Mayfaire Paragraph

Saturday, May 11, 2013

The 34th Annual Mayfaire 5K was a success. I finished upright, smile on my face, wanting to do it again. My time was 29:02 (or there about) which earned me 3rd place in my age group. Tomorrow I will have pictures to post. Tonight it will be a shower and bed pretty soon!

Celebration Anticipated

Thursday, May 09, 2013

My training for the 34th Annual Mayfaire 5K, the largest race in our community, is as completed as it is going to get. The race is Saturday evening at 7pm and over 1600 people are expected to participate. I couldn't do the whole training plan due to an injury, but I did a lot of it. Whether I run it in 32 minutes or 30 or 28 or better, as long as I finish with a smile on my face (and in an upright position wanting to do it again - per ONEKIDSMOM) I will consider it a success.

The weather report is a bit intimidating. We've been having nice weather. For my Monday evening run at 6pm was it was 75 degrees. But race time temperature is now predicted to be 90 degrees. I will hydrate and will wear a tank top. I'll be fine. Although I haven't done much heat running this year in the past I've tolerated it pretty well.

My nephew is running it as well; I'm not sure about my niece yet. It may be the first time my nephew doesn't achieve a PR, because this race will be hot and hilly. You may remember in January he did his first 5K in 49 minutes, February in 47 minutes, March in 45 minutes, and April he made it in 43 minutes. So I hope he's not too disappointed if he is slower. We'll see.

Monday evening despite being able to feel my injury (sore muscles under glute), I ran one mile in 9:13 and a second in 9:19 very easily. Yesterday I did a treadmill 3.5 mile workout slower than that. So I'm as ready as I'm going to be for Saturday evening. After the race there will be food, bands, and fireworks. I expect to celebrate -- no matter what happens!

Wow! 90 degrees??? I simply can't imagine doing any kind of physical activity in that heat except in a swimming pool.. I hope people come well hydrated, that is a serious risk of heat stroke there -I would be very concerned for your nephew with his excess weight.. They need cooling stations, not just water stations (In our summers it used to get very hot and our exhibition, where the heat was magnified by the all cement grounds, they would set up these misting stations, where cool mist flowed down like a waterfall, very refreshing) Please do be very careful and pay attention to the early signs of heat exhaustion which can very quickly escalate to heat stroke..
I think I did not answer your swimming question how it helps my sinuses. The one thing I must wear in the pool are specially designed ear plugs that fit my ears perfectly. I have had ear problems since day one when I lost half of my hearing because they thought I was a colicky baby when in fact I was having ear infections which destroyed my ear bones and most of my ear drums. Now it is imperative I get no water in my repaired ear drums. So I never have the problem of water filled ears. The fact of the matter is I can only use indoor pools so its like being in a moist environment like a steam bath which tends to keep things soft and clear. You may want to consider them, it also cuts out some of the external noise and distractions..
I think you will do fine, but sure don't expect many people to get anything resembling a good time with those conditions, so don't stress it..

Unexpected Challenging Opportunity

Tuesday, May 07, 2013

I got a call from the nonprofit agency I used to direct. They've fired my successor and now they want me to help fix a mess and get things back on track. There are people I would really like to help, but I'm not sure I remember enough to be much help. My time is limited with child care duties, but we may be able to work out some other arrangements. Oh, my, I had not seen this coming. With one car between hubby and I and this agency being quite a commute, that will be a challenge. Wonder if I could find a carpool? I've gotten rid of most of my professional clothes and shoes. My hair is a wild mess. I know that looking the part helps. Don't think I could be effective wearing what I wear around the house.

One thing I cannot do is allow myself to get too stressed out, which would be very easy to do. I will have to do what I can do and let the rest go. Easier said than done. I lost much of my weight while I was working for this agency, although earlier I'd gained quite a bit working there, too. If I go back to work, even temporarily, it does not mean I have to gain weight, but I'll have to work hard to make sure it doesn't happen. It will be trickier to get my workouts and running completed, but not impossible. I will be sitting a lot more than I do now. I am sure the agency is struggling financially and there won't be much financial incentive to undertake this challenge. But I'm going to at least go and talk to them about it and see if there is a role for me in this renewal effort.

Whatever you do, take care!

I agree that they have a problem.

They fired the successor and are probably

having to do more then they thought.

However, When people retire that means they are done.

I think the max you should commit to is be an adviser

when they need advice and possibly help train a

qualified person. I agree with your other friend in that

you should not allow them to guilt you into helping.

I used to work for a non profit and my boss played that

card so much I eventually became bitter. emoticon

It's nice to know they appreciate your knowledge and expertise. I can imagine that it would be hard to leave the lifestyle you have now. Is it possible to train someone who could replace you? Don't take anything that would compromise your health, happiness or raise your stress level. Don't feel under any obligation. Yet, it also sounds like you may like this opportunity. So, go and talk and see if it's something you would want to do but don't forget that it's perfectly OK to say NO.

LIVE2RUN4LIFE 5/7/2013 5:41PM

Think hard about why you would choose to do this. Sounds pretty stressful to me (big mess, long commute -- could you really control how much time you spent?) Be sure, if you do it, that it is because that is what is right for you, not just an automatic response to the compliment and feeling needed (women are really susceptible to that). Resist putting yourself last.

Wow! You are seriously thinking about going back to work even with full time child care? I know lots of working Moms cope with this, but most of them are not at retirement age either. It would be quite a lot on your plate and I really don't see how it is doable to keep up with your running either -the long commute might just be the deal breaker there. That is simply something you can't afford. You have earned your retirement! Your running is your 'me time' To have anything interfere with that would simply be criminal. Do take care of yourself, you are worth it. Is working out of your home on your own time schedule feasible with this job? That an alternative..

Finished Project

Monday, May 06, 2013

I read a signature block, and I don't even remember whose it was, but it said that any day you can run is a great day! I'd been feeling just a bit sorry for myself over the sore rear end muscles, but that saying helped put it in perspective. Today is a great day! Looking forward to the run with my coaching group this eve. (And to those of you who suffer with real health issues every day, I apologize for being so insensitive.)

I'm also delighted to report that hubby and I finally got the aquarium set up again, after a long time of just having an empty or covered one in the living room. I definitely think an empty aquarium does nothing for the ambiance or fung shwae (I know that isn't spelled right) of the room.

Photographing the aquarium is a bit tricky with the mirror catching the flash behind it, but this will give you an idea of our latest completed project:

So here's to renewed enthusiasm and to great days!!
