Then sometimes I walked when it wasn't time yet when it was uphill. Some day I hope to break an hour for a 10K, but I'll have to really do some speed work to take 3 minutes off my time. My husband tried to take a picture of me at the award ceremony, but the picture did not turn out. Oh, well. The best surprise of the 10K was that my nephew Martin took second place in his age group.

There is our family dog, Kahlua, resting before the race. Here she is with hubby outside the library that sponsored the race and benefits from it:

Above they are racing. Below they are near the finish:

And they posed right before finishing:

My daughter was feeling a little under the weather and didn't bring the granddaughters for the kid's runs. It would have been nice, but not necessary for a great race day.

There were about a dozen people from my Galloway group at the race, including Ellen who took first place in her new age group. See below. It is her 70th birthday today. I hope to be doing the same thing on my 70th!!

Notice that the man in the orange hat with his back to the camera is my husband. I ran my 21st race this morning; he walked his first. I am very proud of him!!

Grapefruit Season!

Friday, December 13, 2013

Grapefruits are ripe! My neighbor brought me 21 pink and white grapefruits. Some are the size of an orange and some are more typical grapefruit size. Some are sour; some are sweeter. None are as good as the ones that used to grow at my daughter's rental house. That's okay. I still love grapefruit.

Even though the Grapefruit Diet of years ago was mostly hype, there is something about grapefruit. They seem to reduce my sugar cravings. I forget about them when they aren't in season. I should remember and occasionally splurge on a foreign one out of our season. Yummmmm.

PS I'm planning to have fun at the Jingle Bell 10K tomorrow!!

I love grapefruits, and have even written about them in my blog
(http://www.sparkpeople.com
/mypage_public_journal_individu
al.asp?blog_id=5348453).

When we lived in N. Calif., we had a grapefruit tree. This sucker produced the most beautiful looking grapefruits, I've ever seen. Unfortunately the fruit was completely inedible. The grapefruit were not only sour, the fruit was so acidic, that no amount of dilution (of the juice) or sugar could render them "stomachable".

As my blog posts indicates, I don't even like sugar on grapefruit.

The lot, of that California house, did have other desirable trees, however. An apricot tree that produce huge, red, sweet tasty apricots. A bing cherry tree that produced the best bing cherries I've ever eaten. And, a giant redwood that dwarfed the house and the neighborhood. And, oh yes, a mulberry tree that produced tons of fruit. While nobody I ever met cares for mulberries, the mulberries would ferment on the trees; the birds would eat them, and then they would get drunk resulting either in their falling off the fence when they would alight there, or flying beak first into our patio plate glass sliding doors and thereby committing "hari kari"!. :-| | emoticon

Surprise!

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Yesterday when I went to my Galloway running FaceBook group I was really surprised to see this picture posted:

A person in my running group recognized me and posted it. She found it on an athletic wear FaceBook page. I don't know who submitted it. The picture came from my SparkPeople success story. Funny, but I was wearing Fila athletic clothes, not Lily Bomb so my picture should not have been submitted to that site. It has a contest for people to submit pictures of themselves wearing the brand.

I really don't mind. Now a lot more people I run with know that I've lost weight. One of my friends commented that she wanted to buy it as a poster. Am I going to be a poster??

People shouldn't be stealing your picture and posting it other places. I've heard of some pictures being used to sell weight loss products without the person's knowledge or consent. Other than that it is a really good picture of you.
