Bonus Blog: More Granddaughter's Gymnastics

Thursday, July 25, 2013

So proud of my active granddaughter, Natalie. After 4 weeks of camp with once a day gymnastics session, she asked to be put in 2 sessions per day. Based on her progress, the Y staff has welcomed her to do it. Here she is learning a back bend with walk over:

So glad she's enjoying her activity!

Energy Surge

Thursday, July 25, 2013

Today's run just felt so good. Don't know what was different. I haven't had any where I felt bad, just some where I was glad to get to the walking interval each time, but never unhappy to reach the run interval. But today I just listened to my body. It wanted to run. I didn't take any walk intervals for over 30 minutes. Once, well after I was warmed up, I cranked the treadmill down from 6.7 mph to 6.0 and didn't like it. I wanted to run faster! So I did. Feeling great! Wanting to capture this feeling; wish I could hold onto it forever and ever. Last evening when I did my low impact aerobic workout I felt really good, too. Hoping this energy surge lasts!!

I recently did a training run of 5K and just ignored my pace and ran with how I felt. The energy was definitely there and I was shocked to see a new training PR! It happens! BUT, no matter what, I still embraced and respected the recovery period. Over-training will be hazardous to your health! Fuel well, train well, perform well!

Isn't it funny how some days 6.7 seems just right, and other days it's a struggle to even maintain 5.5 or 6???? I did intervals today at 6mph, but I was ready for my walk breaks. Looking back, I didn't fuel my body well last night at all...lesson learned!

Fuel

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

I saw a fellow today as I took a walk break from volunteer work with my former agency. I hadn't seen him for about 3 years. After hello, he commented that I am keeping my weight off and looking good! That was my first "keeping the weight off" compliment. Savor it. Fuel to keep going, you know?

Runner and Gymnast

Saturday, July 20, 2013

This morning I got up and ran 6 miles (well, run-walk-run) with my half marathon training group while my niece and nephew ran the 3rd of the Watermelon 5K series. They both finished, which was the point. After my run I met them for breakfast. Delicious and fun!

Yesterday was fun, too. I took the smallest granddaughter to see her big sister give a gymnastics performance. Natalie did very well. This is her fourth week of gymnastics camp, where she gets about 1.5 hours of gymnastics instruction and practice per day. In her group she was the final and featured gymnast on the high bar. Although I was hoping for a runner, I think we've got a gymnast:

Look at her fly!

Progress and Dreams

Friday, July 19, 2013

Continuing to make progress. Weight at 128.8 this morn, just 2.8 over happy weight! On track with half marathon training program. Group run tomorrow morning. Challenge will be getting to sleep early enough tonight to get a good night's sleep. We'll see. (Hubby is definitely the owl - likes to go to bed much later, so it is hard for me to get to sleep early enough on a regular schedule. Trip out west, 2 hours earlier, didn't help either, but I'm trying.)

Gwen will be here soon and this afternoon we'll go see Natalie's gymnastic performance. I have both kids tomorrow afternoon and all day Sunday; take Natalie to camp and keep Gwen on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and both kids the following Sunday. Wednesday I work in the office. Tuesday I'm going to a Life Writing Workshop. I'm also really hoping to get a lot of housework done. Busy week anticipated!

I've had flirting thoughts about the National Senior Games. My best 5K time of 27:33 would qualify for nationals, assuming I finished in the top 4 in a qualifying race. The Florida state games are in Lee County, same county as Fort Myers, in December. But the 2014 national games are in Oregon and the 2015 games are in Minneapolis. One side of me just thinks it would be really cool to get to go and participate, even if I came in at the back of the pack. I probably will be more practical, but just fun to think about it. Sometimes I'm competitive and enjoy going head to head; other times I kind of get stressed out. Spending money on a family vacation that everyone enjoys is decidedly more practical. Dream on!

I think its time you thought of yourself for once. I can see you in these Senior Games, having the time of your life, enjoying competing with your fellow runners. After all the effort you are putting in to become the best runner you can be, I think it would be a shame for it to go to waste. We are taking a "second" trip this summer. My daughters and mom already had a girls trip to Colorado and now it's the family vacation. We aren't going crazy with the spending, but are just realizing that our family is growing up too fast. We are determined to spend time together before they all start moving out. (The oldest move into her dorm on August 6th.)

We can worry about paying it off later. Like I said we aren't going crazy, but it will make us "tighten the belt" later.

Have fun and keep at it!

"Spending money on a family vacation that everyone enjoys is definitely more practical." Practical maybe but this is YOUR dream--the family will have their own. I say this as a very involved grandma who turns down vacations with the kids in Disney so I can wander around Ireland. Scotland and England. I did the Disney thing when dd was young and now she and her dh can do it with their children. But now is the time for MY dreams. I say this will all understanding Marsha. At our age, though, do have another think about it?
