I'll Be Fine!

Saturday, November 02, 2013

Just one week from today I'll run my second half marathon. I'm hoping to make it in 2 hours and 30 minutes or at least beat my previous time of 2:37. It will be a beautiful run between and around several lakes, although that does mean some hills.

This morning I ran with the pace group leader for a 2:30 half. We started at 6am today and ran 5.6 miles. There was heavy cloud cover and high humidity, although the rain held off until after we finished. For next Saturday a low of 65 and high of 86 degrees is predicted with about 100% humidity. Since the clock turns back, the 7 am start will be equivalent to 8 am today. It was 73 degrees at that time today. Perhaps the forecast will change; we sure would like it a bit cooler. But no matter, I've run in hotter and as humid. I had planned to wear a new running outfit, but the consensus of the pace group is that we need to wear tank tops and carry water.

I'm planning to eat at the top of my calorie range this week, aiming for 65% carbohydrate all week and low fiber for the 2 days before the race. I won't worry if the scale goes up a bit as I'm trying to build glycogen storage for race performance.

I'm signed up for 3 half marathons this year. After this one for time, I've got 2 to run for fun. November 24th I'll be joining ONEKIDSMOM for our second St Pete Women's Half Marathon. I'll be wearing a ladybug costume. (See my Halloween Bonus Blog if you haven't seen it! EDIT: It's now my background picture!)

In February of 2014 I'm running the Disney Princess HM. Don't have a costume yet, but I'm signed up for the Cinderella section. I'm thinking about being her fairy godmother who got fit! Like maybe "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo" on the shirt, and a disposable blue robe with the red tie at the neck like in the Disney movie for standing around in the cold before the race. I think it starts at 5:35 am and that I'll have to get on the bus from my resort around 4 am. Man, the things I'll do to run!!

I feel ready for next Saturday, and although I'm aiming for time, as long as I finish in an upright position with a smile on my face wanting to do it again, (to quote some of my favorite people) I'll be fine!

Marsha, you're enough of an experienced runner to know not to break in your new outfit for the first time at your race! Hope you don't mind if I just mention that again as it is SO IMPORTANT to detect that little chafing bump before you're 5 miles into your half.

Hoping that you get the LOW temperatures, heck hoping you get the PERFECT temperatures for running but also trusting that you will complete your race at any temperature. You're trained, your tough and you're committed.

I'm so excited for you!

I ran 3 miles this eve as a ladybug. Think this costume will work for the St Pete Women's half marathon, Team Ladybug:

Happy Halloween

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Hubby went to costume party this morn. I helped him dress, threading the beard through the beads with a wire. Hope he has lots of fun. Maybe he'll even win!

I have Gwen, so we stayed home. Tried on my ladybug costume for November 24th. Think I'll try to run in it today and see if it works. Running in costume on Halloween would not be too weird. Maybe I can get him to take my picture later. We'll see.

Happy Halloween to all who celebrate!!

LOVE Halloween! Its my favorite seasonal event! Participated in and won my share of costume contests (love face painting) but I don't bother anymore as I have no space to store such things. I just enjoy wandering around the neighborhood looking for decorated yards and seeing all the kids dressed up that come to Mom's door (60 last year) and also I go to her mall and see the two hours of special treat handouts the merchants do -you have never seen so many kids in one place!! Safest way to do it!
I would and have dressed up if Halloween fell on a bridge day I was playing.
Are Gwen and Natalie dressing up? Hope to see photos later..
Enjoy!

A Routine Blog

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Well, it's been great, but it is time to come down off of the cloud 9 of success story and popular blog and get back to the routine. Routine. Such an interesting word. Today I've been thinking about the routine and routines and the things I do routinely.

When I was a kid, fat though I was, I took baton lessons and tap lessons. Routines were something I learned to do precisely step by step the same way every time. I remember one competition routine to the Star Spangled Banner that although I have not performed it for 55 years, I still remember some of the steps. Without such precise routines the recital of dance groups would just be chaos and the individual competitor might leave out a required element.

Routine has been my friend at times and routine has been my downfall. There have been times I've resisted having routines, thinking that it kills spontaneity and creativity. Recently I have come to acknowledge the importance of my Flylady routines. Although I don't do them step by step the same every day, there is value to scissor kicking the sheets before I get out of bed and finishing the making process in seconds, followed by bathroom and swishing and swiping, and getting dressed to the shoe laces immediately after. Following Flylady routines I can actually be more spontaneous and perhaps creative because I'm not wasting my thinking time on the mundane -- I've got those things automatically covered.

We talk a lot about eating habits and our active lifestyle, both good concepts. But when I think about my grocery planning and cooking routines, I'm thinking about my movements and the order in which I do things which lead to the meal results that become my eating habits. I recognize that some of my success is due to the way I clear the table and store the leftovers and plan to use those leftovers to make more healthy meals. Some of my previous problems were because I didn't stash and wisely use leftovers. Making that grocery list and thinking ahead are steps to success. Even today, I just don't eat as healthy when I try to wing it.

And when I packed my gym bag last evening, I thought about having clean sports bras and running socks always available. I remembered 4 or 5 years ago when I was establishing exercise routines and how if I would just put my shoes on I'd be much more likely to stick to my planned activity.

As I was writing this blog, I decided to look up the word routine just to make sure I'm not way off base. I found two definitions 1. "a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program" and 2."performed as part of a regular procedure rather than for a special reason." I was really thinking more of definition one, but definition two is also important. The regular procedures I develop for eating and exercise are truly more important to my success than the birthday meal or the occasional meal out.

So, today for me it is back to routine. I have good healthy eating and exercise routines. I'll continue to look for ways to improve them, but most of all, I will recognize and value that my routines are crucial for my success and happiness.

Good job Marsha! I tend to think of good routines as a partner of good habits. Once the routine becomes a habit, it is much easier to concentrate on other things like being spontaneous.

This is one emoticon blog, Marsha...as they all are! I wish they had an emoticon that says, "YOU ROCK" cause you DO!

You are way too modest: no blog of yours is ever routine.

It always interests me how much people overvalue "spontaneity" and even "creativity". We're a lot more eager to engage in spontaneous eating than spontaneous exercise! And I'd bet that a lot of really genuine creativity actually depends upon knowing the basics (which we learn through routine): the creative clarinetist also learned her scales, right?

You made me feel good about my routines, thanks! Somehow, I got it in my head that if I didn't do the Flylady routines step-by-step, then I wasn't really a Flybaby. Your blog made me realize that I really am organized in my own way. I've always made my bed, because I like it made up, and long before Flylady, I was in the habit of laying out the next day's clothes and prepping my gym bag (though I have to admit the brain fart that let me get to the rec center to swim before discovering I'd left my suit at home).
emoticon

I also approach the storing and use of leftovers they way you do, and today we waste very little food. Thanks again for helping me feel better about myself.

Can't Quit Smiling

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

It's been a heady experience to become an official SP Success Story and to get such great comments on the story and on my blog about it. Thanks to all of you who just made this such a fun time in my life! I am now averaging one Popular Blog Award per year. And while I know many of you have racked up far more than that, for me it feels just right.

And talk about averages and feeling just right, my weight is staying very near that sweet spot I've been aiming for. My run today felt really good and I'm feeling confident about my 2nd half marathon coming up in 11 days. Hubby and I are going for our 4th dance lesson this evening which will be a lot of fun. My Flylady weekly home blessing is done and the house feels comfortably organized and reasonably clean (just don't look at the garage or back porch). Both granddaughters are thriving and I'm still delighted to be able to care for them regularly. Honestly, life is good. In fact, I just can't quit smiling!!
