The Senior Dance

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Today my hubby and I enjoyed another senior dance. The city recreation department lets the group use the facility for free and the singer/musician/DJ works for tips. It's a lot of fun. They always have good coffee that I enjoy and cookies that I ignore. Today I took my camera:

Guess I enjoyed that twist so much I just had to close my eyes to take it all in!

Hubby and I slow dancing in front of the "band".

They are fixing the floor in our usual location, but this room has extra memories for hubby and me. We met there in 1979 at a dance.

Here's my good friend, Bertie, with her boyfriend, Vince. We met at the YMCA in Zumba class but became fast friends during the Senior Games. She won lots and lots of dance medals! It is great to have fit friends who inspire you to try new things. I can now do the Electric Slide and the Cuba Shuffle and am working on Boot Scootin' Boogie and the Good Times line dances.

I went to the Y this afternoon and enjoyed the great A/C for my 3.75 mile run-walk-run. Tonight I'm looking forward to eating supper with our small but dedicated local SparkTeam!!

Weigh to Go!

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

As I hinted in my SP status this morning I weighed 129.6, down 1.4 pounds from yesterday. So I'm now just .6 of a pound over what I weighed when we left on vacation 3 weeks ago and just 3.6 over the weight I would like to maintain.

As one great SparkFriend said, "Weigh to go." Confidence in my ability to maintain an 80 pound weight loss for the long term is really growing!

You're a good example of a maintainer. The scale doesn't just sit on the number we want, we have to tweak our food and exercise frequently to maintain. Sharing your journey helps others, like me, in theirs.

No Cartwheels, But Not Worried

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

I've gone nearly 3 weeks without tracking, most of it time I visited family in Tennessee and South Dakota. I made many good food choices, but there were times my healthy options were limited, without making a fuss anyway. Most of the time I did the best I could, and often that was pretty good. But there were a few times that I chose to indulge, such as on my mom's 86th birthday, when I had a huge sirloin steak in a Wyoming steakhouse. I enjoyed every bite.

I would love to tell you that after 3 weeks of not tracking that my weight is down and I weigh exactly what I want to weigh. Can't tell you that. This morning I weighed 131 pounds even. So I went up approximately 2 pounds in the past 3 weeks and I'm right at 5 pounds over what I consider my ideal weight. I expect to lose at least a pound of it by just drinking plenty of water and watching my sodium. Then I'll need to cut back about a hundred calories a day for about a month to be back to where I was when I left. Then I'll see if I want to keep it up for a while longer to get down those other 3 pounds. Maybe. Maybe not.

So, I'm not doing cartwheels celebrating my current weight. I would just love to be able to eat without tracking and maintain, even on family visits. But in reality I am delighted to still be around a BMI of 21, feeling strong and healthy, and motivated to do even better eating in the upcoming weeks. I am also proud that I maintained my half marathon training, getting in every training run as scheduled and some real cross training, too.

While I was gone my Sparking was hit and miss. If I missed something profound on your blog, please comment and I'll check it out. Hoping that everyone is having a great summer!

Happy Fourth!

Thursday, July 04, 2013

I'm in Tennessee, visiting my step daughter and her husband, and step granddaughter and her husband, and my new great, great step grandson who is 10 weeks old. I will post some pictures later. He is so sweet.

Ran on the treadmill yesterday because it was pouring rain. This morning it was just a misty drizzle, so I walked outside. Not sure if where we are would be considered really hilly or a little mountainous, but believe me, it looks very unlike my central Florida home. Next week I'll be in South Dakota. That reminds me, on this patriotic holiday, of how wondrous and diverse our great nation is.

Happy Fourth of July, SparkFriends!!

More Galloway Changes

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Had a great group run this morning with my new Galloway group! The Program Director and PD Assistant have changed the groups again, so that my group ran intervals of 2.5 minutes/walk 1 minute, rather than 2:1 like last week.

Overall I had no trouble keeping up and felt good when our 6.3 mile run concluded. I did notice that on the flat ground I was usually at the front of the group, but when we came to the hills, I fell to the back. There was only one time I took an extra walk break. Truly I think I'm just a little skiddish about hills because overdoing hill work is probably what caused my mid-April injury. So I'm saying I think the speed issue may be more a head issue than a fitness issue. We ended up averaging 11:40 pace, but that included one water-potty stop, so I think that was a pretty good training run. It was 79 degrees and over 90% humidity.

I'll be out of town for the next 2 Saturday runs. I'm taking my clothes, shoes, and Garmin and plan to get those run ins myself. Hope all my SparkFriends are enjoying a healthy, active weekend!!

The key to running running hills in a continuous run (as opposed to hill sprints or repeats) is to keep your effort level consistent, i.e. don't push harder to maintain the pace. By keeping the effort level you will naturally slow down going up and speed up when you crest the hill. Since you aren't pushing, you won't overdo it.
