Refusing to Feel Old Today

Thursday, April 18, 2013

When my daughter told me she found 5 grey hairs, it was like I went into denial. I've been grey for quite some time and quit coloring 8 years ago. I've accepted that I'm a grey-headed older woman. I love being a grandmother; I don't mind looking like one. But my little girl? How could she have grey hairs?? This just cannot be. Oh, I know. I was 32 years old when I had my one and only child so I could easily have a child 10 years older. I definitely am old enough to have a grey-headed kid. So why do I feel like I'm in shock?

And then there was the great event yesterday. It is with great joy that I tell you my husband became a great grandfather yesterday. His married 19 year old granddaughter gave birth to a beautiful little boy, Rylan. Why don't I feel as much joy telling you that I am now a step great grandmother? Cannot be. But let me let you ooo and awe and coo:

He is just darling. We'll be going to Tennessee to meet him the first of July.

One of my SparkFriends wrote recently (you know who you are ONEKIDSMOM) that I'm not getting older, I'm getting faster. Truth of the matter is that I am getting older, but I am getting faster, too. Today's challenging workout was half mile repeats at 7.1 mph/8.5 minutes per mile. Coach told me to do 4 to 6 of them depending how I felt. I did all 6!! I look at some of my running buddies who are my age. Running doesn't stop aging, but it does add life to the years!!

So this old lady, with a greying daughter, and a new great grandchild, is delighted to be living life fully and fit! We can't outrun the years, but we can just keep running with a smile ear to ear!!

Wow! What a sweetie! Congratulations on the great grandkid!!
You look fabulous to me! I am so glad you don't color your hair. You have earned every one of those grey hairs and wear them proudly! I had my first grey hair at age 24. Its not so noticible on me because of the multitude of colors that makes up my red from very light strawberry blonde to the darker ones, but it is considerably lighter then it used to be -think carrot top :P I won't mind going all white because it will finally allow me to wear all colors instead of avoiding the clashing ones.
Keep on being the fantastic fit running Queen that you are! Bet very few grandkids can say they have a granny that can run a marathon!!

Who is this running coach? It's amazing what you are able to do. I'd love to hear more about your training program!

I'm quite bummed about this Achilles Heel pain I've been having. I was really running fast for awhile, then this happened and now I'm lucky to run a 9.5 minute mile. Most day it's more like a 10.5-11 minute mile. But I keep moving.

About the grey hair: When she was in high school, my older sister knew a boy who went totally grey at the age of 19.....a family trait. So YOU don't have to be to have a child with some grey hairs. emoticon

I can just walk and at 56 feel 106 when I try to move, but am getting better, doing all my physio exercises and will not let this arthritis get me down nor will it stop me!! I will get my new knee and be able to stand up better and move easier. I won't be running but will continue to walk.

I've been colouring my hair since it grew back after I had it shaved off for a brain op in 2007, I've experimented with colour/highlights and lowlights and styles ever since, and as I'm going white (not grey LOL) it keeps looking ancient at bay. Well a girl's gotta look her best LOL

You are amazing Marsha and I love the new bundle of joy, you're going to need some stamina to keep up with him! emoticon

Freedom

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Good bike ride this morning. I don't know my exact mileage as I turned around to join some friends for part of the ride. It was at least 16 miles; probably 19. We've been having 90 degree weather, but this morning it was just right for a ride. I was hardly even sweaty when I got home.

Yesterday I weighed 126.2 and this morning it was 125.4, giving me a .6 cushion below my "happy weight" of 126. It feels really great to be truly trying to maintain now! About 51 of my 63 years I've been wanting to lose weight. Even though I plan to eat no differently unless my weight drops below 124, I have a good feeling of freedom to be the me that I am!! Does that make sense??

Absolutely. Being at the weight you really desire means you have finally figured out how to get it there and keep it focused on staying there. You already know how to maintain successfully. Losing the last little bit of tiny weight you want to is always a struggle, but once you are finally there, you know what to do to keep it there. Do remember it will always fluctuate, its not going to be a straight line graph. As long as it hovers around your happy weight with no noticeable ups or downs, you have done it!
Enjoy!

Group 5K Picture and Plans

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Here is one last picture of the Galloway group runners who participated in the Autism Awareness 5K on Saturday:

I'd really like to find where they published the results. I'm thinking I was first out of this group. I know I beat Fritz who won first place for men over 70 and I beat Brendan who placed second in men 40-49. I'm not 100% certain about the third man's time and I can't remember his name. I was a minute ahead of Yvonne who outran me at the Women's Half Marathon (2:15 vs. my 2:37). But to be fair I know that Jan, Janet, MJ, Shirley, and several others had run 6 miles before this 5K because they are training for a marathon and running a fast 5K is just not one of their goals. Terry, the Executive Director of the Central Florida Autism Institute who sponsored and benefitted from this 5K, is one of our group members and a really nice person. That is why so many showed up to support her and her cause. So perhaps it doesn't matter if I was first in this group or no. Is there much glory in beating people who weren't really competing? I do think after this spring focused on 5K speed, I may want to work on speeding up my 10K and half marathon times.

Okay, enough with the 5K already. Today I'm going to meet my new doctor. The doctor I'd had for almost 10 years quit accepting my insurance, so I'm having to change. I had to wait 5 months to get a new patient appointment with this doctor, but I've heard such good things about him. Hope it goes well.

After the doctor appointment, I'll go to the Y and workout. Hope the timing is such that I can pick up Gwen after her gymnastics class so that my son in law can go eat lunch with my daughter. It'll be a good day for all of us. Hope it is for you, too!

You would think your Dr. would love to have a ptient who takes good care of herself like you do, can't understand why he would no longer take your insurance!! Hope your new one is way better!! So hapoy I don't have to deal with that here. The only reason a Dr. rejects patients here is they are at capacity already. I am lucky to have the one I do, she is looking for more help in her busy office.

Now that I am in a running clinic (and am up to running 7 minutes) I am beginning to wonder if I'll EVER really be a runner. Not sure I enjoy it and it still is HARD. Have you been running forever, or was this something you took up in the past few years? Any advice??

A person I've ridden the bike trail with a couple times recognized me in these pictures on FaceBook and sent them to me. I am so grateful. Don't think I'd have ever found them. 5K Victory

Saturday, April 13, 2013

A new 5K PR! WooHoo! I took 55 seconds off my old PR and finished in 27:33. That time also got me a first place medal. The photography is not too great, but won't let that detract from the great event!

Here's me with my medal:

Here's my nephew's grey sleeve and his finishing time. This was his 4th 5K. He's improved every time: from 47 to 45 to 43 to today's 41 minutes!! If I hadn't had to park so far away I'd have gotten my camera and back in time to get his face, too. Oh, well.

My niece is the fourth person from the left in a white tee-shirt. She paced her brother, but then finished with a flury a little in front of him. I was across the street with the telephoto trying to get there in time:

Here's another picture of one of my friends getting her medal:
