Fuel

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

I saw a fellow today as I took a walk break from volunteer work with my former agency. I hadn't seen him for about 3 years. After hello, he commented that I am keeping my weight off and looking good! That was my first "keeping the weight off" compliment. Savor it. Fuel to keep going, you know?

Words are powerful . . . just as those "fat girl" barbs lower one's self-esteem (been there since age 5) those positive comments are real esteem boosters. He probably had no idea what kind of "fuel" those words carried. I think I will my next blog on words!

Runner and Gymnast

Saturday, July 20, 2013

This morning I got up and ran 6 miles (well, run-walk-run) with my half marathon training group while my niece and nephew ran the 3rd of the Watermelon 5K series. They both finished, which was the point. After my run I met them for breakfast. Delicious and fun!

Yesterday was fun, too. I took the smallest granddaughter to see her big sister give a gymnastics performance. Natalie did very well. This is her fourth week of gymnastics camp, where she gets about 1.5 hours of gymnastics instruction and practice per day. In her group she was the final and featured gymnast on the high bar. Although I was hoping for a runner, I think we've got a gymnast:

Look at her fly!

I agree with OKM! I remember when I was Natalie's age (and actually, all the way through high school) and sports was for the boys, never the girls. So whatever keeps her active and loving to move, that's all that matters!

Congrats on your 6 miles, I'm starting over with the Couch to 5K.

Progress and Dreams

Friday, July 19, 2013

Continuing to make progress. Weight at 128.8 this morn, just 2.8 over happy weight! On track with half marathon training program. Group run tomorrow morning. Challenge will be getting to sleep early enough tonight to get a good night's sleep. We'll see. (Hubby is definitely the owl - likes to go to bed much later, so it is hard for me to get to sleep early enough on a regular schedule. Trip out west, 2 hours earlier, didn't help either, but I'm trying.)

Gwen will be here soon and this afternoon we'll go see Natalie's gymnastic performance. I have both kids tomorrow afternoon and all day Sunday; take Natalie to camp and keep Gwen on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and both kids the following Sunday. Wednesday I work in the office. Tuesday I'm going to a Life Writing Workshop. I'm also really hoping to get a lot of housework done. Busy week anticipated!

I've had flirting thoughts about the National Senior Games. My best 5K time of 27:33 would qualify for nationals, assuming I finished in the top 4 in a qualifying race. The Florida state games are in Lee County, same county as Fort Myers, in December. But the 2014 national games are in Oregon and the 2015 games are in Minneapolis. One side of me just thinks it would be really cool to get to go and participate, even if I came in at the back of the pack. I probably will be more practical, but just fun to think about it. Sometimes I'm competitive and enjoy going head to head; other times I kind of get stressed out. Spending money on a family vacation that everyone enjoys is decidedly more practical. Dream on!

Busy week indeed. That will be exciting to see Natalie's gymnastics performance. Of all the Olympic sports, I always enjoyed gymnastics the most. Combining power and grace, its just a thrill to watch! How wonderful she has taking an interest in it!
I think its time you thought of yourself for once. I can see you in these Senior Games, having the time of your life, enjoying competing with your fellow runners. After all the effort you are putting in to become the best runner you can be, I think it would be a shame for it to go to waste. I certainly don't think you would have to worry about coming in last, no sir, not you!
Go for it!!!

We are taking a "second" trip this summer. My daughters and mom already had a girls trip to Colorado and now it's the family vacation. We aren't going crazy with the spending, but are just realizing that our family is growing up too fast. We are determined to spend time together before they all start moving out. (The oldest move into her dorm on August 6th.)

We can worry about paying it off later. Like I said we aren't going crazy, but it will make us "tighten the belt" later.

Have fun and keep at it!

"Spending money on a family vacation that everyone enjoys is definitely more practical." Practical maybe but this is YOUR dream--the family will have their own. I say this as a very involved grandma who turns down vacations with the kids in Disney so I can wander around Ireland. Scotland and England. I did the Disney thing when dd was young and now she and her dh can do it with their children. But now is the time for MY dreams. I say this will all understanding Marsha. At our age, though, do have another think about it?

The Senior Dance

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Today my hubby and I enjoyed another senior dance. The city recreation department lets the group use the facility for free and the singer/musician/DJ works for tips. It's a lot of fun. They always have good coffee that I enjoy and cookies that I ignore. Today I took my camera:

Guess I enjoyed that twist so much I just had to close my eyes to take it all in!

Hubby and I slow dancing in front of the "band".

They are fixing the floor in our usual location, but this room has extra memories for hubby and me. We met there in 1979 at a dance.

Here's my good friend, Bertie, with her boyfriend, Vince. We met at the YMCA in Zumba class but became fast friends during the Senior Games. She won lots and lots of dance medals! It is great to have fit friends who inspire you to try new things. I can now do the Electric Slide and the Cuba Shuffle and am working on Boot Scootin' Boogie and the Good Times line dances.

I went to the Y this afternoon and enjoyed the great A/C for my 3.75 mile run-walk-run. Tonight I'm looking forward to eating supper with our small but dedicated local SparkTeam!!

Weigh to Go!

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

As I hinted in my SP status this morning I weighed 129.6, down 1.4 pounds from yesterday. So I'm now just .6 of a pound over what I weighed when we left on vacation 3 weeks ago and just 3.6 over the weight I would like to maintain.

As one great SparkFriend said, "Weigh to go." Confidence in my ability to maintain an 80 pound weight loss for the long term is really growing!
